My Death Countdown Hit Zero, So They Locked Me Away
Lily · Completed · 9.1k Words
Introduction
The first time I truly spoke, I was pointing at our neighbor, Emily.
She was flying a kite just outside our fence. Floating right above her head was a stark, blood-red number.
"Three."
My mom poked her head out of the kitchen, asking if I had just spoken.
I nodded and pointed at Emily again.
By the time they looked, the girl had already run off.
Three days later, Emily was struck and killed by a turning delivery truck at the corner of our street.
After the funeral, my parents held me tight and swore it was just a coincidence.
The second time was when my grandmother, Eleanor Hart, was hospitalized for a stroke.
Dr. Grant took off his glasses, his tone brutally calm. "She is in terrible shape. The family needs to prepare for the worst."
I stood at the end of the hallway. Above my grandmother's head, the number flickered like a slow-burning fire.
"Two hundred and forty."
Claire clamped her hand over my mouth.
Daniel went pale. He knelt down, his voice a harsh hiss. "Sophie, shut up! You cannot say things like that out loud."
Grandmother did not die that night.
After being brought home, she miraculously began to recover. She even spent her afternoons listening to the radio in the sun.
Until the two-hundred-and-fortieth day. She passed away in her sleep.
That was when my family finally understood exactly what my numbers meant.
Chapter 1
My name is Sophie Hart, and I barely spoke a word before I turned six.
The townsfolk said I was developmentally delayed. Behind our backs, they whispered that some foul thing had sealed my tongue.
The first time I truly spoke, I was pointing at our neighbor, Emily.
She was flying a kite just outside our fence. Floating right above her head was a stark, blood-red number.
"Three."
My father's coffee cup froze in mid-air.
My mother poked her head out of the kitchen, asking if I had just spoken.
I nodded and pointed at Emily again.

—
Claire hung thick blackout curtains. Daniel taught me to close my eyes and shut my mouth the second I saw anything.
"Do not bring trouble upon yourself," he told me. "And do not bring trouble into this house."
I promised.
Until my sixteenth birthday, when I looked in the bathroom mirror and saw the number hovering above my own head.
"730."
Exactly two years.
I stared at it. It felt like an unblinking eye that did not belong to me.
When I walked out of the bathroom and dropped the number on my parents, who were busy prepping for a weekend barbecue in the living room, the air instantly froze.
The plate in Claire's hands shattered on the floor.
My younger sister, Ella, two years my junior, sat on the rug, her voice laced with naive confusion. "Is Sophie going to die?"
"Ella! Shut up!" Claire snapped, before dropping to her knees and pulling Ella tightly into her arms.
That night, I heard them arguing in the kitchen.
Claire insisted on taking me to a doctor, but Daniel shot back, his voice heavy with exhaustion. "What is a doctor going to find? Are we supposed to tell them our daughter can see life-span countdowns?"
"So we just do nothing?"
Daniel fell silent for a long time before finally saying, "At least for these next two years... let us make sure she has a good life."
From that day forward, the rules of our household were completely rewritten.
The newest electronics always appeared on my desk first. My parents took only me on European holiday trips. They even gave up the master bedroom with the floor-to-ceiling windows, converting it into a private art studio just for me.
Meanwhile, Ella was left to drag her suitcase to our grandmother's house in the countryside every vacation.
Once, Ella stood in the entryway, her eyes red-rimmed. "I want to go to Paris with you guys too."
Claire crouched down and straightened the collar of Ella's coat. "Sophie does not have much time left. Let Mom and Dad spend this time with her."
Ella just looked at me. There was a grievance in her eyes that I could not quite decipher.
The two-year countdown ended on my eighteenth birthday.
There was no loud party with kids my age. Just a suffocatingly grim French dinner.
Daniel did something rare; he downed half a bottle of whiskey. Claire's eyes were swollen and red as she kissed my forehead through her tears.
I blew out the candles and did exactly as they told me: went to my room and closed my eyes.
The moment the door clicked shut, sobbing echoed from the other side.
I pressed a hand to my chest. My heartbeat was steady. Perfectly steady.
I opened my eyes, leaped out of bed, and threw the door open with a joyful smile. "I am not dead!"
Claire's expression froze.
Daniel sat paralyzed.
The crying in the living room stopped dead. Ella blinked, stunned for a second, then held out the newly released, limited-edition gaming console she had in her hands. "Here. You play it."
She had been yielding to me for two years. The gesture was pure muscle memory.
But this time, Claire's hand slammed down on the console, forcefully shoving it back into Ella's chest.
"Sophie, what is going on?"
"I do not know..."
I pointed at the space above my head in the hallway mirror. "It clearly hit zero."
"Sophie, can you really see those numbers?"
"Have you been lying to us this whole time..."
Daniel cut her off with a heavy sigh. "The 730th day is not over yet."
"We wait one more day. Until midnight tonight."
Claire said nothing, but her silence was a reluctant agreement.
The next day, they woke me up for meals as usual.
At dinner, Daniel sliced the tenderest piece of filet mignon and placed it on my plate. When Ella complained about me not doing chores, Claire reflexively scolded her.
But Ella kept tugging at Claire's sleeve, asking over and over, "Why hasn't Sophie left yet?"
"Just wait."
The whole family maintained the facade of favoring me.
But in their subtle movements, something had quietly, chillingly changed.
At 11:55 PM, the family stood vigil by my bed.
Daniel pulled the covers up to my chin. "Do not be afraid, Sophie."
Ella leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. "Goodbye," she spat, her face utterly expressionless.
"Sophie, we have not treated you poorly these past two years. Go in peace."
I nodded and closed my eyes.
The only sound left was the ticking of the minute hand.
The clock struck midnight. The inevitable never came.
Gripping the edge of the blanket, I cautiously opened my eyes.
The number above my head had changed to "-1."
Before I could even open my mouth to explain, a fierce gust of wind rushed at my face.
SMACK!
Claire's palm struck across my cheek with brutal force.
"I knew it! I knew you were lying, you little fraud!"
