Introduction
C-4 was strapped to my boy’s chest.
With ten minutes left, the kidnapper delivered his ultimatum:
“Bring Alessandro here, or I’ll send you both home in body bags.”
I tried accessing my hidden accounts to hire an extraction team, but the passwords had been changed.
I offered everything I owned for our lives, only to learn that my husband had drained every account to pay off a beachfront estate—for another woman.
I bit my lip until I called him. More than a dozen times before he answered.
All I got was Alessandro’s cold laugh.
“You’d really fake a kidnapping for attention?”
“The helicopter isn’t coming. Vivian’s shaken up. I’m taking her to buy a new dress. I don’t have time for your theatrics.”
Vivian’s soft voice drifted through the phone.
“Sandro, the thunder… I’m scared.”
He hung up.
In the bomb’s angry red glow, something inside me went still.
I dragged my wrist across a jagged edge until it split, tore off my wedding ring, and dropped it into the blood pooling at my feet.
Alessandro. Your wife and son are done waiting.
Seconds later, the explosion tore the night apart.
Alessandro stumbled from his Maybach and fell to his knees before the flames, screaming himself hoarse.
Chapter 1
A family traitor had me and my five-year-old son chained up in an abandoned shipyard.

Tick. Tick.
The cold, mechanical sound echoed through the abandoned shipyard, each pulse bouncing off rusted steel like footsteps closing in.
The acrid stench of gasoline mixed with the briny ocean air, forcing its way into my nostrils.
I was lashed to a rusted iron chair with coarse rope, my wrists rubbed raw into deep purple welts.
But in front of me, in far worse shape, was my son. Owen. Only five years old.
He was tied to another chair, and strapped to his narrow little chest was a block of black C-4 plastic explosive.
The red digital display ticked down mercilessly, its harsh glow washing over Owen's face—white as paper, his body seizing with an asthma attack.
"Mommy... I can't... breathe..." Owen's chest hitched with each shallow gasp, his lips parted wide, searching for air that wouldn't come.
Fat tears rolled down his cheeks and splashed onto the bomb's casing.
"Owen! Baby, look at me! Breathe with me—slow—in and out—you can do this, Mommy's right here!"
I thrashed against my restraints, dragging the chair forward, trying to inch closer to him, but heavy chains held me fast.
The man standing in the shadows let out a raspy laugh.
His name was Vernon—once a low-level soldier in the Dante family. Now he stood with the secondary detonator switch in his hand.
"Save your strength, Madelyn."
Vernon stepped forward and tossed a phone with a shattered screen onto my lap.
"Half an hour. Then that bomb blows you and your boy to pieces along with this warehouse. The great Don Dante can do anything, can't he? Why don't you give him a call?"
I bit down hard on my lower lip. Tasted blood.
My fingers trembled violently as I struggled to dial the number I knew by heart, awkwardly maneuvering with my chin and bound hands.
Alessandro Dante. My husband. The most feared mafioso in all of Italy.
One word from him and the family's helicopter could be on the ground at this shipyard in ten minutes.
The phone rang and rang. Every second of waiting flayed me alive.
Finally, someone picked up.
No urgency. No questions. What came through the speaker was Chopin drifting through the line—some nocturne, elegant and unhurried—and the delicate clink of crystal.
"Madelyn." Alessandro's voice was deep, magnetic, and dripping with impatience. "I told you—I'm with Vivian tonight. Don't interrupt me."
"Alessandro! Help us!"
I screamed, my voice cracking apart. "Owen and I have been kidnapped! The old shipyard in the West District! Owen has C-4 strapped to his chest! Less than thirty minutes! Please—send someone!"
One beat of silence. Then a scornful laugh.
"A bomb? A kidnapping?"
Alessandro's tone dripped with the kind of arrogance that only absolute power could breed.
"Madelyn, these little stunts for attention are getting embarrassing. The West District is under my control. Who would dare touch the Don's wife there?"
"It's real! Vernon's lost his mind! Owen's having an asthma attack—he doesn't have his inhaler—he can barely breathe!"
I stared at Owen's purple lips, tears pouring down my face. "Alessandro, I swear on my life I'm not lying! Listen—just listen!"
I desperately angled the phone toward Owen, trying to make Alessandro hear that deadly ticking.
That's when a soft, trembling woman's voice came through the line.
"Alessandro... Bella still won't eat anything. The thunder scared her so badly, she won't stop shaking... Do you think—do you think she hates me?"
Vivian. The daughter of Alessandro's late benefactor. A woman who was perpetually fragile, perpetually innocent, and perpetually stealing the air I needed to breathe.
"Hey, hey—none of that, cara." Alessandro's voice transformed instantly into something unbearably tender.
"Bella's just stressed, that's all. I already have the best vet in the city on the way."
The words hit me like a physical blow. Every drop of blood drained from my body.
"Alessandro..." My voice came out small, broken, pathetic—and I hated myself for it.
"Owen's life is in your hands... he's your flesh and blood. Can you just—please—just send one helicopter..."
"Enough!" The warmth vanished. His voice was ice again.
"Madelyn, I'm busy. Vivian's cat may be dying. She's already a wreck, and you want to pile your lies on top of that?"
"Lies? My son has a bomb strapped to his chest and you're calling it lies?!" I shrieked.
"If you hadn't taught Owen to fake sick every other week, maybe he wouldn't be such a liar himself." His voice was flat. Final. A sentence delivered without appeal.
"If you're that bored, sign him up for some etiquette class. Don't call again."
The flat drone of the dead line merged with the bomb's ticking, slicing through me.
I stared at the darkened screen. His words kept replaying, over and over, like a knife turning in an open wound.
Vivian's cat was scared of thunder—so every vet in the city had to be on standby.
My son had C-4 strapped to his chest—and I was making it up for attention.
"Mommy..." Owen's weak voice pulled me back.
His eyes were squeezed shut, his small chest heaving, each breath dragging out of him with a terrible rattling wheeze.
"Looks like the great Don Dante thinks you and your boy aren't worth as much as a fucking cat." Vernon stepped forward and crushed the phone under his boot, his eyes gleaming with deranged satisfaction.
"How does it feel, Madelyn? Being thrown away like that?"
I didn't give him the satisfaction of a response. The terror and the instinct—the raw, animal need to protect my child—crushed everything else flat.
The humiliation, the betrayal—none of it mattered now.
Alessandro wouldn't save us. I had to save Owen myself.
And I could. I was Black Swan—once the deadliest assassin the underworld had ever known. I would not die in this godforsaken place.
"Vernon. Name your price." I forced my voice steady, locked my eyes on his.
"Whatever Alessandro won't give you, I will. Let Owen go. Everything I have—accounts, properties, all of it. Enough to keep you comfortable for ten lifetimes."
Vernon stared back at me. Said nothing. Just pointed at the display on the bomb.

Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.

"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."
