The Hidden Path 1.1
The machine unfolded.
That was the only word Aiden's exhausted brain could find.
It unfolded.
Panels shifted.
Limbs extended.
Weapons rotated into place with horrifying precision.
Within seconds, the sleek metallic pod had transformed into a towering combat construct nearly three meters tall.
Its single crimson optic swept across the cavern.
TARGETS IDENTIFIED.
NON-HUMAN LIFEFORMS: HOSTILE.
EXTERMINATION AUTHORIZED.
Aiden slowly peeked around the pillar.
"...Hold on."
He raised a finger.
"You literally met them four seconds ago."
The robot ignored him.
"Bit judgmental, don't you think?"
Its optic locked onto the giant creature.
Energy began gathering inside the barrel mounted on its right arm.
The giant let out another thunderous roar.
The smaller creatures scattered deeper into the cavern.
Not away from the robot.
Away from the battlefield.
Aiden frowned.
"...They've seen this before."
The realization hit him like a freight train.
This wasn't the first time these machines had come here.
The robot fired.
A lance of white energy ripped across the chamber.
The giant twisted with astonishing speed for something its size.
The blast missed its head—
—but carved a glowing trench through one of the massive pillars.
The entire column collapsed.
Stone exploded everywhere.
Aiden threw both hands over his head.
"This is why we can't have nice archaeological sites!"
Chunks of rock rained down around him.
His backpack snagged on a broken stone.
He yanked it free—
—and something metallic slid across the floor.
The key.
"...No."
It skidded directly into the open.
Between the giant...
and the robot.
"Oh, you've got to be kidding me."
Both stopped moving.
The giant stared at the key.
The robot scanned it.
Its optic flashed rapidly.
UNKNOWN ARTIFACT DETECTED.
PRIORITY UPDATED.
RECOVER OBJECT.
"Oh, now it's important."
Aiden groaned.
"Typical."
The robot charged forward.
So did the giant.
Unfortunately...
so did Aiden.
Halfway there he realized something.
"This is a terrible plan."
He kept running anyway.
The key bounced across the stone floor.
Aiden dove.
The robot reached.
The giant slammed one enormous hand down.
BOOM!
The entire chamber shook.
Aiden rolled underneath the giant's arm, grabbed the key and immediately regretted every decision that had led to this moment.
"Mine!"
A pulse of blue light erupted from the key.
Time...
slowed.
Dust froze in midair.
The robot halted.
The giant became perfectly still.
Even the falling stones stopped.
Only Aiden remained able to move.
He blinked.
"..."
"...That's new."
A soft chime echoed through the cavern.
Not from the key.
From the walls.
The ancient symbols carved into every pillar began glowing.
One after another.
Like stars appearing in the night sky.
Thousands of them.
The light spread across the chamber in intricate geometric patterns.
The giant slowly lowered its massive head again.
The robot, however...
did something unexpected.
It knelt.
Its weapons folded away.
Its crimson eye dimmed to amber.
A different voice emerged.
Calm.
Almost human.
IDENTIFICATION CONFIRMED.
Aiden frowned.
"...Confirmed?"
WELCOME... CUSTODIAN.
He looked over both shoulders.
"...There's... nobody else here."
Silence.
WELCOME... CUSTODIAN.
Aiden pointed at himself.
"...Me?"
The machine remained motionless.
Its amber eye focused directly on him.
ACCESS GRANTED.
The key in Aiden's hand became warm.
Very warm.
Symbols appeared along its surface that hadn't been there before.
Tiny lines of blue light spread across the metal like veins.
Aiden stared.
"I swear that wasn't there five minutes ago."
The giant suddenly growled.
Not threateningly.
Urgently.
It looked toward the darkness beyond the cavern.
Listening.
Then Aiden heard it too.
More machines.
Far away.
Marching.
Metal echoed through ancient stone.
One...
then several.
Then dozens.
The amber eye of the robot flickered violently.
WARNING.
PURSUIT UNITS APPROACHING.
ESTIMATED ARRIVAL...
It paused.
THREE MINUTES.
Aiden sighed.
"Three minutes?"
He looked toward the endless darkness.
"That's... objectively not enough minutes."
The robot slowly raised one arm.
Not as a weapon.
It pointed toward a narrow crack in the far wall.
A passage Aiden hadn't noticed before.
PRIMARY CUSTODIAN MUST SURVIVE.
The giant immediately stepped beside Aiden.
Shielding him.
The smaller creatures emerged from the shadows once more.
This time...
they weren't watching him with curiosity.
They formed a living corridor leading toward the hidden passage.
Aiden looked from the creatures...
to the giant...
to the machine.
"...I'm sorry."
"Am I being rescued..."
"...by everyone?"
The amber eye flickered one last time.
GO.
A deafening metallic roar echoed through the tunnels.
Much closer now.
The first of the pursuit units had arrived.
The giant bellowed and charged into the darkness.
The robot turned to face its own kind.
Weapons unfolded once more.
Not toward Aiden.
Toward the approaching machines.
Aiden hesitated.
Every instinct told him to stay.
To find answers.
Instead, he heard his old professor's voice in his head:
"A good scientist knows the difference between courage and stupidity."
He glanced at the incoming lights.
"...Today's lesson..."
"...is definitely stupidity."
Clutching the ancient key, Dr. Aiden Cole sprinted toward the hidden passage.
Behind him...
the first shot was fired.
And the ancient cavern erupted into war.
