He Got Engaged Upstairs. I Disappeared Downstairs
Hachimitsu · Ongoing · 14.2k Words
Introduction
A man's photograph lay on top.
Thirty-four. Single. A steady career, a home of his own, no complicated family obligations.
It was more thorough than a dating profile.
Nathan sat across from me, as calm as if we were making dinner plans.
“Evan Brooks is heading back to Charlotte next week. He's interested in getting to know you. His rehab center is hiring, too. You used to work in speech therapy. You could have a job and a place to settle down.”
I left the file untouched and picked up the divorce papers.

When Nathan Hayes set the divorce settlement in front of me, he placed another file beside it.
A man's photograph lay on top. Thirty-four. Single. A steady career, a home of his own, no complicated family obligations. The information went well beyond a dating profile.
Nathan sat across from me, speaking as casually as if he were planning dinner.
“Evan Brooks is heading back to Charlotte next week. He's interested in getting to know you. His rehab center needs staff, too. You used to work in speech therapy. Once you're there, you could get your work and your life settled.”
I didn't touch Evan's file. I picked up the divorce settlement instead.
We'd been married for seven years. We had no children. Nathan had owned the house before we married, and we were splitting our marital savings equally. He was also offering me two condos and enough money to support an ordinary person for years.
There was nothing objectionable in the settlement. It was generous, even.
I took a pen and turned to the last page.
Nathan watched my hand. “Claire Bennett, you can take a few more days to think. Olivia isn't moving back until the end of the month. There's no rush to finish this.”
At the sound of Olivia Grant's name, I stopped with the pen poised over the paper.
Seven years earlier, Nathan's father had died suddenly. Problems at the company had followed one after another. That was when Olivia had accepted a job overseas and broken up with him.
For a long time, Nathan could barely sleep. At his worst, being in an enclosed space left him struggling to breathe.
I went to his appointments with him and organized his daily medication. For three straight months, I stayed until he fell asleep before leaving.
My family was struggling then, too. My mother had been diagnosed with a serious illness, and the treatment costs were more than we could manage.
Nathan's mother lent us the money. She also asked whether I would consider marrying her son.
“He needs someone he knows and can trust beside him,” she said.
I agreed. Not because of the money. I'd been in love with him since college.
He didn't touch me on our wedding night. Sitting on the edge of the bed, he made me a solemn promise.
“We rushed into this. But I'll take care of you.”
In many ways, he did. When I was sick, he had a doctor come to the house. When my family tried to make me pay my older brother's debts, he stopped them. When someone made a joke about my background, he defended me in public.
After seven peaceful years, I had begun to believe that sharing a life could matter more than an old love.
Then Olivia came back to the United States.
Nathan picked her up at the airport himself. It was our wedding anniversary.
I waited at the restaurant until closing. All I got was a text.
“Olivia isn't feeling well. I won't be home tonight.”
Three months after her return, he asked for a divorce. By the time he brought me these final papers, the court process was already nearing its end.
I didn't ask whether he loved me anymore. His answer was right in front of me.
I lowered the pen and signed my name wherever it was required.
Instead of looking relieved, Nathan frowned.
“Aren't you going to ask why Olivia came back?”
“It doesn't matter.”
“She didn't leave because she stopped loving me.” He explained anyway. “Her father was very ill. She had to take the job overseas. He's passed away now, and she's finished working there.”
I closed the document. “So the two of you can finally start over.”
“Yes.”
He didn't try to deny it. After a pause, he pushed Evan's file toward me again.
“I want you to start over, too, Claire. Evan and I went to college together. He's a good man. Haven't you wanted to work at a rehab center again? He can help you with that.”
I looked up. “I've met Evan twice. At your parties.”
“You can get to know each other.”
“Like we did?”
His expression stiffened.
I slid the file back. “I'll agree to the divorce. I won't date Evan, and I won't move there for a job you've picked out for me.”
“He really liked you.”
“That's his business.”
“Your parents have already spoken to his.”
For a couple of seconds, I couldn't answer.
“You told my parents about this?”
Nathan seemed to see nothing wrong with it. “Your father thinks it's a good idea. Evan lives in Charlotte. If you move there, you won't have to stay in Boston and listen to people gossip.”
My husband wasn't simply leaving me. He'd already chosen my next city, my next job, and my next partner.
“Nathan.” I looked straight at him. “Are you trying to make this up to me, or get me out of the way?”
He frowned harder. “I'm not throwing you out.”
“What if I stay here and remain single?”
“You won't.” He sounded utterly certain. “You're used to being taken care of. Family matters to you. Evan would be better for you than I am.”
I gave a small, disbelieving laugh.
Seven years of marriage, and he thought I was the one being taken care of.
Who remembered where his stomach medication was? Who stayed up with him until dawn when he couldn't sleep? Who dealt with the tension between him and his mother? He'd grown so used to all of it that he no longer noticed the effort.
I took my wedding ring out of the drawer and set it beside the papers.
“Please cancel the setup with Evan.”
“He flies back into the country the day after tomorrow.” Nathan's voice hardened. “At least meet him.”
“No.”
“Do you think I'll change my mind if you refuse to see anyone else?”
For a moment, I didn't understand. Then I did.
He thought I was rejecting Evan because I couldn't let him go.
“Don't worry.” I turned off the location sharing we'd used as a family. “I'm not going to threaten to stay single forever to make you feel guilty.”
“Then why refuse?”
“Because I don't have feelings for him. And because, after leaving you, I want some time to take back my own life.”
Nathan was quiet for a moment.
“Give it seven days. Evan will be at the dinner our families have arranged. If you still say no then, I won't push you.”
I watched him. “Day seven is also your engagement party with Olivia.”
For an instant, he looked uncomfortable.
The two events were scheduled for the same day. In the same hotel.
Upstairs, Nathan and Olivia would celebrate their engagement. Downstairs, my family would introduce me to the man they'd chosen for me.
He probably thought it was perfect. We'd both step into new lives on the same day, with nothing left to owe each other.
“All right.” I put the divorce papers away. “You'll have my answer on day seven.”
Nathan stood and headed for the door. I stopped him one last time.
“What if my answer is still no?”
He looked back. “Then it ends. No one will pressure you again.”
I nodded. “Remember you said that.”
After the door closed, I picked up Evan's file. Beneath it was a referral form for the Charlotte rehab center.
Nathan had signed as my reference. He'd even filled in the recommendation.
“Easygoing, attentive to others' needs, and well suited to a stable, long-term caregiving role.”
I stared at the words “attentive to others' needs.”
Apparently, all he knew about me was who I might be useful to next.

The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife
Letters to a Dark Prince
Thrown into Isteros Academy—a world of old money, blood money, and cruel social games—she's an outsider by birth and an afterthought by design. Her sister Solyn is the school's untouchable queen and Mara is her favorite target.
Everyone expects Atreus to treat his fiancée’s scholarship sister like everyone else does—as if she doesn’t matter.
Instead, his dorm room sits directly across from hers, close enough that she can see his light go out at night. Some nights, he climbs the old maintenance trellis just to check on her. He teaches her chess. He shows up exactly when something's gone wrong—and never once asks to be thanked for it.
"Don't fall in love with one piece," he warns her, over a board neither of them treats like a game anymore. "It punishes the person who only sees half of it."
Mara doesn't understand why the boy who's supposed to make her life harder keeps quietly making it easier—not until she realizes the anonymous stranger she's been writing to every week already has a name.
His.
He doesn't know he's writing to her, either.
By the time they find out, it's too late to stop what's already happening. Far too dangerous for anyone to find out.
In an empty studio, in the middle of a rainstorm, she asks him: 'Am I the kind of girl who kisses a boy engaged to my sister?'
He doesn't answer.
So she asks: 'What are we?’
He told her not to fall in love with one piece.
She fell anyway.
And he was never far behind.

She endured his cold indifference, raised their son—who struggles with a speech impediment—in silence, and traded her own brilliant career for the thankless role of a trophy wife.
But when his long-lost love returns, she is unceremoniously pushed aside to make room for the "real" family.
Enough was enough.
After he publicly humiliates her and chooses the mistress’s daughter over his own son during a birthday party, something inside her finally snaps. She doesn't just want out of the marriage; she wants her life back. With a secret talent for design and a newfound resolve, she walks away from the gilded cage of his estate.
But as she rises from the ashes of her failed marriage to reclaim her status as a top-tier designer, he realizes the woman he treated as a disposable pawn was the only one who truly held his world together.
Now, the woman who once begged for his attention is no longer looking back. Will he be able to earn her forgiveness, or is he finally too late?
Tango 2 the Alpha's Heart
My gaze snapped to his. He was smiling, causing my heart to skip a painful beat. Before I could respond, the music began, and my body instinctively reacted to the sweet melody.
I found myself molded to Lex's will, my feet irresistibly following the dance steps.
The crowd gasped as Lex pulled me into a more intimate position, his hands roaming over my body in a seductive manner.
The experience was both terrifying and magical, allowing me to feel every longing emotion through the dance.
I soon found myself lost in his arms.
When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.
The ballroom fell silent.
Was he about to kiss me?

The Family Books 1-3 (A Mafia romance)
The saint to my sinner. with her innocent eyes and devilish curves.
A Madonna that was meant to be admired but never touched.
Until someone took that innocence from her.
She left.
The darkness in my heart was finally complete.
I avenged her, I killed for her, but she never came back.
Until I saw her again. An angel dancing around a pole for money.
She didn’t know I owned that club. She didn’t know I was watching.
This time I won’t let her escape.
I will make her back into the girl I knew.
Whether she likes it or not.
2/ Judge and Jury- I can’t stop watching her.
I’m not even sure I want to.
Taylor Lawson, blonde, beautiful, and totally oblivious to how much dangers she’s in.
She’s also the one juror in my upcoming murder trial that hasn’t been bought.
The one who can put me behind bars for a very long time.
I know I should execute her.
After all that’s what I do.
I am the Judge.
I eliminate threats to The Family.
And Taylor is a threat.
But I don’t want to kill her.
Possessing her, making her love me seems like a much better plan for this particular Juror.
3/ Rags and Ritches-
Love's Deadly Equation
I was sent to her.
To watch her. To protect her. And, when the order comes… to kill her.
My name is Keegan Caffery. I’m the Carter Mafia’s best hitman. I don’t miss. I don’t fail.
At least, I didn’t use to.
I don’t know what it is about her that got to me first—her mouth, her mind, or the way she looks at me like I’m not what she should fear.
I’ve had a gun to her head since I walked into her life.
She knows it.
And she still doesn’t run.
She just watches me back like she’s studying a problem she refuses to call impossible.
She’s the one variable I can’t control.
And God help me… I don’t want to.
I have an order. I have loyalty. I have a trigger.
But every time I imagine it—
I can’t stand it.
Her or me. That’s the math.
It’s a deadly equation I don’t want to solve.
⬥ Maisie ⬥
I’m not ordinary. I stopped pretending long ago.
My name is Maisie Seo. IQ 145. Clinical genius.
Which sounds impressive until you realize what it actually means: I don’t fit anywhere people expect me to.
I see patterns everywhere. Outcomes before they happen. People like equations I’ve already solved.
It gets lonely in a world you’ve already figured out.
So I dull myself down. Smoke the edges off. Pretend, badly, to be the kind of normal that lets people stay.
Then he walked in.
I knew what he was immediately. Dangerous. Intentional. Wrong in all the right ways.
I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
Instead, I’m fascinated.
Because for the first time in my life… I’ve found something I can’t solve.
He is my deadly equation.
Taste of Fate: The Vampire King's Human Mate
He reached for the back of my head and pulled me up just enough to reach my neck. When his fangs slid into me, the pain was instant, electric. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. My hands found his shoulders, clawing for something to hold. My legs kicked. Tears streamed down my cheeks.
He moaned against my throat as he drank, and the sound was devastating.
Let Them Kneel
Cast out by her pack. Forgotten by the Lycans.
She lived among humans—quiet, invisible, tucked away in a town no one looked at twice.
But when her first heat comes without warning, everything changes.
Her body ignites. Her instincts scream. And something primal stirs beneath her skin—
summoning a big, bad Alpha who knows exactly how to quench her fire.
When he claims her, it’s ecstasy and ruin.
For the first time, she believes she’s been accepted.
Seen.
Chosen.
Until he leaves her the next morning—
like a secret never to be spoken.
But Kaelani is not what they thought.
Not wolfless. Not weak.
There is something ancient inside her. Something powerful. And it’s waking.
And when it does—
they’ll all remember the girl they tried to erase.
Especially him.
She’ll be the dream he keeps chasing… the one thing that ever made him feel alive.
Because secrets never stay buried.
And neither do dreams.
