I Watched My Daughter Erase Her Father
Daisy Swift · Completed · 6.3k Words
Introduction
"Don't forget how Ellie got here in the first place. If you hadn't trapped me with a pregnancy, there wouldn't have been a wedding. So yes, goddamn it—I wish Sophie's boy was mine."
After that night, Ellie stopped asking for Adrian. She invited George to her preschool field day. She gave the Father's Day present she'd made to our bodyguard.
Then, one day, a business associate teased me about when I was going to give Ellie a younger sibling.
Ellie scrambled out of her playroom. "Mom, you should have it with Uncle Victor! I want a baby brother that belongs to you and Uncle Victor!."
The sharp crash of shattering porcelain echoed from the upstairs landing. Adrian stood there, pale, staring at the cake he'd dropped.
"I broke Ellie's cake," he said. "I'll go get another piece."
He turned and fled down the hallway, disappearing before either of us could say a word.
Chapter 1
The last time Adrian and I fought about Sophie Bennett, we didn't realize our daughter was standing right outside the door.
He turned and fled down the hallway, disappearing before either of us could say a word.
...
The first time I noticed how far Ellie had pulled away from Adrian was on her sixth birthday.
Five minutes before the party, Adrian still wasn't home. I called. No answer. I left a message instead.
"Today's Ellie's birthday. She invited her whole class. Adrian, you're her father. Please come. Whatever is happening between us, she hasn't done anything wrong. I'm begging you—at least show your face before the party ends."
When I lowered my phone, Ellie was standing in the doorway. Her eyes were red. She wore a pink princess dress with two ribbons at the sleeves, the sort she'd spent days choosing.
"He still doesn't have time for me?" she asked.
I made myself shake my head. "Of course he does. You're his daughter. He loves you. The hospital is just completely swamped today. There are sick kids who really need him in surgery right now. He'll be here as soon as he can."
At six, Ellie was harder to fool than she'd been at three. She didn't call me out. She took my hand and managed a smile.
"Then let's not wait for Dad. Come on, Mom. It's my birthday."
The party started without Adrian.
It wasn't until after Ellie was born that I realized Adrian had never truly moved on from his first love. We fought constantly, then stopped talking altogether. Adrian eventually grew exhausted from juggling me and Sophie, so when Ellie was almost three, he made his choice. Without telling us, he transferred to an overseas medical placement. He was gone for two whole years, having only recently returned to our lives.
And yet, the extravagant cake sitting in the center of the room had been entirely his idea.
He had custom-ordered it a month in advance: a towering fondant castle complete with a carriage, intricate flowers, woodland animals, and a tiny family of three. The design was brought to life from a fairy-tale world he and Ellie had sketched out together.
I had been at work the afternoon they planned it. When I came home, I found Ellie curled up warmly against his side, pointing excitedly at the paper as he drew in every little detail she asked for.
For a while, I let myself believe he meant to be part of our family again.
Ellie had looked forward to this party for weeks. The night before, she'd reminded Adrian again and again that he had to come. He'd heard her. That was why I kept glancing toward the door.
The moment the cake was brought out, the children immediately swarmed the table.
"Wow, Ellie! Is this the cake your dad designed?" a little girl gasped, pointing at the fondant figures. "Look, there's a princess, a doggie, and a king and a queen! But... where is your dad?"
Ellie pressed her lips together. There was a time when she had proudly brought Adrian's sketches in for show-and-tell, eager to brag about him. But now, she just stared down at the tiny fondant king, absolutely silent.
"Ellie's dad is a doctor," I chimed in smoothly to cover the silence. "He had to go to the hospital tonight to rescue some other boys and girls who aren't feeling well."
The distraction worked perfectly. One kid announced that doctors and cops were heroes like Iron Man, while another smugly bragged that his dad was a CEO who bossed everyone around. Soon, they were all happily talking over one another, competing over whose dad was the coolest. The interrogation was over, but Ellie simply wilted beside me.
I plastered on a bright smile to cut through the noise. "Okay! Who wants cake?"
As the birthday girl, Ellie got the first cut. I lifted her onto a stool so she could reach. For a moment she looked excited again. Then she hesitated, moved the knife, and knocked the blue-robed king clean off the cake.
The children gasped.
"Ellie?" I asked.
She turned back to the crowd, her sudden grin wide and unapologetic, as if her little prank had gone exactly as planned.
"We don't need a king!" she declared, her voice cutting through the chatter. "I don't want him on the cake anyway. I protect Mom, so I'm the hero!"
She threw her arms around my neck and kissed my cheek. "Mom is the king and the princess. She makes the money, she cooks, and she's the one who stays up with me when I'm sick. She does it all. What does Dad do?"
With both hands, she unceremoniously pushed Adrian's masterpiece out of the way. "Whatever. Mom made a chocolate cake too! It's hidden! Let's do a treasure hunt—whoever finds it gets a giant piece!"
She threw her arms out wide to prove the size, and the other kids instantly scattered out of the room to search.
One child hesitated, glancing down at the extravagant, discarded cake. "What about the one from your dad?"
Ellie was already pulling open the refrigerator. "Take it," she shrugged without missing a beat. "I don't want it anymore."
Amid the sudden storm of thumping footsteps and squealing kids, Adrian stood just inside the room. He had heard everything. He kept his eyes locked on his daughter, completely frozen, and when his gaze finally flickered up to mine, he looked absolutely gutted.

My Billionaire Husband's Secret
He was the CEO of the Blackwood Group — a man whose wealth and power eclipsed ninety-nine percent of the world.
He was gentle. Romantic. Attentive. I fell for him fast.
But a year into our marriage, I began to notice something — a pattern.
Lucas's sexual appetite was intense — he wanted me almost every night. Yet every single month, he arranged a solo trip to send me away. I told myself it was his way of spoiling me.
Then a message arrived from someone called Sweet An.
Do you really know your husband?
From that day on, my life filled with shadows.
I suspected my husband of having an affair.
When Lucas and I made love, something felt wrong — his body too large, too much, like something I couldn't explain.
I heard sounds during sex — animal sounds, like something feral had crawled into bed with us.
My best friend Mia said: "There are men sick enough to let dogs fuck their wives."
The family doctor, Daisy, told me: "You could never stay by Lucas's side forever. Your background doesn't make you worthy of being his wife. Do you understand?"
I went looking for whoever had been tearing my marriage apart. I fought to win my husband back.
But the deeper I searched, the larger the secret grew — something far darker hiding beneath this supposed betrayal.
Does Lucas truly love me?
And why, out of everyone in the world, did he choose to marry me?
