Return of the Dead Heir, I Became the Mafia Godfather
Mark · Ongoing · 70.6k Words
Introduction
Five years later, he returns—cold-blooded, powerful, and unshakable. The entire underground world of New York is reshaped beneath him.
Just as Mike is about to settle everything once and for all, Lucas forces him into a political marriage with Chicago’s top family, using the secret of his true identity as leverage.
And when Mike first meets the woman at the top of that power hierarchy, she completely changes the rules of this marriage contract—this time, hunter and prey are no longer clearly defined.
Chapter 1
Mike Costa looked at the man in front of him, his eyes cold.
Marco was tied to a chair, his face covered in blood, his left eye swollen nearly shut.
His right index finger was bent backward at a sickening angle.
"Tough guy, huh. Still not talking? Guess you won't be needing this finger then."
Mike pressed the iron pliers against Marco's jaw.
"Please… I can't talk."
In just half a day, Marco had been worked over so badly that he could barely breathe.
Mike's voice was flat.
"Last chance. Tell me — who put you up to selling out the family?"
Blood trickled from the corner of Marco's mouth.
"They'll kill my whole family…"
Mike didn't react. He just slowly crouched down and lined the pliers up with Marco's pinky finger.
"Wait—"
Marco screamed, his voice cracking.
Mike ignored him and kept going.
A sharp, clean crack of breaking bone.
Then Marco's screams filled the empty warehouse.
"Eight left."
Mike set down the pliers and looked at Marco's face, twisted in agony.
"I'm not in a hurry. After the fingers, there are toes, teeth… take your time."
Marco was gasping, cold sweat pouring down his forehead from the pain.
"I'll talk, I'll talk — just promise me my family gets out safe…"
Mike stood up.
"Tell me the truth, and I'll get them out."
Marco stared into Mike's eyes, trying to figure out if he was lying.
"You'll really get them out? If I talk?"
"Sicily's a nice place," Mike said. "My people will watch them board the ship themselves."
Marco went quiet for a few seconds. Then he lowered his head.
"It was your brother Lucas… He had me sell the port smuggling intel to the Cartello family…"
Mike gave a small nod. It matched everything he'd already dug up. Lucas had sold out the family, just like he thought.
Five years ago, his father was ready to retire and had named him as the successor.
But his older brother Lucas refused to accept it. He staged an explosion on the yacht Mike was on, and everyone assumed Mike was dead.
Three months later, his father died of a sudden heart attack, and Lucas stepped in as the new head of the Costa family without anyone questioning it.
What no one knew was that Mike had survived the blast. He hit the water badly wounded but was pulled out by a passing cargo ship — one that belonged to the Shadow Syndicate.
Mike didn't die. He clawed his way back through sheer will and sharp thinking.
Five years of the Shadow Syndicate's brutal training turned him into something else entirely — combat, firearms, intelligence analysis, financial crime, political manipulation, psychological warfare.
But it came at a cost. The Syndicate only cared about leverage.
He'd used their resources, and in return, he'd handed over his autonomy — his body, his mind, and a piece of whatever came next.
He'd brought Marco in for more than just confirming what he already knew — that Lucas had worked with enemies to kill his father and take the seat.
It was also because Lucas had built the family into one of New York's five major crime families.
And the Syndicate wasn't going to pass up a chance to absorb the Costas and lock down New York.
So they sent Mike in. Which also gave him exactly what he needed — a reason to come home, clean house, root out the traitors, and take back everything that was his.
"Thank you, Marco," he said quietly.
Mike placed both hands on Marco's head and snapped it to the side.
The crack of a breaking neck. Marco's body went limp.
Mike stood up, pulled a handkerchief from his suit pocket, and wiped the blood from his hands.
"Clean this up."
He said it to the two men behind him without turning around.
"Give his family some money and get them out. And make sure everyone hears this — betray us and you die. Stay loyal, and you'll be paid back ten times over."
"Yes, sir."
His men answered without hesitation.
They could tell Mike had something serious backing him, but nobody asked questions.
In this world, the less you knew, the longer you lived.
All they needed to know was that Mike was back, and the Costa family was about to change hands. That was enough.
Mike walked out of the warehouse.
A light rain was falling over the New York skyline.
He got in the car. His phone lit up with a message.
[Your family's throwing a party at The Diamond Club — celebrating the deal with the Cartello family. Lucas is probably there. But Mike, if you agree to be my boyfriend, I'll tell you they're actually carving up the smuggling routes through New York Harbor. Think about it?]
The message was from Sarah West — one of the best hackers in the world, and someone who had made her interest in Mike very clear.
Mike leaned back in his seat, his mind already running.
Lucas teaming up with the Cartellos was exactly the kind of short-sighted move he expected. The smuggling routes through New York Harbor were just the surface. The real value was in the global logistics network built around the port — the money laundering channels, the political reach.
The Shadow Syndicate had been building toward that for years. Mike's whole purpose here was to bring the Costas into that system and make New York a key base for the Syndicate's North American operations.
"Drive. The Diamond Club."
He glanced out at the rain.
"Since they're celebrating," he said, "might as well bring Lucas a gift."
The Diamond Club. Manhattan's most exclusive private venue. Membership alone ran eight hundred thousand dollars a year.
Ivan stood on the second-floor balcony, whiskey in hand, looking down at the crowd on the dance floor below.
He was the Costa family's second-in-command — Lucas's most trusted man — sent to finalize the deal with the Cartello family.
Anthony, the Cartellos' number two, stood beside him.
"What's taking Lucas so long?" Anthony swirled his glass.
"Something came up last minute," Ivan said with a smile. "He'll be here soon. But he's given me full authority to represent the Costas tonight."
They clinked glasses. The mood was easy.
Then the door to the private room swung open.
Mike walked in, calm and unhurried.
Ivan's hand tightened on his glass. His eyes narrowed.
"Who are you? This is a private room—"
"Five years, Ivan. You don't recognize me?"
Mike smiled and walked straight toward him.
Ivan's pupils shrank. His glass slipped from his hand and shattered on the floor.
"Mike? You're alive…"
The room went silent.
Everyone was staring at Mike.
Ivan took a step back and forced himself to stay steady. So what if Mike was alive? He came alone. What could he possibly do?
There were twenty bodyguards in this room and fifty more family members downstairs.
Ivan pulled himself together and put on a smile.
"Mike, where have you been? Why didn't you reach out?"
"Lucas is going to be so glad you're back."
Mike's expression didn't change. He let a beat pass, then spoke evenly.
"After I was pulled out of the water, I spent the time learning."
Ivan kept the smile going.
"Still the same Mike, always studying…"
"What I learned was how to build a new order. And getting the family back on track starts with cutting out the traitors."
Mike cut him off without raising his voice.
Ivan's smile froze.
"What betrayal? Who betrayed you?"
Mike laid it out clearly — everything Marco had said before he died.
"Marco Bellini confessed right before he died. Lucas ordered him to sell family intel to the Cartello family. You knew about it, too."
A vein bulged at Ivan's temple.
"Marco was the traitor! He was trying to drive a wedge between you and the boss, trying to blow up our deal with the Cartellos!"
He spun toward Anthony. "You're not buying any of this, are you?"
Anthony let out a cold laugh and got to his feet.
"A man who vanishes for five years walks back in and starts throwing accusations at my partner — right in the middle of my victory party."
He looked at Mike with open contempt.
"Lucas is the Cartello family's partner. That's not changing."
Ivan grabbed onto that like a lifeline and pushed harder.
"You hear that, Mike? You come back out of nowhere and try to blow up a deal between two families, and you drag Marco out as your excuse. Who do you think is going to believe you?"
Anthony nodded.
"No one gets to sabotage a family alliance. Ivan — this man's already died once. Better he stays dead."
On Ivan and Anthony's word, dozens of bodyguards flooded in from the hallway, sealing every exit and closing in around Mike from all sides.

The CEO's Unspoken Love
Before I could answer, he moved closer, suddenly looming over me, his face inches from mine. I felt my breath caught, my lips parting in surprise.

George remained unconcerned, convinced I would never leave him.
His deceptions continued until the day the divorce was finalized. I threw the papers in his face: "George Capulet, from this moment on, get out of my life!"
Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."
