I Don't Want My Husband or Son Anymore

For the sake of my marriage, I turned down a promotion and became the perfect wife and mother.

When my six-year-old son was rushed to the ER with an asthma attack in the dead of night, I sat vigil until dawn.

What I didn't expect was to hear my husband, just outside the emergency room doors, bragging to a friend about his mistress — and sneering that I was "bland and boring."

What hurt worse: my own son had been bought off by the other woman, and was now faking illness with practiced ease to cover for his father's affair.

My husband's scheming, my son's betrayal — seven years of devotion, ground into the dirt.

In that moment, something inside me died for good.

 Chapter One

It was the third time this month that Noah had been rushed to the ER in the middle of the night for a "sudden asthma attack."

"Mommy, will you stay with me the whole time?"

Six-year-old Noah asked me from the hospital bed.

A wave of tenderness welled up in me. I bent down and kissed his forehead.

"Of course I will, sweetheart."

I tucked his hand back under the blanket. "Close your eyes and rest. Mommy's just going to the corridor to grab a hot coffee. I'll be right back."

Noah nodded obediently.

I slipped quietly out of the room. At 1:40 a.m., the hospital corridors were dead silent.

And then, passing a half-open fire door, I heard my husband Ethan's voice.

And his good-for-nothing friend, Mark.

"Here's what you asked for, man. I ran all over town to get it before the counter closed."

Mark's tone was thick with amusement. "You're something else. Buying two identical brand-name gifts — one for your wife, one for your mistress — right down to the same black velvet box. That's a level of commitment."

"Thanks, Mark." Ethan let out a light laugh, and there was something in it I almost never heard from him — the lazy drawl of a man who plays the field.

"Though honestly, you're laying it on thick. The unengraved, bottom-tier plain band to fob off your wife; and the one with the pink diamond, rush-engraved on the inner band with 'E&M Forever' — that's for Maya?"

My feet nailed themselves to the floor. My heart seemed to stop dead in that instant.

Who the hell was Maya?

Behind the fire door, Ethan gave a low laugh.

"What can I say? Maya's a wildcat. She's on fire in bed."

He exhaled a mouthful of smoke. "My right shoulder is covered in bite marks from her going crazy on me. Broke the skin in a couple of places — I can't go out without a turtleneck these days."

"What, Bella can't keep up?" Mark teased.

"Bella?" Ethan snorted, and the disdain in it was undisguised. "She's a competent mother. But in bed? Bland. Boring."

"Too prim, too proper. Same three reactions, every single time. Maya's different — the things she does to me, Bella couldn't manage in a hundred years. Besides, this little influencer's got a temper on her. If I don't show up tonight with that custom diamond ring to smooth her over, she'll march into my office and make a scene."

"So you've got your son faking sick to keep Bella occupied?" Mark laughed out loud.

"That was his idea, actually. He wanted to help. Maya bought the kid a limited-edition LEGO set and now he thinks Auntie Maya's the best thing since sliced bread." Ethan's voice had gone breezy and pleased with itself.

BOOM.

It was as if a bomb went off inside my skull. A violent ringing in my ears swallowed every other sound.

A hot, physical wave of nausea and tearing pain surged up my throat. My stomach heaved.

Maya was the woman my husband was cheating with.

And my son Noah was their accomplice.

How had it come to this?

Fragments of us flashed through my mind.

Seven years ago, in that leaking rental apartment, his eyes had gone red and he'd said: "Bella, you're the only one for me. I'll love you forever."

Five years ago, holding one-year-old Noah, he'd said: "We're the happiest family in the world."

Two years ago, at the kindergarten gate, Noah had clung to my leg with tears in his eyes and told me he loved Mommy most, that he didn't want to be apart from me.

And now Ethan was calling me bland and boring. And Noah was helping another woman lie to me.

The tears came without warning. My shoulders shook so hard I couldn't stop them. The pain in my stomach nearly dropped me to my knees on the floor.

"Alright, hand over the two boxes. Maya's waiting on me."

Inside the door came the rustle of fabric as Ethan straightened his clothes. His voice had settled back into its usual steadiness. "I need to go to the room first and give this plain band to Bella."

In that extremity of pain, my mind was a tangled mess. I didn't know what to do. All I could do was hurry back to the room.
