Introduction

Do you remember the story of Rapunzel, the long golden-haired girl trapped in a tower.

And do you remember the witch that took her, because of a feud from both siblings. The woman no one knew the tower was originally built for.

What you don't know was that that witch was once a Queen. And across the kingdoms of Arrandelle and Seatopia, jealousy does more than poison hearts between two sisters, it created curses.

When Princess Athalia, driven by envy and desperate longing, forges a forbidden pact to gain beauty and influence, she unknowingly ignites a chain of events that twists love into obsession and ambition into ruin.

The sorcerer’s bargain demands an impossible pact, else she will face destruction. But how long will the result of Athalia’s ambition and jealousy grow?

This is the untold origin of the witch and Rapunzel's parents, reimagined into a darker tale where every spell demands a sacrifice and every fairy tale begins with a sin.

Chapter 1

An old sorceress sat in silence upon her crescent-shaped chair, its curved frame cradling her like a relic of another age. Wisps of silver smoke drifted lazily from the glowing runes stitched into her robes, curling through the air as though alive.

Her grandchildren gathered at her feet, their small faces lifted toward her, bright with wonder. Their eyes shimmered with anticipation, already lost in worlds not yet spoken.

“Grandmother…” the eldest whispered, tugging gently at her sleeve. “Please tell us a story. A real magic one.”

A soft smile touched her lips. The lines on her face shifted like ancient spells stirring from a long slumber. She raised her crystal staff and tapped it lightly against the floor.

At once, a warm golden light bloomed across the room, wrapping the children in a gentle glow.

“Do you remember the tale of Rapunzel?” she asked, her voice smooth and deep with memory. “The girl with hair bright as the morning sun? The story told beside crackling fires, whispered in the hush of night, woven into tapestries, and sung by wandering bards?”

She leaned closer, lowering her voice until it became a secret shared only with them.

“Most remember only the tower… the witch… and the thief,” she murmured. “But every legend has a beginning—one the world forgets. Not by chance… but because people prefer the glitter to the truth beneath it.”

Her gaze softened, distant.

“Few recall the peaceful days of this kingdom… or the two princes whose choices shaped its fate in ways they never imagined. Yet every great story begins long before danger shows its face.”

“Long before the tower.

Long before the witch.

Long before Rapunzel was ever born.”

She lifted her staff once more, and the golden light deepened, painting the children’s faces in soft amber hues.

“It began with a kingdom at peace,” she said quietly. “A royal family untouched by the trials that awaited them… and two brothers whose quiet steps would one day shake their world to its core.”

Her eyes gleamed with something ancient.

“This story does not begin with a tower,” she whispered.

“It begins with a kingdom called Arrandelle.”

---

Arrandelle was a land of quiet splendor—its rivers winding like veins of silver, its mountains crowned with frost that gleamed beneath the sun. At its heart stood a palace of white stone, strong and elegant, glowing at dawn like a beacon guiding the kingdom into each new day.

Within its marble halls lived a royal family beloved by all.

King Jeremy of Arrandelle ruled with reason and honor, a man shaped equally by crown and battlefield. At his side stood Queen Elizabeth, whose wisdom was matched only by her gentle presence. When she walked among her people, they spoke of her as one speaks of rain after drought—soft, needed, and deeply cherished.

Together, they had two sons.

Prince Adrian, the elder, was tall, composed, and sharp of mind. He carried his father’s discipline and his mother’s quiet grace. His tutors praised his diligence. The council respected his judgment. Foreign courts admired his restraint.

But admiration is not the same as love.

The kingdom respected Adrian.

It was Prince Eric they adored.

Eric was the kind of prince stories are written about long before he earns them. He remembered the names of stable boys, listened to guards as though their words mattered, shared blankets with street children during winter, and wandered the markets without fear or distance.

He smiled easily—and that smile lingered.

One morning, as he walked through the eastern market with two guards trailing behind at a respectful distance, an elderly baker waved him over.

“Your Highness,” she said, brushing flour from her apron. “Take this loaf. Fresh from the oven.”

Eric laughed softly. “If I accepted every gift, Mistress Melda, your shelves would be empty before noon.”

“Nonsense,” she replied, though her eyes softened. “You bring good fortune wherever you go.”

He thanked her—and when she turned away, he quietly left a pouch of silver upon her counter.

Some said Eric made the kingdom feel seen.

Others said Adrian made it function.

Across Arrandelle, their differences were as clear as day and night. Where Eric was warmth and light, Adrian was steadiness and structure—the unseen force that held everything together.

He oversaw court schedules, settled disputes, and worked long after others had retired. Yet even so, whispers followed him.

One afternoon, after a council meeting, two ministers spoke in hushed tones as they gathered their scrolls.

“He is thorough,” one said, unaware Adrian lingered just beyond the doorway.

“Yes,” the other replied. “But Eric has a certain… ease. People feel it.”

Adrian paused in the shadows. His jaw tightened, but he said nothing. He turned and walked away, the echo of his boots swallowed by the long corridor.

Both things were true.

And neither eased the quiet tension between the brothers.

Even Queen Elizabeth noticed it.

At supper, she watched Adrian cut his food with careful precision while Eric animatedly recounted a mishap involving a startled horse and a spilled bucket of feed. Laughter filled the room.

Adrian smiled—but only faintly.

When the meal ended, the queen touched his arm gently.

“Son,” she said, “you don’t have to carry everything alone.”

Adrian inclined his head. “It is my duty, Mother.”

“Duty does not forbid ease,” she replied softly.

But he gave no answer.

---

Morning came with pale sunlight spilling across the palace floors.

Adrian moved through the corridors with measured steps, his boots echoing against polished marble. A servant bowed as he passed.

“Good morning, Your Highness.”

“Good morning,” he replied evenly.

A stack of documents rested beneath his arm—trade reports, council letters, military updates. His day had already begun long before the first meal.

Inside the council chamber, ministers awaited him. Rowan, the eldest among them, stepped forward.

“Prince Adrian. The council is ready to discuss the new border taxes.”

Adrian set the papers down. “Then let us begin.”

Hours passed in debate—voices rising, numbers shifting, opinions clashing. Yet through it all, Adrian remained composed, precise, unwavering.

When disagreements sharpened, he intervened.

“Raising the tax too quickly will burden the farmers,” he said calmly. “We must increase it gradually to prevent unrest.”

The room quieted. Heads nodded.

“You speak wisely, Your Highness,” Rowan said.

Adrian acknowledged him with a slight bow, his expression unchanged. Praise never lingered with him. It passed through him like wind through an empty hall.

When the meeting ended, he stepped outside and exhaled slowly. His hand pressed briefly against the cool stone wall as he closed his eyes.

“Adrian?”

He turned at the sound of his name.
