Introduction

When chaos faults the life of a certain control freak, subconsciousness begins to throw questions asking if the last twenty-three years were a waste or if moving forward was a trap bound to fall into.

Chapter 1

If there is one cardinal sin in the universe, it is disrespecting a synchronized schedule.

Zavia Thorpe checked her wristwatch for the seventh time in four minutes. The emerald secondhand ticked past 8:14 PM with mocking precision. According to the master timeline glowing softly on her phone screen, she and Thomas Pike—Tommy, to anyone unfortunate enough to tolerate his lack of punctuality—should currently be sharing an artisan flatbread at The Gilded Spoon, followed by an 8:45 PM arrival back at their shared cleaned apartment to review their weekend grocery list.

Instead, Zavia sat alone at a corner table meant for two, nursing a single glass of sparkling water because ordering a meal without him would throw off her caloric tracking, and glaring at the empty mahogany chair opposite her.

Her phone buzzed against the marble table. She snatched it up, her pulse spiking with a volatile mix of irritation and relief.

Tommy (8:15 PM): Babe so sorry. Stuck at the gym with the guys, traffic is mental. Give me 30 mins?

Zavia’s jaw locked so hard her back teeth ached. Stuck at the gym. Translation: he had lost track of time playing FIFA or chatting up some blonde receptionist, and her entire Thursday night framework was actively collapsing.

She tapped out a rigid reply: You are already forty-five minutes late. I have to call my mother at 9:00 PM, and I have a 7:30 AM review meeting with the M&A team tomorrow. If you aren't here in fifteen minutes, I am leaving.

She hit send, leaning back and releasing a slow, controlled breath through her nose. Her mother, Dorothy Thorpe, did not handle deviations from the script. Ever since Zavia could remember, the household had run like a Swiss train—meals at 6:00 PM sharp, clothes laid out the night before, and a weekly phone call every Thursday at precisely 9:00 PM.

Growing up with a mother whose OCD turned every hour into a battle against unseen chaos meant Zavia had learned early: control was safety. If you followed the plan, nothing bad could touch you.

Which begged the question—what on earth was she doing dating Tommy?

He was a human glitch in her system. He forgot anniversaries, left wet towels on her pristine hardwood floor, and treated her life plan like a series of inconveniences. Yet, she stayed. Not because she loved him—she was beginning to suspect love was just a marketing term invented by greeting card companies—but because breaking up with him meant untangling their lives, rewriting her budget, and admitting that another box on her life checklist was stamped failed. And failing terrified her more than being mildly miserable.

She looked at her watch: 8:22 PM.

If she left right now, she could make it home by 8:50 PM, wash her face, prep her work bag for tomorrow, and be sitting upright with a cup of chamomile tea exactly ten seconds before her mother's call came through.

Zavia grabbed her structured leather tote, slid a twenty-dollar bill under her water glass for the waiter, and stood up. As she stepped out onto the breezy, neon-lit downtown sidewalk, her phone buzzed again with a string of pathetic crying-emoji texts from Tommy. She muted him, her chest tightening with a strange, sharp spark of rebellion.

One minor detour taken. The world hadn't ended. Yet.

Across town, the bass inside Velour—a members-only subterranean lounge where the cocktails cost more than a weekly grocery budget—was vibrating straight through the floorboards and into the soles of Nicholas Wade’s custom-tailored leather shoes.

Nicholas didn’t mind the noise. In fact, after spending fourteen hours reigning over a brutal, high-stakes leveraged buyout that had the entire investment banking floor sweating through their silk ties, a little unadulterated chaos was a welcome palate cleanser.

"You look entirely too happy for a man who just legally acquired a mid-sized logistics empire," Chloe murmured, leaning against his shoulder. Her perfume smelled like expensive vanilla and expensive bad decisions, a combination Nicholas found thoroughly entertaining for a Thursday night.

Nicholas grinned, his dark eyes glinting under the amber club lights as he handed her a fresh glass of champagne. "Acquisitions are easy, Chloe. It’s the human element that keeps things interesting."

He was draped lazily across a velvet booth, a study in effortless, devastating polish. While the rest of Wall Street panicked over market volatility and shifting federal rates, Nicholas treated the chaos of finance like an extreme sport—you didn't fight the wave; you surfed it, looked good doing it, and laughed while you wiped out.

His phone buzzed on the table. A group chat text from his frantic younger sister, Stacy, demanding to know if he had remembered to RSVP to her gallery opening next month, flanked by a separate text from his Vice President warning of a potential hiccup with tomorrow morning's pitch deck.

Nicholas glanced at the screen, gave a low, amused huff, and tossed the phone face down.

"Everything okay?" Chloe asked, running a manicured fingernail down the lapel of his charcoal blazer.

"Never better," Nicholas laughed, the sound rich and easy.

He caught the eye of the bartender across the room, flashing a lazy, magnetic smile that had the man nodding instantly. "Come on. Let's get out of here. My place has a much better view of the city burning down."

"Eyes up here," he said.

My gaze snapped to his. He was smiling, causing my heart to skip a painful beat. Before I could respond, the music began, and my body instinctively reacted to the sweet melody.

I found myself molded to Lex's will, my feet irresistibly following the dance steps.

The crowd gasped as Lex pulled me into a more intimate position, his hands roaming over my body in a seductive manner.

The experience was both terrifying and magical, allowing me to feel every longing emotion through the dance.

I soon found myself lost in his arms.

When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.

The ballroom fell silent.

Was he about to kiss me?
