Chapter 1
I can't wait for tomorrow. Laying in the field looking up at the stars I pray to the moon goddess ill make à good alpha. Father is handing me the pack tomorrow. The pack has grown under him and I have big shoes to fill. I feel the presence of my best friend as he lays down next to me. Tomorrow he take the beta title. Not only do we share the responsibility of the pack we also share a birthday. We both turned 18 last week. Our fathers want to go on a long-deserved vacation. We both will take over the pack and watch over our siblings. My twin sister will be the most annoying of the three.
We lay there until the sky starts to lighten with the dawn. “well alpha William Samuel's time to get some rest it’s a big day for us both.” He says smacking my shoulder. “watch it beta Johnathan black I can take you even now before I get the alpha power.” Making him laugh out as I get up “and then who would stand by you? My brother?” he asks “like hell he’s almost as bad as the girls. Our luck they will be mates and make annoying pups” I growl out making him laugh.
We head to the packhouse for our last night as pups. This time tomorrow we will be the leaders of our pack. Making my way to my room I smell the pack whore down my hall. I am so not in the mood for this so I turn around heading to John's room. “didn’t I just get rid of your smelly ass” “ shut up and move over Hannah is in my room and I don’t wanna deal with it.” Both of us groan “you have to do something about her after tomorrow” I sigh “ya but not like I can banish her for being a whore” “I feel sorry for whoever her mate is” with that, we rolled over and found sleep.
I had the most wonderful dream. I was running through the woods with an equally black wolf. We chased and played nipping at each other's tails and ears. The smell was addicting. Her eyes were a bright blue. In a flash all I see is red. Out of the red haze making their way to me are red angry eyes. In a panic, I search for the she-wolf but she’s gone. All that’s left is a sea of red. I feel like I’m drowning. I can’t breathe pain spreads across my body. My heart is being ripped out of my chest.
I can hear john yelling for me but I can't see him. The pain is so unbearable. Clawing at my chest trying to relieve the pain. Then shock hits as I shoot up from the bed drenched in ice water. My heart is beating so hard as I try and catch my breath. Wide-eyed I look around. I’m no longer in the woods but in John's room. John is standing by the bed with a bucket staring at me. “you okay man. You were screaming and clawing at your chest.” he asks me. Looking down I see deep scratches down my chest. Blood ran down my stomach soaking the blankets and bed under me. “I was having a nightmare but I can't remember what it was about.” shaking my head.
Looking out the window I notice the sun was high in the sky. “I'm gonna go have these looked at,” I say. Getting up heading to the door “order a new mattress use my card. I'm sorry.” “no need not like you made the choice. But hell y'all order a new mattress on you,” he says rubbing his hands together. Shaking my head leaving his room heading down to the clinic.
I had forgotten about Hannah being in my room so when my door opened it startled me. Then I smelled her and growled in frustration. “there you are will. I was looking for you all night.” she pouts out. “what are you doing in my room?” I glare at her. “why wait for you silly. You know when you make me your Luna. You'll have to stop asking me that.” if my head wasn’t already pounding her voice would cause it to. Trying to move past her and get o the stairs. “you will not be my Luna your not my mate so stop and stay out of my room.” dancing around her staying out of reach “I am your mate. You just wait two more months you'll see.” she stomps her foot crossing her arms over her chest. I'm sure this helps her get her way. But no with me. Ignoring her I just head down the stairs. I know she’s not my mate as the alpha I had been able to find my mate since 17. we cant claim our mate until they reach 18. we become more protective of our mates but our wolves won't let us tell them until they come of age.
Father believes the moon goddess did this for the alphas because unlike the rest of the wolves in the pack the alpha and beta heirs travel from pack to pack in their alliances starting at 17. alpha and beta heirs don’t have a chance to go to any multiple pack mating events until we are in our early twenties. Not only do we tour the packs strengthening the bonds between packs. We also have four years at the alpha school. For those of us not taking over at 18. for those who are taking over at the age of 18, we start alpha and beta school at 14. I had opted not to do the pack-to-pack tour as I went to school with the alpha heirs who would be the alphas by the time I was 18.
Making it to the clinic my wolf had closed the slices on my chest but they were still red and angry. I wasn’t worried about my chest I was worried about why it happened. Walking in the nurse sees my chest and rushes to me. “alpha are you okay what happened? Let's get you in a room? Follow me.” wanting to assure her I was fine I just didn’t have the energy to do it. I just followed her back. In the room, she hands me a gown to change into. Telling me the doctor would be in shortly. Taking my shirt off and tossing it in the trash I just look at the gown and shake my head. “not happening” I say to no one. Just then there's a knock on the door.
