Chapter 3 The Woman in the Car
~ Author's POV ~
The heavy emergency exit door clicked shut behind Ethan Cole, but the cold autumn wind whipping across the hospital’s concrete ramp did nothing to cool the sickening shame that was burning in his chest.
He had run. Like a coward cornered by his own lies, he had walked out on his wife while her IV lines were still dripping, while her telemetry monitors were still recalibrating after bringing her back from the dead.
Ethan pulled his tailored coat tighter around his shoulders and hurried down into the shadows of the underground VIP parking structure. Waiting in a secluded stall was a black Maybach with dark tinted windows, its engine purring in the damp air. As Ethan approached, the rear door unlocked with a sharp mechanical click. He slid into the leather interior and pulled the door shut.
Selene Ashford was sitting in the corner seat, looking impeccably composed in an ivory cashmere coat, an elegant smirk playing across her crimson lips. She swirled a crystal glass of sparkling water, utterly detached from the hospital emergency unfolding four floors above them.
"You took your sweet time, darling," Selene said smoothly, not even bothering to lift her gaze from her tablet. "Did the devoted husband finish wiping the tears from his frail little wife’s cheeks?"
"How did you get my private hospital suite number?" Ethan demanded. "And why the hell are you texting my personal line with merger threats while Victoria is fighting for her life?"
Selene let out a soft laugh that sent a cold shudder down Ethan’s spine.
"I make it my absolute business to know everything about the obstacles standing between me and what I want, Ethan," she replied, tilting her head. "Especially when my father is about to invest eighty-five million dollars to keep Cole Technologies out of insolvency court."
"Victoria is my wife!" Ethan’s voice cracked with raw, suppressed fury. "She went through hell on that operating table today trying to give me a child! If she discovers what I signed, it will destroy her."
"She is your wife for exactly five more days," Selene countered, her playful cadence instantly hardening into razor-sharp authority. "Until the merger closes and our marriage certificate is registered with the state board. My father does not tolerate weakness, Ethan, and he certainly does not negotiate with sentimentality. You signed the binding pre-merger stipulation. You agreed to marry me in exchange for saving your family's empire."
"I signed that stipulation under extreme corporate duress when the banks froze our credit lines!" Ethan leaned forward, his breathing ragged. "I love Victoria! I am not going to throw away four years of marriage for a business acquisition!"
Selene didn't flinch. Instead, she leaned in closer.
"Then you should have thought about that before taking our capital," Selene whispered, her dark eyes glittering with lethal certainty. "Because if you get cold feet now, Ethan, my father won't just pull the bailout funds. He has private fixers who handle messy complications quietly. You wouldn't want anything unfortunate to happen to your dear Victoria before our deal is finalized, would you?"
A suffocating dread gripped Ethan’s throat. "Are you threatening my wife's life?"
"Am I? I'm just explaining the rules of the world you just bought into," Selene smiled, reaching out to gently pat his cheek with two fingers. "Now get out of my car, straighten your tie, and prepare the joint press release for the board."
Three stalls away in the dim underground structure, a second car was completely motionless. Inside the passenger seat, Margaret Cole watched through tinted glass as her son stepped out of Selene’s vehicle, his head bowed, his shoulders slumped under an invisible weight.
She didn't need to hear the conversation to know that Selene had tightened the leash. She could see it in the defeated way Ethan walked toward the elevator bank.
Good, Margaret thought, her jaw set in rigid, unforgiving lines. Let him swallow his pride. Let him hurt for a few weeks. It was a small price to pay compared to watching him drown in bankruptcy for a woman who should never have been allowed into their family in the first place.
Margaret closed her eyes for a fleeting second, the bitter memories of twenty-five years ago clawing at her mind. Richard Hale. The public humiliation on what should have been her wedding day. The older sister who had stolen everything from her.
Margaret didn't know the full extent of Harold Ashford’s underworld connections, and she didn't care to ask. She had only one singular purpose left in this life: to see Ethan crowned at the pinnacle of high society, completely severed from the Hale bloodline that had poisoned her own youth.
If Victoria Hale had to be discarded, broken, and crushed to achieve that victory, Margaret would not lose a single night of sleep.
Four floors above, inside the sterile stillness of the recovery suite, Victoria sat clutching the thin hospital blanket, her hands trembling so violently that the IV catheter in her wrist throbbed with a dull ache.
Ethan’s hurried departure and the panicked evasion in his eyes had left a hollow void in her chest. She reached over to the bedside locker, pulled her own smartphone from her handbag, and unlocked the screen with her shaking fingers.
She stared at Ethan's contact photo for several long seconds, the man who had sworn to protect her, now reduced to a stranger running from secrets. With a tight breath, Victoria bypassed his name and instead, dialed his executive secretary’s private extension.
The line rang just twice.
"Mr. Cole's executive office, Rachel speaking."
"Rachel," Victoria said, fighting to keep her voice from breaking into sobs. "It's Victoria."
An immediate, unnatural silence fell over the receiver. The distant click of keyboard keys abruptly stopped.
"Mrs. Cole!" Rachel stammered. "Are you... is everything alright? The hospital paged our office earlier regarding an emergency and…"
"Rachel, don't play dumb with me," Victoria interrupted, tears spilling freely over her lashes. "Who is Selene Ashford?"
Just that, nothing more. Victoria just asked her directly. A sharp, audible intake of breath echoed through the phone. The silence that followed stretched for five agonizing seconds, heavy with suppressed truth.
"Mrs. Cole... please do not put me in this position," Rachel whispered, her tone genuinely terrified. "I value my employment, and Mr. Cole issued an explicit directive forbidding any administrative staff from discussing the Ashford Holdings portfolio with anyone outside the executive committee."
"I am his wife!" Victoria cried out, pressing a hand against her aching ribs. "I just suffered cardiac arrest trying to carry his baby, and another woman is texting him about a secret marriage contract! Tell me who she is now!"
"I am sorry, Victoria. I am so, so sorry," Rachel choked out, sounding on the verge of tears herself. "If you really want the truth about Selene Ashford and the contract Ethan signed... you need to make your husband tell you before the merger closes. Please, pretend I never spoke to you."
And then, the line clicked dead.
Victoria lowered the phone to her lap, her chest heaving as the pieces connected with terrifying clarity. Her father’s warning echoed in her ears immediately.: ‘Do not sign anything. Stay away from the Ashford name.’
It wasn't a misunderstanding. It was a calculated, total betrayal.
Down in the parking garage, Ethan stood near the concrete elevator pillar, his heart beating fast after the meet with Selene. He reached into his coat to pull out his phone, desperate to call his corporate attorney and search for any loophole in the Ashford merger terms.
PING.
A high-priority notification chime echoed through the quiet garage. An encrypted text, forwarded directly from Selene.
Ethan unlocked the screen immediately, and then the breath ripped violently from his lungs.
It was a high-resolution photograph taken less than three minutes ago through the fourth-floor exterior glass window of Victoria’s private recovery suite.
The picture showed Victoria alone in the dim room, looking frail and defenseless with IV lines taped across her wrists, clutching her phone to her ear with tears streaming down her face.
Beneath the photograph, a single line of text from Selene illuminated the dark concrete pillar:
"Look how easy she is to touch. One word from my father, and she never leaves that room alive. Five days, Ethan. Don't get cold feet."
Ethan stared at the glowing screen in paralyzing terror, the device shaking uncontrollably in his grip.
Selene didn't just have corporate lawyers and bailout capital. She had operatives positioned inside the hospital, watching his wife through the glass right now.
And Ethan was the one who had brought the wolves straight to her bedside.
