leon · Completed · 10.5k Words
Introduction
We were in a terrible car crash.
In my final moments, he used his last strength to hold my hand.
"Thank you. I'm so lucky to have you."
I squeezed back through my tears as he took his final breath, and moments later, I followed.
When I opened my eyes again, I was back in senior year, coding day and night.
All so we could conquer Silicon Valley together, making up for our past life's regrets.
At the graduation party, he walked toward me with roses just like before.
"I want to tell you, I love you—"
My heart soared as I stood up.
"I love you too—"
He walked past me and handed the roses to the trust fund heiress.
In the stunned silence that followed, I finally understood—he wanted to rewrite his story.
When applying for grad school, I chose MIT, three thousand miles away from him.
I'd give him what he wanted, and finally pursue the dream I'd only found at forty-five.
Chapter 1
The bass from the speakers rattled the floorboards of the Sigma house. Everyone formed a tight circle in the center of the living room, their eyes darting between me and the front door.
I dug my fingernails into my palms until they turned white. I forced my posture to relax and kept my voice breezy.
"Perfect timing, Liam. I was two seconds away from spoiling the whole surprise."
The tension in the room snapped. The crowd erupted into cheers and whistles.
"Kiss her!" someone shouted from the back.
Liam stood in the center of the room. He completely ignored me. He lowered his head and locked his eyes on Chloe, his expression intensely tender.
"Make me the luckiest guy here. Be my girlfriend, Chloe. Please."
Chloe’s eyes widened. She threw her arms around his neck and nodded frantically.
I turned my head away. I pushed through the sweaty crowd and backed into a dim corner near the kegs. I took a long, hard swallow of my spiked seltzer. The cheap alcohol burned my throat, but I focused on the burn to keep my breathing steady. My chest felt tight, hot with a sharp, stinging humiliation.
My roommate, Jenna, slid through the crowd and stopped next to me. She looked completely baffled.
"What the hell was that?" Jenna leaned in over the music. "You and Liam practically live at the library together. You guys code until 3 AM every night. Half the campus thought you two were a done deal."
I stretched my mouth into a casual smile. I played the part perfectly.
"We share a GitHub repository, Jenna. We're neighbors. He’s basically my annoying older brother."
I swallowed hard against the bitter taste in my mouth. Yesterday, this "brother" kissed my forehead in the computer lab. He hooked his pinky around mine and swore we were moving to Silicon Valley together. He promised to build our startup, take it public, and put a ring on my finger right on the Golden Gate Bridge.
A heavy, suffocating weight settled over the room. I felt a gaze lock onto me.
I looked up. Across the sea of red plastic cups, Liam stared straight at me.
My breath hitched. That wasn't the hungry, ambitious twenty-two-year-old Liam I coded with yesterday. The eyes watching me were cold, calculating, and ruthless. That was the forty-eight-year-old Liam. The tech billionaire. The man who orchestrated corporate bloodbaths without blinking. He remembered everything. He reincarnated too.
Instinct kicked in. Muscle memory from my past life took over. As the wife of a Silicon Valley CEO, the golden rule beat into my brain was simple: maintain absolute perfection. No matter the scandal, no matter the public humiliation, project total grace. Never let the media see you bleed. Never tank the company’s stock price.
My grip on the plastic cup tightened until the plastic cracked. The cold seltzer spilled over my knuckles.
Reality slammed into me.
Screw the stock price. I was a twenty-two-year-old broke college student standing in a sticky frat house. I had forty bucks in my checking account. I owed this man zero PR protection.
Jenna opened her mouth to ask another question, but Liam was already moving. He cut through the crowd with Chloe plastered to his side. His arm wrapped tightly around her waist.
He stopped right in front of me. He flashed a brilliant, camera-ready smile, but his eyes hit me like shards of ice.
"Maya," Liam said, his voice loud enough for the people nearby to hear. "Say hi to your new sister-in-law."
I didn't flinch. I held his gaze.
"Chloe wants to hit the Hamptons for the summer," Liam continued, dropping the bomb with casual cruelty. "I’m going with her. You’re on your own for the Y Combinator bootcamp. Figure the code out yourself."
I stared at the sparkling Tiffany diamond hairpin tucked into Chloe’s blonde blow-out. I kept my mouth shut. The sheer audacity of his betrayal spiked my adrenaline.
Chloe patted Liam’s chest. She looked at me, her eyes gleaming with pure, unfiltered condescension.
"Liam, don't be so hard on her. How is Maya supposed to finish that huge project all by herself?" Chloe smirked. "Tell you what, Maya. I can introduce you to some of my trust fund buddies from the country club. They absolutely love a hardworking scholarship girl. Maybe one of them will fund you."
She was basking in her victory.
A year ago, Chloe cornered Liam at a networking mixer. She begged him for a date. Liam humiliated her in front of fifty people, stating he had a startup to build and zero time for spoiled girls. She noticed we were inseparable. She came to this party tonight specifically to ruin what everyone thought would be Liam’s grand confession to me.
Instead, she became the star of the show.
She had no idea how the original timeline played out. Tonight, in my past life, Chloe got black-out drunk at this exact party. She grabbed Liam’s first VR headset prototype—the one we spent six months building—and smashed it against the brick fireplace out of pure jealousy. Liam lunged at her. He almost struck her across the face. I threw my body between them and took the brunt of his rage.
For the next eight years, Chloe stalked him. She threw money, connections, and herself at him. Liam iced her out completely. He treated her like a disease.
I remember curling up against his chest in our first apartment. I traced the line of his jaw and asked him the question directly.
"Chloe is gorgeous, Liam. Her dad owns half the venture capital firms in the state. Are you really telling me you never felt a single spark?"
Liam scoffed. His tone dripped with disgust.
"I don't play games with toxic little brats like her. She's a nightmare."
Right up until the London conference.
Liam flew out for a massive European tech summit. Chloe bought a ticket on the next flight and tracked him to his hotel. Her town car got T-boned in a rainy intersection on the way from Heathrow. Dead on arrival.
I was sitting in our penthouse when the news broke on the television. My stomach dropped. I whipped my head to look at Liam.
All the color drained from his face. He looked like a corpse. He didn't say a single word for two days.
That night, the screaming woke me up. Liam thrashed in the silk sheets, his hands clawing at his chest. He choked on his own tears, gasping for air in the dark.
"If I just said yes to you... you wouldn't have gotten on that flight. You wouldn't have followed me. I killed you. God, I'm so sorry..."
I pulled his head to my chest. I rubbed his back until the sun came up. He never mentioned the nightmare again. I wrote it off as survivor's guilt. The heavy conscience of a decent man feeling responsible for a tragedy.
Until this exact second.
I snapped back to the present. The strobe lights flashed across Liam’s face. He looked down at Chloe.
I saw it. The raw, desperate protection in the set of his shoulders. The agonizing tenderness in his eyes. The way his thumb gently stroked the curve of her waist. He never looked at me like that in twenty-six years of marriage.
The realization hit me like a physical punch to the gut.
That night in the penthouse wasn't guilt. It was grief. It was a broken heart.
He loved the toxic heiress all along. He used my brain, my code, and my absolute devotion to build his empire, all while secretly grieving the spoiled girl who smashed our first prototype.
The anger burned away the last shreds of my shock. My blood ran cold and fast.
I dropped my cracked plastic cup. It hit the floorboards, splashing sticky alcohol over Liam's expensive sneakers.
I looked at the man I spent a lifetime building into a king. He wanted to rewrite history. He wanted to trade the loyal genius for the billionaire’s daughter.
Fine.
I smiled. A real, sharp, dangerous smile.
