Chapter 5 CHAPTER 005

Soren never thinks for once in his life that he will be allowed to step into such a luxuriously built building, but he is, standing in the city’s wealthiest office, feeling like an outsider.

From up here, he feels like he can see the whole of Ravenscourt city and beyond but he is not in the place to explore as he stands before Reign Montgomery, who sits behind his large, luxurious table, dressed in a black suit with a coat draped over his broad shoulders, hands covered with black gloves, while his cold eyes stay fixed on Soren’s face as if he can see through to his soul and know his secrets but Soren knows the man won’t let him be here if he knows Soren’s secret.

Soren has seen and fought so many alphas, yet none of them unnerves him like Reign Montgomery does. The way his eyes simply stare at him without blinking makes Soren’s skin prickle.

It’s not even what he says because Reign hasn’t said a single word yet since they met at the door; it’s the silence and the quiet weight of it, it’s like the man doesn’t need to speak to remind him who holds the power here, if the way his pheromones spread in every corner of the office is anything to go by yet it’s so controlled; it’s as if that’s how much power he wants people to feel. Imagine he unleashes everything. Soren doesn't want to be anywhere near him for that.

Soren gulps, clenching and unclenching his sweaty hands at his side, uneasy. He never thought an Enigma’s presence could be so eerie. The suppressant is the only thing keeping him from bending over in submissiveness and leaking with arousal. That will be bad, real bad. His ass will be busted.

Keep it together, Fox. He says in his head.

Soren has never been so glad that his scent gland is on his inner thigh. The only way Reign will ever find out he’s an omega is if he gets his face between his legs and that's never going to happen.

“I see you have something against sitting down, Mr. Fox.” he finally speaks and Soren mentally stops him from visibly flinching.

“I’d rather stand.”

“Sit down, Beta.” his voice vibrates through and Soren doesn’t even realize when he obeys as he sinks into one of the empty seats in front of the desk.

Suddenly, a file is placed on the desk in front of him by the man’s secretary. Soren grabs his pen and looks for where to sign; the only thing that stops him is the enigma’s voice, cutting through Soren’s soul like a blade.

“Shouldn’t you read what’s inside before you sign?”

Soren’s hand stills mid-air, the pen hovering above the page. He blinks at him. “I believe you don’t have anything in here that requires I become a human sacrifice, do you?”

Reign looks at him with a sparkle of amusement in his eyes. “You are either naive or pretending to be. I’m starting to think you are just like your name, Mr. Fox.”

Soren hands hover over the file. “Do I get the money if I sign?” He doesn't want to think about it; he doesn't want to back out. He's here; it's now or never and Soren picks now.

Reign interlocks his hands. “Yes,”

“That's good enough for me,” he says and then he doesn't hesitate as he signs his name all over the pages and as soon as it's done, the secretary snatches it from the table and hands it over to Reign.

Soren watches in silence as the Enigma goes through the pages before handing it back to his secretary and with a motion of his hand, the secretary proceeds to place a check on the table in front of Soren, who stares at the amount glaring with the largest eyes.

It's more than what's needed for his sister's hospital. His hands tremble as he picks up the check.

“I believe that should be enough for your sister’s surgery.”

Soren nods too eagerly, not tearing his eyes away from the piece of paper that's about to turn his whole world around. None of Soren’s matches can get him this amount of money.

“For the record,” Reign continues calmly, “this isn’t charity.”

Soren stiffens slightly, finally lifting his gaze.

“This is a contract,” Reign continues. “And you will uphold your end.”

“I will,” Soren replies immediately. Too fast and too sharp. “I’m not backing out.”

All he has to do is pretend for a year and he will be fucking rich! This is not so bad.

“Also…,” Reign begins, then he leans his forearms on the table, dark eyes fixed on Soren's face, dangerous, making the hair on his body rise.

Soren’s stomach churns.

“If you have any secret that will destroy my reputation, my company, or the deal I’m trying to secure…” Reign proceeds to say, voice low and the temperature in the office suddenly seems to drop with the pheromones around him, “…you will tell me now.”

Soren gulps thickly and suddenly feels something press against his chest, heavy and suffocating. His pulse thuds loudly in his ears while his hands slightly tremble around the check.

Don’t panic. He chants in his head. Don’t hesitate. Don’t give yourself away. Fuck.

Soren forces his face to stay neutral, schooling his expression into confusion. “A secret?” He echoes, letting out a small scoff. “What kind of secret could a nobody like me have?”

Reign doesn’t move. His eyes stay locked on Soren’s, sharp and searching, like he’s waiting for something to slip.

“You’d be surprised,” Reign says quietly.

Soren shrugs his shoulders. “I’m a Beta, I fight, I drink sometimes, I’m broke and I'm here, selling my soul away just to save my sister.” He meets Reign’s gaze again. “That’s about it.”

For a long moment, Reign simply stares at him, unmoving. Then, slowly, he straightens. “Good,” he says. “I don’t tolerate dishonesty.”

Soren swallows. “Neither do I.”

It’s a lie but what the enigma doesn't won't hurt him. Soren is a born liar.

“Before we go public, I'll give you a week to take care of your sister and my Assistant will pick you up. So, run along now, little Beta.”

Instantly, Soren rises to his feet, wearing a smile. “I promise you won't regret it, Mr. Montgomery.”

The Enigma doesn't say anything; instead, he gives a nod and Soren turns to leave but as soon as he arrives at the large glass door, the enigma’s voice crams the space.

“Mr. Fox,”

Soren tries not to flinch at the iciness of his tone as he slowly turns to look at the man. He's not going to change his mind, is he? “I-ss there anything else, Mr. Montgomery?” he shutters.

Reign rises from his seat and then he crosses the room in long yet elegant steps with his hands shoved in his pocket and his large coat over his wide shoulders.

He reaches Soren in seconds but he doesn't stop, causing Soren to take a step back, retreating till his back hits the wall and Reign crowds him with both his controlled pheromones and his large body.

Soren has taken down even the strongest alpha in the ring but right now, he feels small and trapped like a kitten. He doesn't like this feeling.

Soren’s heart beats so fast and hard that he feels it's going to rip out of his chest as he slowly looks up to meet Enigma's dark, soulless brown eyes.

“Mr. Montgomery,” he calls softly, holding his breath not to breathe in his scent. He smells good and Soren’s Omega body can’t take that much.

Reign looks at him with his glinting eyes, like a predator to his prey. Then he hooks his finger under Soren's chin, lifting his face. Soren can feel the heat of the enigma's body bleeding into his own space.

Reign studies him in silence, thumb pressing lightly beneath Soren’s jaw, not gentle but not rough either. “I gave you a chance, Beta,” he begins, his breath softly fanning against Soren's face, and fuck, his heart races even faster. Soren feels like he's going to die.

"Whatever you're hiding, you better hide it well and hope I don’t find out because…” "Reign continues," then he trails off, moving towards Soren's ear and whispers. "…I don't give second chances."

In an instant, all the red alarms in Soren's head beeps red and his instinct screams flight.

Reign moves back, eyes still fixed on Soren's face. “You have a unique scent for a Beta,”

Soren eyes wide. Fuck. He needs stronger suppressants.
