Company Retreat: I Disarmed Four Bombs in the Banquet Hall
August · Completed · 11.7k Words
Introduction
Three years ago, I walked away. I took a desk job at a consulting firm, spending my days sorting files and filling spreadsheets.
To everyone else, I was an easy mark. The project lead mocked me in meetings, stole credit, and dumped every mistake on my head—always in public.
Then came the department banquet.
My enemies showed up.
The same lead who’d been riding me all year ignored my warning and blocked the hallway, drawing a crowd.
The next second, the bomb went off—and the banquet hall was sealed.
That’s when everyone finally understood who the quiet office clerk really was.
Chapter 1
I’m a cleaner—the kind hired to make problems disappear: eliminate targets, wipe scenes, erase evidence.
————
I sat on the edge of the banquet hall, killing time by folding paper with a stack of napkins within reach.
I pressed the creases flat, lined up the corners, and finally popped open the belly of a little paper boat. It meant nothing, really—just something to keep my hands busy so I wouldn’t die of boredom. I’ve never been big on social events.
My coworkers were drinking hard. The chanting and heckling rose in waves, and the clink of glasses bounced around inside the music. A few people crowded the bar, yelling for the bartender to do another round. Others took advantage of the good lighting to drag colleagues into selfies.
It was a department party, held on the second floor of the main building in a three-story country manor outside the city. The banquet hall had a high ceiling, and warm light from the ceiling strips softened everyone’s faces.
Maybe because we were so far from town, the reception out here was spotty—on and off—so folding napkins was about as entertaining as it got.
My eyes swept over the two exits as I mapped the layout in my head. The hall had two doors: the main entrance led into the manor’s interior, opening onto an inner corridor; the glass door on the other side led straight to an outdoor terrace, where the night air hit you and a fire-escape staircase ran down to the grounds.
The inner corridor wasn’t long. Walk a few steps in and you’d see the elevator facing the hallway, servicing all three floors. To the right, at the far end, was the stairwell. To the left, at the far end, were the restrooms.
Hired security moved near the doors—uniforms, earpieces, ID badges pinned to their chests. Their patrol pattern was fixed: one at the main door, one at the terrace door, and two more spaced apart near the bar, eyes sweeping constantly.
A company party didn’t usually need security this tight, but Sterling Consulting loved talking about “risk control.” Making a show of it fit their style.
Yes—Sterling Consulting. That was my employer.
On paper, the company did corporate risk and compliance consulting: risk assessments, compliance recommendations, contingency planning. If you dug a little deeper, they also coordinated contracted security, event protection, and incident response.
My job inside the company was as forgettable as it gets—administration, project support. I organized documents, updated spreadsheets, chased approvals. Anyone could do what I did.
The job didn’t matter to me. I only needed somewhere to show up on time and leave on time, a routine that made life feel orderly.
Because I’d retired three years ago.
Before retirement, I was a cleaner. Codename: Night Owl.
That line of work didn’t require meeting minutes, and it didn’t require raising a glass at office parties. It required dealing with things that “needed to be dealt with”: taking out targets, cleaning scenes, erasing evidence—making certain events look like they never happened.
Put more plainly, I cleaned up other people’s dirty work. I’d seen enough in those years that when I finally stopped, I didn’t know how to live like a normal person anymore.
My therapist suggested I get a stable, boring job—something with a fixed rhythm to structure my days.
I took the advice. Last year, I joined Sterling Consulting and started practicing being normal.
Tonight’s department party was supposed to be part of that normal life.
“Noah.”
Someone called my name. I didn’t look up right away. I pressed the bow of the paper boat down one more time, then lifted my eyes.
Blake Hall walked over with a drink, two or three coworkers trailing behind him. He wore that easy, familiar smile—like wherever he stood automatically became the center of the room.
Blake was a project lead. He knew how to talk in public, and he knew how to make people uncomfortable in public. He especially liked picking on anyone who didn’t argue back.
Over the past year, he’d come at me plenty of times: using me as a negative example in meetings, skipping my contributions in project wrap-ups, and when something went wrong, tossing the blame my way—loudly, in front of everyone.
Tonight, he clearly wasn’t planning to stop.
“What are you doing over here?” Blake glanced at the little napkin boat in my hands, his smile widening. “Folding that? Kind of adorable. You’ve been here a year, right? And this is what you’ve learned?”
Someone nearby laughed. Not loud, but sharp enough to sting.
I didn’t laugh with them, and I didn’t push back. I set the napkin boat on the table and took a sip of my drink, giving myself a second to breathe.
Blake kept going, faster now. “Seriously—what projects have you even done this year? When I report to leadership, I don’t know how I’m supposed to mention you.”
A few more heads turned. Attention drifted in our direction.
That kind of light, casual doubt is the worst thing in an office. It isn’t harsh enough to justify a scene, but it’s enough to stick a label on you.
I kept my tone even, making sure I sounded like I was talking about work—not competing with him. “My role is documentation and process follow-up. It’s not very visible. If you need something, I fill the gap. As long as the project doesn’t get delayed, that’s the point.”
I didn’t want a direct confrontation with Blake at a party. It would only make the room uglier—and it would make more people remember me.
Blake found my answer boring. He changed angles. “Then why are you even here? Just to make up the headcount? Or to remind us that people ‘off the front line’ can still scrape by?”
I set my glass down and forced a thin smile, still calm. “I’m here to eat, show my face. Don’t turn tonight into a performance review.”
Blake stared at me, like he was trying to find a crack in my expression. I didn’t give him one.
He huffed a laugh, judging my lack of reaction. “Fine. Same old you. Just don’t go hide in the bathroom playing on your phone again.”
Then he turned away, taking his little group back into the center of the crowd to keep working the room and making rounds with his drink.
I let out a slow breath and checked my phone.
No signal. Nothing at all.
I set the paper boat down and reached for another napkin. My fingertip brushed a spot that felt slightly stiff, like someone had pressed hard with a pen.
I flipped it over and saw a single line of writing.
No code. No flourish. Just blunt, direct words:
Night Owl. Someone is looking for you. There are four bombs in the banquet hall. If they don’t find you by midnight, they’ll go off. Stay hidden.
I didn’t look up. I didn’t hold the napkin up to read it again.
I kept folding, hiding the line of ink in my palm, and let my eyes sweep the room as if I were simply searching for a drink, a friend, an exit.
The banquet hall was still loud. The music kept playing. People kept laughing. Blake was still raising his glass.
The hired security hadn’t moved. The wires of their earpieces hugged their skin like thin snakes.
No one was watching me—at least, not on the surface.
I folded the napkin into a paper airplane, slipped it into my pocket, took a sip from my glass, and picked up another napkin as if nothing had changed.
I didn’t know who had sent me the warning. I didn’t even know whether that person was still in the room.
To everyone else, I was still the quiet office guy Blake had been stepping on for a year—the one who never talked back, the one playing with pointless little crafts.
Only I knew the truth: the moment I read that napkin, the party was over.
What I had to do next was simple—find the four devices and disable them, without alerting anyone.

When fate places Andrew Thompson, the son of his greatest rival, into his hands, the plan was simple: use him, break him, and discard him like a toy that has lost its appeal.

He thinks I'm weak. That I'll stand by his side in two days, smile for the ceremony, and hand him my loyalty with the Alpha title.

They'll remember the woman who took his crown...
