Three years later, their dream life is crumbling. Infertility strains their marriage, Ethan's company teeters on the edge of bankruptcy, and a dangerous business deal binds him to another woman.
Just when Victoria discovers she's carrying the child they had prayed for, a devastating accident changes everything. Betrayed by the man she trusted most and framed for a crime she never committed, she loses not only her marriage but also the life she thought she knew.
Forced to disappear, Victoria begins again under a new identity, unaware that an even darker secret has tied her fate to the people who ruined her. As buried lies, blood ties, and long-hidden betrayals begin to unravel, those who conspired against her discover that some truths can never stay buried.
But when the past finally catches up with them, will Ethan uncover the truth before he loses Victoria forever... or has fate already written an ending that no amount of regret can change?
Chapter 1
~Victoria's POV~
"Mrs. Cole, if we proceed with this transfer protocol today, there is a very real chance you will not leave this hospital alive."
Dr. Whitfield didn’t raise his voice, no tremor in his tone. Just brutal, unvarnished facts dropping one after the other like lead bricks on my chest.
"Six failed IVF cycles in three years," he said, looking down at the medical file spread across his lap instead of meeting my eyes. "Severe intra-uterine scarring from your previous undetected ectopic rupture, compounded by escalating ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Your cardiovascular system is simply no longer responding to the heavy stimulation meds the way a normal twenty-four-year-old body should. If we attempt this high-dose hormonal implantation, your blood pressure will bottom out under cardiac stress. The hospital ethics board explicitly refused clearance for this procedure this morning."
A heavy silence settled over the sterile consultation room.
I looked down at my trembling fingers gripping the examination bed. I let the doctor's words echo in the quiet space, absorbing every single percentage point of danger. Then, I lifted my chin and gave him the only answer that made any sense to my heart.
"Do it."
Dr. Whitfield froze. He slowly lifted his head, staring at me as if he was convinced he had misheard.
"Mrs. Cole, I don't think you fully comprehend what I just laid out for you…"
"I understood every word you said," I interrupted immediately, my voice raspy but steady. "You said the ethics board refused clearance. You said my heart is under severe stress. You said there is a high risk of fatal arrhythmia. I heard you clearly, Dr. Whitfield."
"Then you must understand that you are actively gambling with your life on this table."
"I understand."
He closed the folder with a sharp snap, and then set it on the stainless steel tray beside my bed, and leaned forward, his face dead serious. He wanted to make sure I saw every crease of concern on his brow before I threw my life away.
"Six failed cycles, Mrs. Cole. Severe endometrial trauma. Anesthesia intolerance. Unstable blood pressure. I need you to look past your grief and really listen to me. This isn't just another routine fertility setback. If your cardiovascular system collapses during catheter placement or recovery, we may not be able to pull you back."
I didn't blink. I didn't let my gaze waver for a fraction of a second.
I reached into my bag on the side chair, pulled out the notarized legal document I had prepared with my attorney that morning, and laid it flat against his clipboard.
"I signed the comprehensive liability waiver," I said. "You and the hospital are completely released from legal responsibility. Do it. I want to carry his child. Ethan's baby."
Just that. That was all I gave him. But every single syllable was carved from four years of sheer, unyielding devotion.
Dr. Whitfield stared at me for a long, painful minute, searching my face for any crack in the armor, some tiny flicker of doubt or terror that would give him an excuse to cancel the procedure and send me home. But he found nothing. Because I wasn't going to back down. Not today, not after everything we had suffered.
He couldn't know what the last three years had felt like. He couldn't know the hollow ache of walking past the empty nursery in our home every morning. He didn't hear the venomous whispers of Ethan's mother, Margaret Cole, reminding me at every family gathering that a woman who couldn't carry an heir was nothing more than an expensive burden to her son.
Most of all, he didn't know the look on Ethan's face whenever we walked through the park and saw a young father lifting his toddler onto his shoulders.
Ethan never said a word. He never blamed me. He would just squeeze my hand, offer a quiet, patient smile, and bury his longing deep behind twelve-hour workdays. But I saw that flash of pain in his eyes every single time. And it tore at my soul worse than any physical blade.
I was going to give him his family. Even if it took everything I had left.
Dr. Whitfield let out a long, defeated exhale, adjusting his glasses. "May heaven forgive us both. We begin prep in twenty minutes. No deep general anesthesia, we rely strictly on localized nerve blocks and mild sedation. Your heart will not survive heavy narcosis."
I don't know how to explain the agony of that procedure to anyone who hasn't felt it.
Without general anesthesia to put my consciousness under, every millimeter of the transfer felt like burning iron tearing through raw scar tissue. The pain radiated deep into my pelvic bones and up through my spine.
I gripped the steel side-rails of the gurney, squeezing until the skin over my knuckles went ghost-white. I bit down on the inside of my lip until I tasted copper. I didn't scream, I didn't plead with them to stop. I just lay there staring at the ceiling tiles, letting silent tears spill sideways into my hairline, refusing to let the medical staff hear me break.
To keep from losing my mind, I forced myself to picture Ethan's face. I clung to the memories of how our life together had started, letting the past wash over me like a shield against the pain.
Four years ago. A dark, rain-soaked alleyway near downtown. I was walking to a late-night corporate dinner my father had demanded I attend. I remembered the heavy, hurried footsteps behind me. I remembered turning around just a second too late.
I remembered the sight of an iron pipe swinging violently toward my temple, and then Ethan Cole, a total stranger in a tailored business suit, throwing his entire body between me and the weapon.
The sickening, wet thud of metal fracturing bone. Ethan collapsing to the pavement, coughing blood onto the wet asphalt while the attacker fled into the night.
I remembered sitting in that hospital waiting room for seventy-two straight hours, clutching his bloodstained coat, refusing to leave his side even when the nurses pleaded with me to go home and rest. When he finally opened his eyes, the first thing he whispered wasn't a complaint about his shattered shoulder, he asked if I was safe.
In the weeks that followed, debt turned into gratitude, gratitude turned into long midnight conversations, and conversation blossomed into an all-consuming love. Within two months, we were standing before an officiant.
I remembered the cold fury on my father Richard Hale’s face when I told him I was marrying Ethan. My father, a reclusive billionaire who had built his empire in shadows, had stared at me with eyes like ice.
"You know nothing about the family you are marrying into, Victoria," he had warned me, his voice devoid of warmth. "Nothing. You are walking into a trap you cannot possibly understand."
I hadn't listened. I loved Ethan more than I feared my father's cryptic parables.
I also remembered our wedding day. Margaret Cole standing by the altar in designer silk, her face carved of solid granite throughout the entire ceremony. Right after we signed the registry, I had accidentally overheard Margaret cornering Ethan in the corridor, her voice sharp: "This girl will cost you everything you've built, Ethan. Mark my words."
Woven through all those memories were older, darker shadows from my childhood. Asking my father about my mother, only to be met with suffocating silence. The mahogany drawer in his private study that remained permanently locked. And a single name I had overheard two maids whispering in the hall when I was eight years old, a name forbidden in the Hale estate:
Celeste.
Why was that name flashing across my mind now, in the middle of a hospital room, while my body trembled with unbearable pain? It felt like an omen trying to claw its way to the surface.
"Catheter clear. Procedure complete," Dr. Whitfield’s voice finally cut through the haze of agony. He took off his surgical gloves, his forehead beaded with sweat.
He stood over me for a quiet moment, looking down at my pale, trembling frame. "I've practiced reproductive medicine for nearly three decades, Mrs. Cole. I have never seen a woman endure that procedure conscious without begging for mercy."
I barely had the strength to whisper. "Is it... done? Did the embryo transfer properly?"
"The transfer was technically successful," he said softly. "Now it is in the hands of fate and your body's resilience. We are transferring you to the post-op observation unit immediately. You must rest."
They rolled my gurney out of the procedure suite and down the wide, quiet recovery corridor. As the sterile lights slid past overhead, a profound wave of peace washed over my exhausted chest.
I did it, I whispered to the quiet room in my mind. I took the pain, Ethan. Our baby is finally here. Everything is going to be alright now.
I let my eyes drift shut, offering up a silent prayer of gratitude.
Right at that moment, the cardiac monitor above my bed let out an erratic chirp.
Beep... Beep....... Beep-beep-beep-beep—
The rhythm fractured. The attending nurse glanced up from her clipboard, and the color instantly drained from her cheeks.
"Doctor! Her telemetry just dropped into ventricular tachycardia! Pressure is sixty over thirty!"
Alarms detonated across the recovery bay. Heavy footsteps sprinted down the hall. Doors crashed open as a resuscitation team swarmed my bed.
"Get the crash cart in here now!"
"Her pulse is fading! Page Dr. Whitfield back to Bay 4!"
My chest felt as though an invisible vise was tightening around my ribs, crushing the breath right out of my throat. My vision began tunneling, the bright lights fading into an ink-black abyss. I reached out a trembling hand toward the ceiling, desperate to hold onto the world, desperate to see my husband's face one last time.
"Eth... Ethan..."
The monitor's frantic chirping collapsed into one endless, deafening flatline tone.
"She's in full cardiac arrest! Charge the paddles to two hundred! We're losing her! Everybody clear!"
Then, the light went out, and everything vanished into the dark. And everything I knew, the pain, the fear, Ethan's face, my mother's name, all of it went with it.
