Ethan said he loved me, yet he planned to get me pregnant, push me out of our company, and use our child and marriage to trap me at home.

He needed an obedient wife, a partner who would protect his company, and a woman who would never leave.

But the woman he truly wanted was the lover who had left him seven years ago.

So on his birthday, I brought both families to his door and delivered the “love of his life” right to him.

He expected me to break down and beg him to come back.

He had no idea I was walking away from far more than our marriage.

I saw Ethan's car outside a downtown restaurant while I was having dinner with my best friend.

He had told me he would be working late.

For the past week, he had barely slept. He picked at his food, stared at his phone, and wandered through our house as if every room reminded him of something he'd lost. I had assumed the pressure at Cole-Hayes Technologies was getting to him.

The company was in the middle of a difficult funding round. Ethan had carried most of the day-to-day work while I was on medical leave. If he was meeting an investor, I thought I might surprise him with coffee and a ride home.

The hostess knew him. When I asked whether Mr. Cole's party was still there, she pointed me toward a private room at the end of the hall.

I was reaching for the handle when a man inside laughed.

"Still having trouble settling back into married life?"

Another voice said, "Come on, Ethan. Whatever happened out there was temporary. Claire is the one who built a life with you."

A lighter clicked.

Then Ethan spoke.

"You didn't see Vanessa at the airport. She walked through security and never looked back. It felt like someone cut something out of me."

The hallway seemed to tilt.

Someone cleared his throat. "If you love her that much, why did you let her leave?"

"Her parents are pushing her to settle down. I can't give her what she wants right now."

"Then let her go. And get your head straight before Claire notices. You could lose both of them."

Ethan gave a low, humorless laugh.

"Claire and I have never really been in sync. Not emotionally. Not physically. Sometimes I think if I'd been brave enough to walk away from her years ago, I might actually be happy now."

Nobody answered.

My fingers were still wrapped around the door handle. I could feel every ridge in the brass beneath my palm.

At last, one of his friends said, "Vanessa's youth matters, but Claire's doesn't? If you don't love your wife, divorce her."

"It's not that simple." Ethan's chair scraped the floor. "A divorce now would tear apart the company. Claire still owns a third of it. Her parents would turn it into a war."

"So what's your plan?"

"We have a baby first. Once she's pregnant, she'll stay home. When the baby comes, that'll be her whole world. She won't have the time or energy to watch everything I do at the company."

My breath stopped.

Ethan continued in the same calm voice he used during board meetings.

"Then, when things are stable, I'll find a way to bring Vanessa back."

"What if she's married by then? What if she has a kid?"

"I'll take care of both of them."

I released the handle before the metal could click.

Ten years of marriage. Ten years of midnight work sessions, stale takeout, unpaid invoices, and promises whispered in rented rooms. Apparently all of it weighed less than one woman walking through airport security.

I backed away from the door. My shoulder hit the wall hard enough to hurt, but the pain helped me stay upright.

I texted my friend that I felt sick and left through the side entrance.

Outside, cold wind pushed under my collar. I walked without knowing where I was going. By the time I called a rideshare, my feet were numb and my face was wet.

I went to my parents' house.

My mother opened the door in her robe and took one look at me.

"Claire? What happened?"

"I had a fight with Ethan," I said. "Can I sleep here?"

She didn't ask another question. She pulled me inside and held me until I could breathe again.

Ethan came home after two in the morning.

I knew because the security app sent an alert when he unlocked the front door. A few minutes later, he called me. I let it ring.

Then came a message.

Where are you?

Another.

Claire, this isn't funny.

I pictured him entering our bedroom, loosening his tie, and reaching for the woman he believed would always be there. Before leaving, I had arranged two pillows under my side of the comforter and draped my nightshirt across them.

It was childish.

It was also the first thing I had done in years without considering whether it would upset him.

My phone rang again.

This time I turned it facedown.
