Chapter 1
Camila’s POV
The gentle whistle of the breeze embracing the harsh winter sent shivers down my spine as I clutched my scarf even tighter. Few people were in sight on the streets of New York City and I ducked a snowball before entering into a cafe.
“Good morning Monsieur Simone.” I greeted with a fake french accent.
A middle aged Frenchman turned around and flashed a smile at me. “Bonjour Camila, ça va?” He replied.
“I'm fine, I'll take the usual.” I replied.
“Oui, oui, bon appetit.” He responded then proceeded to give me my regular cup of coffee and hot croissants.
“Merci beaucoup!” I said as I stuffed my mouth with the croissant, savoring the taste.
I sat by the window, staring out then produced a newspaper from my pocket and a pencil. It was obvious that I was job hunting, no one would believe it if I told them given my background and identity but I really am.
My family was at the edge of bankruptcy and we were already swimming in debts, taking another loan would be suicidal. I heaved a sigh resignedly. ‘If only I could find a way.’ I muttered to myself.
My phone vibrated and I checked it, it was an incoming email, stating that I had been selected for an interview, a smile graced the corner of my lips and I quickly downed what's rest of my breakfast, paid for it before hurriedly downing what's left of my coffee and dashing out of the cafe.
I was excited to go home and show this to my Dad, he'd be proud of me. The house was just few blocks away so I hastened my steps, fifteen minutes later; I was home.
The gate was left ajar and the security man wasn't at his post, my heart skipped a beat and my breathing began to hitch. We still had the house though we were deep neck in debt, our mansion was practically the only luxury we had left.
“Levi! Levi!!” I called out but got no answer.
Panicking; I rushed into the house only to be met with chaos, shattered pieces of glass decorated the floor, tables were turned, vases and flower pots broken.
“Dad!” I called out, afraid something bad had happened to him.
“Let me go!” I heard a muffled cry coming from up the stairs and I quickly ascended thr staircase.
I halted as I saw some fierce looking men turning everything they could lay their hands on. Including my Dad who held on to a leg and was screaming.
“Get your filthy hands off my Dad!” I roared and charged at the rowdy that was hitting him without thinking.
I pushed the rowdy away with full force, causing him to stagger few steps backwards while I helped my Father get up.
“Are you okay Dad?” I asked, worriedly.
His eyes were full of fear and tears and he couldn't look at me.
“Who the hell are you people? How dare you barge into my house? I'll have you arrested immediately!” I threatened the men, killing them with my deadly stare.
The rowdy I pushed scoffed at me. “We'll be back in three days, you better get the goods ready.” He warned.
“How dare you try t-”
“Shut her up or we will!” The rowdy barked at me.
I scoffed and stood up to him. “Leave now or I'll make you regret it!” I thundered.
Dad staggered to his feet and held my hand, tugging at it. “let it be Camila.” He begged.
The men sneered at me and turned to leave but not without leaving a parting word. “Terenzio hopes you remember he's run out of patience.”
“Leave!” I yelled at their retreating figure.
Dad coughed and I turned my attention back to him. “Are you okay? Who were those men? Why were they attacking you?” I bombarded him with questions.
He coughed again, wincing in pain and I gently guided him back to his bedroom where I administered ointments to his bruises and gave him some painkillers. I had questions to ask but I chose to let them slide.
“Dad, who were those men? What's your connection with this Terenzio?” I asked as I fed him some soup.
“It's nothing, just some business partner of mine who doesn't believe that I've incurred a huge loss, he thinks I scammed him.” He explained.
I nodded my head, though I was still confused. “Why would you get involved with people like that? He sent thugs after you. If I didn't come in time, who knows what would have happened?”
He took my hand in his palm and gave it a gentle warm squeeze.
“I have it under control, trust me. I'm going to pay him back very soon, you know I'm trying my best to ensure we're back on our feet.” Dad assured me.
Dad chuckled. “Come here darling.” He beckoned one and I engulfed myself in his embrace. “I'll never let you down, okay?” He assured me.
I nodded and kissed his forehead. “Yes Papa.”
I remained in that position for a while and then left after he had gone to sleep. We could still afford to pay some of our maids do I ordered them to have the mess taken care of. That night, I dreamt of becoming the wealthiest woman alive and taking care of my Dad for forever.
The next morning, Dad wasn't awake yet when I was ready to leave so I instructed the maids to ensure he eats and takes his medications. I was fully dressed for the interview and ordered an Uber.
Since it was a multimillion international exchange company, they wouldn't bother much about my background. The pay was huge; about half a million monthly. I arrived at the venue, waited my turn and the interview was a success. They were impressed by my certification and unable to believe the only heiress of a millionaire would be talented since I majored in business management, sales and accounting.
My face beamed with smiles as I made my way back home, I was full of hope and life, now; everything would be fine. We would no longer struggle. The house was eeriely quiet when I stepped in but I waved it off since the maids worked hours and no longer stay with us.
“Dad!” I called out, excited to share the good news with him.
I skipped like a little excited girl to the kitchen, hoping he'd be there or at the living room where he'd normally sit to relax.
“Dad?” I blurted, shocked at what I was met by.
My dad was on his knees, his head hung low while some hefty men hovered above him. I recognize them as the men from the previous day.
“You bastards!” I cursed at them, threw my folder aside and swung the metallic bag I carried at them, hitting one of them on the head in the process. He yelped in the pain and the others were startled.
I crashed on the floor alongside him and held his arm. “Dad! dad are you okay?” I asked with urgency.
His eyes widened with shock. “What are you doing here Camila? Run away!” He urged me.
“What the hell do you all want with my dad?” I yelled, agitatedly.
One of the men grabbed me by my arm and yanked me away from him, dad crawled on all fours and held his leg. “Don't hurt my daughter please, don't hurt her.” He pleaded desperately.
I hissed and grabbed a knife from the fruit basket nearby and pointed it at them. “I'll kill you! You hear me?” I yelled.
“What do we have here? A fierce puppy?” A baritone voice resonated.

.
"I’m keeping her."
"What?"
Before I can react, he scoops her up. Her small body fits easily in the cradle of his talons. For a split second, she looks startled, but not afraid. Her hand rests against one scaled finger, and she stares up at him with that same curious wonder, as though she’s already forgotten she was ever meant to fear me.
"Put her down," I try to command, panic threading through my thoughts. "You’ll hurt her."
"She’s ours," the beast insists, possessive and fierce. "Our snowflake."
