164 Missed Calls After They Left Me Behind
Hachimitsu · Ongoing · 10.1k Words
Introduction
I was the forty-eighth employee—and the only one not invited.
Then my team lead posted a photo of my empty seat with the caption:
Shame some people just aren’t team players.
So I turned off my phone and went to sleep.
Thirteen hours later, I woke to 164 missed calls and a text from my boss:
I screwed up. Please, for the love of God, call me.
Apparently, while I slept, the company discovered exactly how much of it depended on the employee they had left behind.
Chapter 1
BluePeak flew forty-seven employees to Miami for its company retreat.

At three thirty on Friday afternoon, the office erupted.
“The tickets are in! Check your email!”
“Oceanfront rooms. Actual oceanfront rooms.”
“They rented a private beach for us. There's a bonfire tomorrow night.”
I sat at my desk with my hands above the keyboard and stared at the final paragraph of the Project Nimbus Phase Four proposal.
Three hundred words. That was all I had left.
“Ethan, did you get your ticket?”
Sophie Carter's head appeared over the cubicle wall. She had pushed her bangs back with a yellow headband, and excitement had turned her whole face bright.
I opened my inbox.
Nothing.
“No.”
“Refresh it. It was a company-wide email.”
I refreshed.
Still nothing.
Sophie disappeared behind the divider. I heard her typing fast, probably messaging HR. Five minutes later, she stood up again. The excitement was gone.
“Fiona says you're not on the list.”
My fingers dropped to the keyboard. I finished the last paragraph, fixed a number in the budget table, and saved the file.
“Okay.”
“Okay?” Sophie's voice rose. “There are forty-eight people in this office. Forty-seven tickets went out. You're the only person missing.”
“Maybe somebody made a mistake.”
“You think Fiona accidentally forgot exactly one person?”
No. I didn't.
Fiona Blake worked in HR and spent most lunches with Derek Quinn, our team lead. The month before, she'd put me at the table beside the restroom during a department dinner.
When I'd said it was fine, she'd smiled and told me, “You like quiet, don't you?”
“I'm going to Martin,” Sophie said. Her chair scraped back.
“Don't.”
“Ethan—”
“Everything's booked. Adding someone now will turn into a whole thing.”
“You belong on the trip. Who wrote Project Nimbus Phase Four?”
“The team did.”
“You did.”
I took off my glasses and wiped one lens with my shirt. A fingerprint stayed near the edge.
“Let it go, Sophie.”
She watched me for several seconds. Her mouth tightened, but she sat down.
At four, people began closing laptops and rolling suitcases toward the elevators. The office filled with the sounds of zippers, suitcase wheels, and arguments about sunscreen.
Derek stood and stretched. His jacket was draped over one arm. When he passed my desk, he stopped.
“Not packing, Ethan?”
“I'm not going.”
He widened his eyes with practiced surprise. “You're skipping a free weekend in Miami?”
I looked up at him.
“I'm not on the list.”
“Really?” His smile sat perfectly between friendly and cruel. “Fiona must've messed up. You should talk to her. Maybe she can still fix it.”
He spoke loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear.
A few people glanced over. Nobody said anything.
Derek patted my shoulder. “Well, thanks for holding down the fort.”
Ten minutes later, I was alone.
The fluorescent lights hummed. Cold air from the vent blew against the back of my neck.
I uploaded the final package to the project drive.
Nimbus_Phase4_FINAL_0412.
Then I shut down my computer.
I leaned back and looked at the brown water stain above my cubicle. It had been there for three months. Nobody had bothered to fix it.
My phone buzzed.
The company group chat.
Fiona had posted a selfie from the airport shuttle.
MIAMI, HERE WE COME!
The replies piled up beneath it.
Best team ever.
Beach weekend!
My bag is already overweight lol.
Then Derek posted a picture from inside the plane.
One empty window seat. The shade was half open, and a clean stripe of sunlight cut across the cushion.
Shame some people just aren't team players.
Three laughing reactions appeared immediately. Then five. Then eleven.
Someone added, Guess it wasn't meant to be.
No one asked who the seat had been meant for.
They knew.
My thumb hovered over the screen. I typed three words, deleted them, and held down the power button.
Turn off?
Yes.
I put the phone in my desk drawer, took my jacket, and left.
Mr. Lawson, the evening security guard, looked up from his crossword when I reached the lobby.
“Leaving early, Ethan? Thought your people were flying south.”
“They are.”
“Then why are you still here?”
“Somebody had to stay available.”
He studied me, but he didn't press.
I rode my old bike home through rush-hour traffic. The chain slipped twice before I reached my building.
At the corner store, I bought a half bottle of cheap bourbon and a bag of salted peanuts.
My studio apartment was four hundred square feet if the landlord was feeling generous. Bed, desk, narrow closet, hot plate. Thick brown curtains blocked every bit of daylight when I pulled them shut.
I kicked off my shoes and fell onto the bed without changing.
The mattress springs complained.
I took a swallow of bourbon. It burned all the way down. Then I ate a few peanuts and listened to the crunching fill the room.
That empty seat kept coming back to me.
Shame some people just aren't team players.
I drank again and pulled the blanket over my head.
I had worked until two in the morning every night that week. Phase Four had gone through seventeen drafts. At Thursday's meeting, Derek had read my words from the screen as if they had formed in his mouth.
Martin Grant, our department director, had nodded along.
“Excellent work, Derek.”
Derek had smiled. “It was a team effort.”
Team effort.
Every page, every projection, every line of the attribution model had come from me.
I was too tired to stay angry.
So I slept.
For the next thirteen hours, while I knew nothing at all, BluePeak Media began to come apart.

Dangerous Love with the Mafia
Driven out by her adoptive mother and sexually harassed by her boss, she stumbles into a seedy bar, desperate to drown her sorrows. There she meets Alex: sharp, devastatingly handsome, and impossibly charming.
What starts as a wild one-night stand blossoms into a tender, almost surreal romance—art galleries, riverside walks, and whispered promises that feel too perfect to be real. But when Alex vanishes without a word after a morning of gentle intimacy, Sarah is left with a hollow ache and a creeping doubt.
Their encounter was no accident. Behind Alex's blue eyes and skilled touch lies a darkness far deeper than she ever imagined—and the love that burned so bright may come with a price that could destroy her.
The Rejected Luna’s Rise
Luna Ariana Volkstane slid the formal rejection request across the table. "Let's end this bond. It's better for you, me, and your first love."
He just smirked. "You want me to reject you? You think you can break our bond that easily?"
So she did. Ariana cut ties with him completely, poured herself into her career, and rose to global fame as a legendary healer, her knowledge of rare herbs, wolf anatomy, and ancient magic sought after across continents.
The powerful suitors lined up. The Alpha of an overseas empire whispered, "Ariana, hurry up and perform the severing ritual. I can't wait to claim you." A powerful pack leader vowed, "I'll be there with you the day you break the bond." A legendary wolf attorney promised, "I'll handle your rejection case with the pack council myself."
Ariana just rubbed her temples. It's not that she didn't want the split, she wanted it more than anything, it's just that the Alpha she was mated to refused to let go.
Finally, she announced, "Whoever can officially get me rejected, I'll put you at the head table of my bond-breaking celebration."
Not long after, Alpha Damian was served the official rejection request right in the middle of an emergency pack council meeting. That same afternoon, he was attacked by rogues at the gates of his own territory.
When Ariana showed up at the pack infirmary with healing herbs, she repeated calmly, "Let's sever the mate bond. It's better for you, me, and everyone else."
But the cold, untouchable Alpha pulled her into his arms, his eyes blood-red with fury. "You want me to reject you? Over my dead body."
The Vampire King's Feeder

I should hate Kane Alexander, but the more time I spend with him, the more I long for him in ways I cannot understand. I am not here to be his lover, though. I am here to be his feeder. But even before his lips graze my skin the first time, I know I would give myself to him in every way imaginable if only he should ask. Kane: I long to taste the wolf shifter, but not her blood, her body... her essence. I want her in every way imaginable. But I'm already betrothed to marry another blood-born vampire, and if I call that off, I have resigned my kingdom to yet another war. There has to be a way to keep Emory Moonraker as my feeder but not claim her in my bed. I just haven't figured it out yet, and every time I look into her jade eyes, I forget everything and everyone but her. But I have enemies, and every moment she spends here in my home, Castle Graystone, she's in danger.
Bella and Her Beast
.
Locked in her frozen tower, Bella dreamed of warmth, of touch, of freedom and of love. Cursed with the power of ice and snow, she’s spent her life alone. A secret they tried to protect the world from. Her only escape comes in the form of the books she reads. Stories of heat, desire, and the kind of love that could melt even her frostbitten heart.
Damien is the Beast. A dragon King with a temper forged in flame and a soul hollowed by duty. The world fears him. The people call him a monster. But beneath the scales and the rage lies a man who has never been touched by love.
When frost meets fire, the world shatters. She was never meant to leave her tower. He was never meant to find her. But destiny doesn’t bow to kings or care for cages and now the question burns through them both: Can Bella have her Beast? Or will the girl of snow melt in the heat of his desire?
.
"I’m keeping her."
"What?"
Before I can react, he scoops her up. Her small body fits easily in the cradle of his talons. For a split second, she looks startled, but not afraid. Her hand rests against one scaled finger, and she stares up at him with that same curious wonder, as though she’s already forgotten she was ever meant to fear me.
"Put her down," I try to command, panic threading through my thoughts. "You’ll hurt her."
"She’s ours," the beast insists, possessive and fierce. "Our snowflake."
The Devil’s Contract: Kiss Me Like A Lie
The air in the ballroom was suffocating, filled with the scent of expensive wine and predatory Alphas. I felt the familiar, terrifying burn start low in my stomach. My suppressants were failing. I am an Omega pretending to be a Beta, and my fiancé, Reign Montgomery, is a powerful Enigma who believes Omegas are nothing but weak whores.
I rushed to the restroom, locking myself in, praying the scent wouldn't leak. My hands shook as I dialed for help, but the door handle turned. Reign stood there. He didn't look at my face; he grabbed my wrist, pulling it to his nose, inhaling deeply. His dark, soulless eyes bore into mine. "You smell different," he whispered, his voice dangerously low. If he finds out what I really am, I’m dead.
Reign Montgomery promised himself he’d never get involved with an omega. Not romantically, not physically, not even by accident. He doesn’t trust them, doesn’t want them, and refuses to let anyone become a weakness.
Soren Fox has lived his whole life making sure no one ever learns what he truly is. An omega pretending to be a Beta, fighting in underground rings just to survive and keep his sister alive.
But one contract drags them into a dangerous partnership of lies, heat, and power, and when Soren is kidnapped, Reign realizes too late that the omega he never wanted has become the one person he can’t live without.
