Chapter 1
Dr. Aiden Cole was not having a good day. Scratch that—he was not having a good year. Or a good life, if he was being honest, which he usually tried to avoid.
The ship’s cockpit was a claustrophobic mess of tangled wires, half-empty coffee cups, and blinking lights that Aiden was 90% sure were just there to make him anxious. He sat slumped in his chair, staring at the swirling nothingness of space outside, contemplating the profound question of whether he had left the stove on back home. Not that it mattered—home was several light-years away and rapidly running out of oxygen, but hey, a man could worry.
The console in front of him beeped—a sharp, irritating sound that seemed designed specifically to ruin his day. Aiden squinted at the flashing screen. “Unidentified signal detected,” it announced in a tone that Aiden swore sounded smug.
“Oh, great,” Aiden muttered, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “Just what I needed. Another mystery signal from the middle of nowhere. As if the last one didn’t nearly fry my circuits.”
He leaned forward, his fingers dancing over the controls with the kind of dexterity that came from years of avoiding actual work. The screen flickered, displaying a fuzzy image that slowly resolved into… something. Aiden tilted his head, squinting at the structure that loomed out of the planet’s atmosphere like a bad omen.
It looked ancient, the kind of ancient that made pyramids look like IKEA furniture. Spires jutted out at odd angles, half-covered in glowing vines that seemed to pulse with their own internal rhythm. It was almost pretty, in a “this-is-definitely-a-trap” kind of way.
“Alright, Aiden,” he said to himself, his voice tinged with the kind of manic energy that came from too many sleepless nights. “This is probably fine. It’s not like every ancient alien structure you’ve encountered has tried to kill you. Oh wait…”
He tapped a few more buttons, sending the ship into a slow descent toward the planet. The whole vessel shuddered as it broke through the atmosphere, and Aiden winced as the hull groaned like it was about to fall apart. “Steady, girl,” he murmured, patting the console as if that would help. “Just get me down there in one piece, and I promise I’ll clean out the coffee stains. Maybe.”
The ship’s lights flickered, and Aiden’s stomach dropped as the console sparked. The image on the screen was suddenly overtaken by swirling energy readings that danced across the display like a neon rave. Aiden’s eyes widened as he watched the data scroll by, half fascinated, half terrified.
“That… that’s not normal,” he said, his voice cracking slightly. “And when I say not normal, I mean ‘this is how people die in horror movies’ not normal.”
He grabbed the communicator, his fingers trembling slightly. “Command, this is Dr. Cole. I’ve found something. Something big. Possibly even bigger than the time I accidentally turned my kitchen into a zero-gravity zone.”
He paused, waiting for a response that didn’t come. Just static. Aiden let out a long, exasperated sigh. “Of course, the one time I actually need you guys…”
With a resigned shake of his head, Aiden set the ship down on the planet’s surface. The landing was less than graceful, with the ship skidding slightly before coming to a jerky stop. Aiden felt every bump and jolt in his bones.
He sat there for a moment, staring at the controls as if they might somehow offer him an excuse to stay in the safety of the cockpit. But the structure loomed large on the screen, its darkened windows staring back at him like empty eye sockets. Something about it was undeniably compelling—like a puzzle begging to be solved.
“Alright, Aiden,” he muttered, grabbing his gear and heading for the exit. “Time to go poke the ancient alien bear. What’s the worst that could happen?”
The door slid open with a hiss, and Aiden stepped out onto the planet’s surface. The air was cool and damp, carrying a faint, earthy scent that reminded him of old libraries and forgotten corners of the world. He looked up at the towering structure before him, its spires reaching toward the sky like skeletal fingers.
Aiden swallowed hard, his nerves jangling with a mixture of excitement and dread. “Well, here goes nothing,” he said, flashing a grin at the ominous building. “Let’s see if you’ve got any surprises for me, Aetheria.”
With that, he started forward, his steps quick and light, as if he could outrun whatever fate awaited him inside.
And somewhere deep within the ancient ruins, something stirred in response.
