Introduction

My mother smiled into the microphone at my engagement party and announced to the entire elite circle: "My daughter used to be a high-end escort."

That was just the beginning.

By the next morning, she had drugged me and framed me in bed with my sister's boyfriend.

My fiancé walked away.

My sister wore my wedding dress.

And my mother simply shrugged: "She's just a better fit to be a billionaire's wife."

Twenty years later, I am the untouchable matriarch of a billion-dollar empire.

My sister's daughter—a perfect copy of the woman who stole my wedding—is now trying to marry my son to secure her place in high society.

When they stood before me seeking my blessing, I just took a sip of my tea and said: "I don't approve."

Chapter 1

————

The clinking of crystal champagne flutes echoed through the ballroom. It was the night of my engagement to Julian Vance, New York's youngest billionaire.

But the smile on my face froze when my mother, Eleanor, stepped up to the microphone. The crowd quieted down, expecting a touching toast from the city's most beloved philanthropist.

Eleanor smiled—a warm, motherly beam that had fooled the press for decades—and spoke into the mic. "You know, I am so thrilled for my darling Victoria. Though, let's be honest, she's come a long way. After all, she used to be a high-end escort."

The room went dead silent. A few people gasped.

My blood ran cold. I stared at her, searching her eyes for a hint of a cruel joke. But there was only that polished, venomous smile.

Before I could process the humiliation, Julian pulled me behind his broad back. His jaw was tight. "Eleanor," he said, his voice a low warning, "that is a completely inappropriate joke to make at our engagement."

Later that night, Eleanor cornered me. She dabbed at her perfectly made-up eyes with a silk handkerchief. "Oh, darling, don't be upset. I only said it to test Julian's sincerity. I had to know if he would defend you. And he did! You should be thanking me."

I wanted to scream. But like a fool, I swallowed my anger.

The night before the wedding, she cooked me a private dinner. It was a rare gesture of maternal affection. I took one bite of the soup.

Then, my world went black.

When I groggily opened my eyes, the sun was blinding. I wasn't in my bridal suite. I was in a hotel room, and lying right next to me—naked—was Dorian Thorne, my sister Seraphina's boyfriend.

Panic seized my throat. Before I could even move, the door clicked open.

Julian stood there in his tailored tuxedo, ready to pick me up for the wedding. The bouquet of roses slipped from his hand, hitting the floor. His eyes darted between Dorian and me, and his face crumbled. Tears welled up in his eyes. "So... your mother wasn't lying after all."

Seraphina burst in right behind him. She let out a dramatic shriek and slapped Dorian hard across the face. "How could you do this to me?!" she sobbed, playing the victim flawlessly.

The wedding went on as planned that afternoon. Except the bride was Seraphina, and the groom was Julian.

Dorian, enraged and humiliated, threw all my clothes into a metal trash can and set them on fire in the courtyard. "You're the most despicable woman I've ever met!" he spat, the flames reflecting in his furious eyes. "Stealing your own sister's boyfriend?"

I stood there in my torn robe, tears streaming down my face, and looked at my mother.

Eleanor didn't even blink. She smoothed her Chanel dress and said flatly, "Your sister is just a better fit to be a billionaire's wife than you are, Victoria. Accept it."

That was twenty years ago. I cut ties with them, legally changed my last name to Sinclair, and built my own empire from the ashes.

Now, twenty years later, the newest name on the Forbes billionaire list walked up to me at a high-society gala. It was my son, Alex Sinclair.

"Mom," Alex smiled, a beautiful young woman clinging to his arm. "If you approve of her, we'll announce our engagement tonight."

I looked at the girl's face. She had the exact same doe eyes and perfectly sculpted jawline as my sister, Seraphina.

Isabella Vance.

Berklee College of Music graduate.

5'9", 115 pounds.

Her mother was a renowned socialite, her father once New York's richest man, and her grandmother—my mother—was a celebrated global philanthropist.

On paper, she was flawless.

"I don't approve," I said.

The words cut through the murmur of the gala. The music seemed to stop, and New York's elite froze, their eyes darting toward us. Even my own son flinched.

Alex blinked, visibly confused. "Mom... when I told you about Isabella, you said you liked her. What changed?"

"I hadn't met her in person," I said, my voice cold. "Now I have."

Whispers erupted. Isabella's face flushed a deep, furious red. She was used to being adored; she had never been rejected in her life.

"Ms. Sinclair," Isabella said, her voice trembling but trying to maintain her posture. "Is it my manners? My outfit? Please, just tell me. I can change!"

"You don't need to change," I said, taking a slow sip of my Earl Grey tea. "You just will never step foot into the Sinclair family."

A guest, trying to curry favor, cleared his throat. "Ms. Sinclair, perhaps you haven't heard. Isabella's grandmother is Eleanor Sterling, the great philanthropist. She has helped countless people."

"Exactly," another chimed in. "Eleanor raised her perfectly. You don't have to worry about her character."

I almost laughed. So, my mother even indoctrinated the next generation?

Alex leaned in, his brow furrowed. "Mom... did Isabella do something wrong?"

"This has nothing to do with her," I replied flatly.

"Then why?" Isabella finally snapped, her tears ruining her makeup. "Why won't you let me into this family? What did I do wrong? Tell me!"

My BFF sent the hot stranger a voice note...
Of me saying I want to climb him like a tree.
And he just. Texted. Back.

It's the dog's fault, really.
If this untrained Great Dane I'm walking had any manners at all, I never would've ended up here:
With my leash wrapped around the most gorgeous man I've ever seen.

Lucky for me, the guy is a good sport about it.
(Although his joke that “Dogs take after their owners” hits a little too close to home when Rufus starts humping his leg.)
He leaves me with his business card and a smile that makes my knees weak.

I'm still pinching myself as me and the bestie resume our walk.
“Methinks you had a little crush on him,” she accuses.
Not thinking and a little flustered by the whole experience, I reply, “I’d wrap my legs around his waist tighter than that leash.”

THAT'S when she reveals that she'd been recording my response.
THAT'S when she gives me the most devilish grin I've ever seen and says, “You're welcome.”
And THAT'S when she hands me my phone and reveals...

She sent the recording to him.

My heart is in my throat as those three little dots appear…
Then a text.
“PROVE IT.”

"Eyes up here," he said.

My gaze snapped to his. He was smiling, causing my heart to skip a painful beat. Before I could respond, the music began, and my body instinctively reacted to the sweet melody.

I found myself molded to Lex's will, my feet irresistibly following the dance steps.

The crowd gasped as Lex pulled me into a more intimate position, his hands roaming over my body in a seductive manner.

The experience was both terrifying and magical, allowing me to feel every longing emotion through the dance.

I soon found myself lost in his arms.

When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.

The ballroom fell silent.

Was he about to kiss me?
