I Gave Him a Future Without Me
Lyric Ross · Ongoing · 9.2k Words
Introduction
Ethan Walker used to promise he'd wait for me. We'd been best friends since we were four.
Then Madison Reed came along, and he stopped keeping that promise.
At dinner, they'd leave before I finished eating. At the beach, they disappeared while I was still struggling to swim back to shore.
I kept making excuses for him.
Until the night I arrived late to a party and heard one of his friends ask, "Where's Alice? Thought she was coming with you."
Ethan let out an annoyed sigh.
"She's probably still getting ready. You know how slow she is."
"Why didn't you wait?"
"Because it's exhausting. Everything takes twice as long with her around. I'm not spending my whole life waiting for her."
I stood outside the door, unable to move.
I'd spent years trying to catch up to him.
I never realized he'd been counting the minutes until he could leave me behind.
Ethan and Madison had been planning to attend UCLA together for months. They'd already made it clear that they expected me to go with them, too.
He assumed I'd follow, just like always.
But I quietly accepted my offer from the University of Washington instead.
Ethan was right about one thing.
He shouldn't have to spend his life waiting for me.
So this time, I chose Seattle.
And I gave him a future without me.
Chapter 1
I've always been a little slower than everyone else.
And I gave him a future without me.
...
I confirmed my enrollment at the University of Washington with forty-three seconds to spare.
Seattle.
Nearly twelve hundred miles from Ethan Walker.
My chest tightened as the confirmation appeared on my laptop.
I'd spent twelve years believing we'd always be together. Now, for the first time, I was going somewhere he wouldn't be.
My phone rang.
Ethan.
"Alice, are you ready yet? Prom starts at seven."
I glanced at the clock.
It wasn't even six.
"You said you'd pick me up at six-thirty."
"Yeah, well, Madison's coming with us. She doesn't have a date, and I don't want her showing up alone. Can you hurry?"
"I just need a few more minutes."
He sighed. "Of course you do. Just try not to take forever, okay?"
The call ended.
I hurried to finish getting ready.
My pale blue dress hung a little loose around my waist. I'd spent weeks saving up for it, imagining Ethan's face when he saw me.
But the dress wasn't what I'd worked hardest on.
For the past month, I'd been practicing dancing.
Every afternoon, I stayed behind in the school gym, following online tutorials until my feet ached.
Ethan loved dancing. He was naturally good at it, just like he was at everything else.
I wasn't.
But tonight, I wanted to dance with him without making him slow down.
At 6:12, I stepped outside.
His car was gone.
My phone buzzed with a text.
Ethan: Madison was getting anxious about being late. We went ahead. Just get an Uber.
I stared at the message. He'd left eighteen minutes before the time he'd promised to pick me up.
I hadn't even been late.
By the time I reached the hotel ballroom, the music was already playing.
I found Ethan near the dance floor.
Madison stood beside him in a silver dress, her hand tucked into his arm.
"Ethan?"
He turned. "Oh, hey. You made it."
My fingers tightened around my clutch.
"You said we'd dance together tonight."
Before he could answer, Madison touched his shoulder.
"Actually, Alice, I asked Ethan to be my date. I didn't have anyone else to go with."
Ethan shrugged.
"Come on, Alice. You don't even like dancing."
"I never said that."
"Well, you can barely keep up when we're walking. Dancing's not exactly your thing."
Madison laughed softly. "I promise I'll give him back after a song."
But one song became three. Then five.
I sat at a table near the wall, watching Ethan spin Madison beneath the lights. She moved effortlessly in his arms.
I looked down at my shoes. The same shoes I'd worn every afternoon while practicing.
I'd learned the steps. Every turn, every count.
I'd even practiced smiling so he wouldn't notice how hard I was concentrating.
All because I'd wanted one dance with him.
Ethan never came to ask.
By the time the last slow song ended, my feet were still perfectly comfortable. I'd barely moved all night.
Afterward, a group of us gathered around a table in the hotel lounge.
Madison dropped into the seat beside Ethan, breathless and laughing.
"Best prom ever."
Ethan grinned at her. "You're welcome."
I took the chair on his other side.
Ryan, our class president, glanced between us.
"Man, you three have been attached at the hip since freshman year. You're seriously gonna keep that going in college?"
I straightened.
This was my chance.
I could finally tell them I wasn't going to UCLA.
That I'd chosen Washington instead.
But before I could speak, Ethan threw an arm around Madison's shoulders and draped the other across mine.
"Obviously."
A few of our friends laughed.
Ethan gave my shoulder a squeeze.
"Come on, you think Alice could survive college without us?"
"She's slow at everything, gets lost in places she's been a hundred times, and lets people walk all over her."
"Ethan," I murmured.
"What?" He glanced at me. "You know it's true."
Then his voice softened.
"Besides, who's gonna look out for her if we're not there? People aren't always nice, Alice. You need someone in your corner."
His arm was warm against my shoulders.
So familiar it almost hurt.
I thought of the little boy who used to hold my hand and promise he'd never leave me behind.
Maybe he still cared.
Maybe, underneath all the impatience, he still remembered that I needed him.
And just like that, the hope I'd spent all evening trying to bury flickered back to life.

This could not be real.

MOONLIT CHASE
But no, I had to walk through the park at midnight like an idiot. Now I've seen something I can't unsee—a massive black wolf tearing apart three men, then shifting into the hottest guy I've ever laid eyes on.
Kieran Vaughn. Wealthy lawyer, werewolf, and apparently, he thinks I'm his mate.
Here's the problem: I don't do relationships. I definitely don't do supernatural things. I absolutely don't do rich guys who think they can control my life just because their inner wolf has decided I smell like home.
When hunters start targeting me to get to him, Kieran drags me into his pristine penthouse for "protection." Now I'm living with a man who looks at me like I'm his last meal, whose touch sets my skin on fire, and who's barely holding onto his control.
He says everyone he loves dies. I say that's not my problem except it is because I'm falling for this broken, dangerous man and his beast.
And in his world? Love will get you killed.
Love's Deadly Equation
I was sent to her.
To watch her. To protect her. And, when the order comes… to kill her.
My name is Keegan Caffery. I’m the Carter Mafia’s best hitman. I don’t miss. I don’t fail.
At least, I didn’t use to.
I don’t know what it is about her that got to me first—her mouth, her mind, or the way she looks at me like I’m not what she should fear.
I’ve had a gun to her head since I walked into her life.
She knows it.
And she still doesn’t run.
She just watches me back like she’s studying a problem she refuses to call impossible.
She’s the one variable I can’t control.
And God help me… I don’t want to.
I have an order. I have loyalty. I have a trigger.
But every time I imagine it—
I can’t stand it.
Her or me. That’s the math.
It’s a deadly equation I don’t want to solve.
⬥ Maisie ⬥
I’m not ordinary. I stopped pretending long ago.
My name is Maisie Seo. IQ 145. Clinical genius.
Which sounds impressive until you realize what it actually means: I don’t fit anywhere people expect me to.
I see patterns everywhere. Outcomes before they happen. People like equations I’ve already solved.
It gets lonely in a world you’ve already figured out.
So I dull myself down. Smoke the edges off. Pretend, badly, to be the kind of normal that lets people stay.
Then he walked in.
I knew what he was immediately. Dangerous. Intentional. Wrong in all the right ways.
I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
Instead, I’m fascinated.
Because for the first time in my life… I’ve found something I can’t solve.
He is my deadly equation.
Let Them Kneel
Cast out by her pack. Forgotten by the Lycans.
She lived among humans—quiet, invisible, tucked away in a town no one looked at twice.
But when her first heat comes without warning, everything changes.
Her body ignites. Her instincts scream. And something primal stirs beneath her skin—
summoning a big, bad Alpha who knows exactly how to quench her fire.
When he claims her, it’s ecstasy and ruin.
For the first time, she believes she’s been accepted.
Seen.
Chosen.
Until he leaves her the next morning—
like a secret never to be spoken.
But Kaelani is not what they thought.
Not wolfless. Not weak.
There is something ancient inside her. Something powerful. And it’s waking.
And when it does—
they’ll all remember the girl they tried to erase.
Especially him.
She’ll be the dream he keeps chasing… the one thing that ever made him feel alive.
Because secrets never stay buried.
And neither do dreams.
Taste of Fate: The Vampire King's Human Mate
He reached for the back of my head and pulled me up just enough to reach my neck. When his fangs slid into me, the pain was instant, electric. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. My hands found his shoulders, clawing for something to hold. My legs kicked. Tears streamed down my cheeks.
He moaned against my throat as he drank, and the sound was devastating.
My Alpha's Fake Luna
Those were the last words my Alpha whispered before he severed our bond.
I believed our marriage was over.
I was wrong.
For two years, I thought Alpha Michael never loved me.
Every misunderstanding pushed us farther apart.
Every silence broke another piece of my heart.
While another woman slowly took my place.
But everything changed after the death of the Grand Alpha.
My mate began watching me.
Protecting me.
Holding me whenever I fell.
Looking at me like he was terrified of losing me.
If he hated me...
Why did he keep risking everything for me?
And why did everyone panic the moment I finally chose another future?
The rejected white luna

Inked Adonis - Mafia Romance
Of me saying I want to climb him like a tree.
And he just. Texted. Back.
It's the dog's fault, really.
If this untrained Great Dane I'm walking had any manners at all, I never would've ended up here:
With my leash wrapped around the most gorgeous man I've ever seen.
Lucky for me, the guy is a good sport about it.
(Although his joke that “Dogs take after their owners” hits a little too close to home when Rufus starts humping his leg.)
He leaves me with his business card and a smile that makes my knees weak.
I'm still pinching myself as me and the bestie resume our walk.
“Methinks you had a little crush on him,” she accuses.
Not thinking and a little flustered by the whole experience, I reply, “I’d wrap my legs around his waist tighter than that leash.”
THAT'S when she reveals that she'd been recording my response.
THAT'S when she gives me the most devilish grin I've ever seen and says, “You're welcome.”
And THAT'S when she hands me my phone and reveals...
She sent the recording to him.
My heart is in my throat as those three little dots appear…
Then a text.
“PROVE IT.”
