Sharp canine teeth sank deep into my coat.

"Help! Arthur... save me!"

I clutched my belly tightly. The Rottweiler was viciously tearing at my leg.

Arthur had just gone to park the car. He said he'd be back in three minutes to take me for my check-up. But twenty minutes had passed, and he still hadn't shown up.

"No... my baby..."

A sudden pain shot through my abdomen, and blood began to trickle down my leg. Just as I was losing consciousness, a blinding flashlight beam pierced the darkness from the alley.

Arthur, just back from his patrol, scooped me up and spun me around. "We're having a baby? Chloe, we're finally having a baby!"

"Yes, Arthur, we're going to be parents!"

This time, I would protect this child at all costs!

Arthur gently set me back on the floor, sighing.

"This is so unfortunate. The department is currently cracking down on gang activity in the South Side, and the chief has ordered all first-level officers to work night shifts back-to-back. I can't be here for you when you need me the most... Should I request paid leave? I don't mind if it affects my performance review for the next six months."

I smiled and kissed his cheek.

"I can take care of myself. Don't give up this promotion for me."

"But I'm worried," Arthur said, his brow furrowed.

"Don't stress, Arthur. We've got this."

Familiar voices came from outside the bathroom. At some point, my adoptive parents—Arthur's parents, the Millers—had arrived.

"Please take care of her, Mom." Arthur sighed in relief and planted a kiss on my forehead.

Before bed, he placed a scented candle on the nightstand.

"I picked this up at an essential oil shop on my way home. It's safe for pregnant women and will help calm your nerves so you can sleep well. Goodnight, my sweetheart."

As I drifted in and out of sleep, a massive shadow loomed over me.

"Buster?" I instinctively grabbed the pillow beneath me to shield my face.

The next second, Buster lunged straight for my face!
