Introduction

In a zombie apocalypse, survivors build a fortress-like base. My girlfriend and I are its lead researchers, racing to create the serum that could end the world’s collapse.

On a sampling run outside the walls, she chooses to save the “genius” colleague she just brought back—and leaves me behind to be swallowed by a horde.

With no way out, I inject myself with an unfinished prototype. I survive… but I come back as a zombie.

The difference is: I don’t lose my mind. I keep my human intelligence—and I can command other zombies. They bow instinctively, as if they’ve sensed a king.

Inside the base, that so-called genius is working with raiders beyond the walls, pushing a fake serum to control the troops and selling the defenses piece by piece to the enemy.

As the base collapses, the drugged soldiers turn on each other atop the ramparts. The chain of command snaps. Everyone is waiting to die.

Then—at the moment the walls give way and screams drown out gunfire—I stand on the ruins outside, raise my hand, and sweep it forward.

The horde behind me doesn’t attack the survivors. Like a disciplined army, it bypasses them and surgically crushes every invader.

Only then does the woman who abandoned me realize what she destroyed.

But I don’t need her regret anymore.

————

I pressed my back against the door as the infected paced outside.

I raised my left wrist. The second hand was still moving. Eileen was over twenty minutes late.

All the radio gave me was static, with the occasional burst of broken electrical noise.

I didn’t even feel like swearing.

There was only one conclusion in my head: Eileen had left.

She wasn’t coming back for me. She wasn’t turning the vehicle around.

I slowed my breathing to the bare minimum and touched the hard-shell cold tube strapped to my chest.

Inside was the serum I’d spent the last six months developing—the one thing that might still give humanity a way out. It was so close to finished. So close.

Lately I’d had the nagging sense the lab wasn’t safe, but I had no proof. I didn’t want to stir paranoia, so I’d kept the tube on me at all times, afraid our work would be destroyed before it could be completed.

I was afraid it would be buried here with me.

It had been sixteen months since the world ended.

No one had ever given the virus a real name. Everyone just knew how fast it came and how wildly it spread. From a bite to losing yourself, it rarely took more than thirty minutes.

City order collapsed within weeks. Survivors lived behind walls, behind guns, and on luck.

After that, we built a base together and called it Lighthouse—one of the few places left that could still keep power running and water clean.

My name is Raine Walker. I’m one of the lead researchers at the Lighthouse base laboratory.

I have one job there: develop the serum.

If the serum succeeds, the end of the world ends with it.

A dull thud hit the door—like someone ramming it. Then a second. Then a third.

The screws in the lock gave a faint, strained squeal.

The wooden door had swollen from water damage; its structure had been weak for a long time. It wouldn’t withstand repeated impacts.

The next second, the center of the door split open. A gray-white face forced its way through the gap, teeth grinding into splinters. Its eyes were unfocused, yet it lunged straight for the sound.

I pulled the trigger. The round punched through its brow. Blood and brain matter sprayed across the inside of the door.

Outside, the footsteps grew chaotic. The noise had drawn more of them. The numbers were increasing.

Back at Lighthouse, the instructors always said: don’t waste ammo, don’t play hero—run if you can.

But I had nowhere to run.

The back door was already blocked. The window opened onto a half-collapsed iron fence; climbing out would be the same as throwing myself into the pack.

I was in this situation because of my girlfriend, Eileen Carter.

Eileen was a researcher too. We survived the early months together—nights without electricity, spinning samples with a hand-cranked centrifuge, studying culture dishes under a gas lamp.

Then Victor appeared. Eileen had brought him back from outside—a “brilliant” scientist, she said. He’d been trapped for days in a collapsed office building. He had an old university badge, spoke in the right terminology, and could read our data.

The base was short on talent, and command was desperate for good news. Victor was assigned to the lab, and before long he was pushed into the core of the serum project.

He was competent. Steady hands. Quick reactions.

He was also good with words—especially with Eileen. Every time I urged caution, he twisted it into, “Are you being too conservative?” or “We need more aggressive trials.” Eileen started siding with him. She said I’d become stubborn, like I was guarding my territory and refusing to let anyone in.

A few hours ago, we went out to collect samples for the final stage of the serum. The team was Eileen, Victor, two security escorts, and a driver.

The samples were in the negative-pressure ward of an old hospital in the east. We needed blood and tissue from an early-infection cluster to complete the last stabilizing link in the formula.

I handled the samples. Eileen and Victor handled documentation and sealing. The two escorts cleared the route.

We had checked the path in advance. It was supposed to be safe. There shouldn’t have been trouble—yet the horde hit faster than anything we’d seen.

We had just entered the elevator shaft at the back of the hospital when we heard a chain of glass shattering outside, like a crowd tumbling down a stairwell.

The evac vehicle was waiting at the street corner. The engine was running. The driver was still inside.

The street was usually open enough. But when we burst out, we saw movement pouring from both alleys, spilling into the road like water through cracks.

The escorts opened fire from behind us, muzzle flashes stretching shadows long across the pavement.

One of them yelled for me to run—said he could hold them.

I looked back and saw three infected hit him at once. They clamped onto his armored forearm and dragged him into the alley. His shout cut off mid-word.

The other escort tried to go back for him. I grabbed him hard and pulled him forward. I told him the vehicle was right there—there was nothing to pull back.

The evac vehicle was being pushed backward by the surge. The driver slammed the horn. The windshield was smashed by fists. He was forced out, firing to clear space, and then the horde swallowed him.

A bus had flipped across the center of the road, and infected were crawling out from underneath it.

I clenched my jaw, shoved the sample case into the escort’s hands, and told him to take Eileen and Victor to the vehicle. I would draw them off.

I sprinted toward a convenience store on the opposite side and fired several shots into the air, pulling every head toward me.

It worked. They turned as if yanked by a magnet.

The escort dragged Eileen and Victor toward the vehicle. To cover them, he was seized and hauled away.

When I looped back, the vehicle door was still open. Eileen and Victor were inside.

I was less than twenty meters away. I’d pulled most of the infected off myself, and the few left I had already avoided.

It was a path I’d made. I could see it—clear as day.

Then Victor suddenly grabbed his chest and folded in on himself, wheezing like he’d inhaled water.

He said he felt wrong. Said it might be asthma. Said he couldn’t breathe.

His voice wasn’t loud, but it didn’t need to be. Eileen heard every word.

Eileen’s expression changed instantly.

She looked from him to me, then to the shadows gathering outside the vehicle. Her fingers tightened around the doorframe.

It wasn’t that she didn’t see me making it. She was calculating risk.

She slammed the door shut.

I accelerated, thinking that if I was fast enough she’d wait—just a few seconds.

She shouted through the glass, “Hold out for half an hour! We’ll come back for you! If we wait any longer, none of us get out!”

I saw her watching me from behind the windshield.

Fear. Guilt. And a decision she couldn’t bring herself to say out loud.

Eileen turned her face away and hit the gas. The tires spun, the vehicle lurched, and it shot toward the end of the street.

I chased two steps and nearly slipped. Not because I was slow—because my world had been cut loose in that second.

The memory stopped there, because the door finally gave way. It collapsed inward like a snapped bone. I didn’t have time to reload. I shoved the muzzle against the first head through the gap and pulled the trigger.

Click.

Empty.

No ammo.

I spat a short curse, grabbed a steel pipe, and swung hard, knocking the first infected back out of the doorway.

A second lunged. I jammed the pipe under its jaw and drove it into the wall, then rammed my knee into its ribs. Bone cracked, but it didn’t feel it—it only fought harder.

I snatched a chair and smashed it down. One of the legs wedged into its shoulder.

As it lost balance, I swung the pipe into its temple—once, twice—until it finally went limp.

But there were too many. The doorway was a broken dam. More bodies poured in, stepping over their own dead to reach me.

The pipe snapped. I was left gripping half of it, like a useless stick.

Something slammed into me. I hit the floor, my back crashing into a shelf.

A cold hand locked onto my shoulder. I turned and saw a mouth coming down on my throat.

I threw my forearm up to block.

A spike of pain exploded at my shoulder and neck, a hot line burrowing into my veins.

It wouldn’t let go. Teeth scraped against bone, a thin sound that made my stomach twist.

I fought to shove it off—and a second body pinned me. Then a third.

My vision started to gray out. All I could hear was my own heartbeat: thump, thump, thump—then it stuttered, broke rhythm, and ran wild.

Before my mind shattered, my fingers found the cold tube on my chest.

The casing was icy, like grabbing the last stone before drowning.

I bit the seal open. Metal taste burst across my tongue.

The needle punched into my skin. My hand was already trembling, but the motion didn’t stop.

I drove the unfinished serum into myself, every last drop.

The pain was still there. The bite was still there. The weight crushing me was still there.

But I refused to end like this.

I forced my eyes open for as long as I could and burned one thing into my mind:

Stay alive.
