Chapter 2

"To celebrate our successful 20th anniversary of guarding the gates!" I raised my glass and clinked it with everyone, splashing wine everywhere.

"Lord Kane! Demon-Sealing War God! We will forever admire you!"

The soldiers revelled, going wild around the campfire, their usual high-pressure vigilance completely released at this moment.

"You bastard! Don't you know the rules?!" The adjutant escorted a new recruit over and threw him in front of me.

"What's wrong?" I finished the wine in my glass.

"This guy filmed the party and secretly streamed it online, which will have a very bad impact, especially since people think we're wasting Department of Defense funds..."

“I’m sorry, sir! I was wrong! I acted impulsively and forgot your rules.” He knelt on the ground and wept bitterly. “Please punish me.”

"No need!" I hiccuped. "Let me see."

The adjutant reached out and handed me the phone.

I waved happily at the camera.

Hello.

I projected the live stream from my phone onto the big screen so everyone could see it.

The live stream was filled with insults and condemnations of the soldiers on duty indulging in pleasure. As soon as they saw my face, these comments started flooding the screen even faster.

"That's him! That debauched bastard!"

"What a waste! We have to do this every seven days? It's all our money being spent!"

"Liar! Liar! Liar!"

Looking at the flood of comments, I sighed.

"At least we should be thankful that we're having a party right now, instead of fighting monsters."

"Nonsense! There are no more Warcrafts!"

"The Demon-Sealing War God must step down! Give us an explanation!"

"This incompetent bastard must be put to trial!"

"You guys..." I was about to speak when the live stream was cut off.

My communicator kept ringing, and my adjutant told me that a guest wanted to meet with me in person.

Reluctantly, I put down my glass and watched the uninvited guest slowly drive up and stop in the center of the party venue. I recognized it as the presidential limousine.

The noise gradually subsided, and everyone watched as the car door slowly opened.

"Good evening, soldiers! I'm sorry to disturb you at the most enjoyable time of your day!" President Irwin got out of the car.

"Hello, Mr. President." I saluted. "What brings you here in person?"

I never expected that President Irving would be willing to personally come and inspect the fortress.

"You've been guarding this place for twenty years, don't you miss home?" Owen patted my shoulder.

I turned my head away. "What can I do if I miss home? I will continue to uphold my mission."

“I admire you, Kane the War God.” Owen rubbed his hands together. “So I think you can get some rest now. After serving us for so many years, you deserve to enjoy your retirement.”

The fortress was silent. No one could be sure what they had heard. Everyone stared at the president in astonishment.

Of course they know what that means, and so do I.

"The responsibility of guarding the monster portal is heavy; I cannot leave." I stood at attention and saluted.

“My men will take over here, Kane.” Owen pressed the button on his headset, and dozens of groups of soldiers emerged from the shadows.

"We await your orders!" Their faces were full of determination and obedience, but they showed no combat experience whatsoever; they were practically fresh meat rations for the monsters.

"Are you all really in such a hurry to die?" I put away my smile and calmly looked at these guys who were about to take over the fortress.

They were frightened by what I said.

“Don’t be afraid, my soldiers, there are no more monsters.” Owen walked up to me and looked at me.

"No Warcraft?" I burst out laughing.

"You'd better not die without knowing why! Those hellish monsters can easily tear your equipment apart, pounce on your bodies, and devour your flesh!" I roared.

"We've only temporarily repelled them for twenty years; that doesn't mean we'll be safe in the future!"

“There will be no more.” Owen clapped his hands, interrupting me.

“I know your concerns, Kane. But I’ve brought a solution to everything.”

"Solution? Solution?" I tilted my head and looked at him. "What are you talking about?"

“This has nothing to do with you anymore, Kane.” Owen stood at attention and, in front of everyone, took out the documents.

“Kane Cassis—I am formally removing you from all your posts in the name of endangering national security.” Owen smiled and extended his hand.

"Goodbye, Demon-Sealing War God. You are nothing now."
