Adrian Vale thought he had planned the perfect accident.

Instead, I escaped.

I was forty minutes from home when the truck hit me.
I had taken an earlier flight back from Seattle and told no one. Adrian thought I would be gone until Friday. I had spent the flight imagining his face when I walked into his office with the watch he had admired in a shop window and the pregnancy test I planned to take the moment I got home.
I didn't know I was pregnant yet. I only knew I was late, tired, and carrying a secret hope I was afraid to name.
Rain blurred the interstate outside Portland. The black SUV behind me had been there for twelve miles. When I changed lanes, it changed lanes. When I slowed, it dropped back.
Then a delivery truck came through the guardrail from the on-ramp and struck the driver's side of my car.
Metal folded around me. Glass burst across my lap. My car spun once, twice, and stopped with the front end buried in a ditch.
I couldn't move my left leg. Blood ran into my eye. Somewhere beyond the cracked windshield, men shouted over the rain.
I remember thinking Adrian would come.
He always came when I needed him. For three years, he had remembered every headache, every dinner I skipped, every cold morning when I left without gloves. People said Adrian Vale was ruthless, but with me he had been patient and careful. I had believed that meant I knew the man beneath the reputation.
An emergency responder pried open the passenger door. Another leaned over me and checked my pulse.
"She's alive. Pressure's falling. We need to move."
Tires skidded on wet pavement. A car door slammed.
"Where's Claire?"
Adrian's voice cut through the noise, sharp with urgency.
Relief hit so hard I almost cried. I tried to say his name, but my jaw wouldn't work.
His shoes appeared beside the ruined door. Expensive black leather, soaked at the edges. His hand touched my cheek.
"Get her to the surgical center," he said.
The responder glanced toward the county ambulance. "Sir, she's going to St. Vincent's. Trauma is waiting."
"She's going to Vale Surgical. Now."
"That isn't a trauma hospital."
"I own it." Adrian's voice went flat. "Alive or dead, she goes there. Nina can't wait any longer."
For a few seconds, I thought I had misunderstood him. The rain struck the metal roof in loud, separate beats.
Nina.
I knew dozens of women. Only one mattered enough for Adrian to reroute an ambulance carrying his dying wife.
The medic beside me checked the blood-pressure cuff again. "Mr. Vale, there may be another issue. We ran a rapid test while we were trying to stabilize her. Your wife is pregnant. Based on the hormone level, probably around twelve weeks."
I stopped hearing the rain.
Pregnant.
Adrian and I slept together every Sunday night. It had become a ritual so regular I sometimes hated myself for noticing. Afterward he brought me water and watched while I swallowed the birth-control pill he kept in the bedside drawer. I had thought his caution came from wanting more time before we had another child.
Another child. Evan had been eighteen months old when Adrian placed him in my arms and told me his mother had died after a difficult delivery. I had raised him from that day forward.
Adrian's fingers moved from my cheek to my lower abdomen. He pressed where the seat belt had bruised me.
Pain flashed white behind my eyes.
"She isn't having my child," he said.
"The pregnancy raises the surgical risk," the medic said. "If you're talking about organ donation, she cannot consent in this condition."
"Consent has been handled."
"Not by her."
Adrian looked toward someone I couldn't see. "Dr. Keller knows what he's being paid to do. Transfer her."
The medic hesitated. Another man spoke quietly near the ambulance, mentioning contracts, licenses, and the Vale Foundation. Money changed the shape of the conversation. It always did around Adrian.
They lifted my stretcher.
I forced my eyelids to remain slack. If Adrian knew I could hear him, I didn't know what he would do. The man I loved had just ordered strangers to take my body somewhere he controlled.
Inside the private ambulance, a doctor examined me while Adrian sat near my feet.
"Her left kidney appears intact," the doctor said. "But she has internal bleeding from the collision. We need imaging before—"
"Nina is already prepped."
"Mr. Vale, even if the match information is accurate, removing a kidney from an unstable trauma patient could kill her. The pregnancy will almost certainly be lost. There may be damage to the uterus already, but we won't know until we open—"
"Then open her."
The doctor went silent.
Adrian leaned closer. His thumb brushed blood from my mouth with the same tenderness he used when we were alone.
"The pregnancy doesn't matter," he said. "The Vale family doesn't need a child raised by a woman like her mother. Evan is the only son I recognize."
The doctor lowered his voice. "And if the Whitmores investigate? If they learn the boy isn't Mrs. Vale's biological child—"
"Her family is based in Toronto and London. They have investments here, not control. Claire hasn't questioned Evan's birth in three years. She won't start now."
His hand settled on my stomach again.
"No general anesthetic," he said. "Use local if you have to. She's stronger than she looks."
The doctor stared at him. "That would be torture."
"That would be efficient."
I wanted to scream. My body wouldn't obey.
The ambulance turned hard, and pain rolled through me. Adrian caught my shoulder so I wouldn't slide from the stretcher.
"If you hate her this much," the doctor asked, "why did you marry her? Why not end the engagement and be with Ms. Shaw?"
Adrian's grip tightened.
"Because Claire paid men to attack Nina four years ago. Nina nearly died. Claire wanted me, so I gave her exactly what she wanted. A marriage long enough to learn what loving me costs."
"You verified the accusation?"
"I saw the aftermath."
That was his answer. Not yes.
I had never hired anyone to hurt Nina. She had been my closest friend since college. When she called me crying that night, I had paid her hospital bill and stayed beside her until morning. Adrian had held me afterward and said he was sorry for ever doubting me.
He had been acting even then.
At Vale Surgical, they wheeled me through a service entrance. No intake desk. No electronic consent. A nurse removed my jewelry and put it in a plastic bag without labeling it. Dr. Keller argued once more, then stopped when Adrian reminded him who funded the center.
The local anesthetic dulled the first incision but not what followed. I stayed trapped behind closed eyes while pressure became tearing pain and tearing pain became something too large for thought. When my body convulsed, hands pinned my shoulders and hips.
"Her pressure's crashing."
"Keep going," Adrian said.
Someone announced that the fetal heartbeat was gone.
I had learned about my child less than an hour earlier. I lost it before I could touch my stomach without Adrian's hand hurting me there.
The surgeon found uterine damage from the crash and uncontrolled bleeding worsened by the illegal procedure. I heard the words emergency hysterectomy. I heard Adrian approve it.
Then he made a phone call.
"Destroy the SUV and the truck," he said. "Scrub the service records. By morning, this needs to look like an ordinary highway accident."
The last thing I understood before darkness took me was that the collision had not been bad luck.
My husband had arranged it.
When I woke, late-afternoon light filled a private room. Adrian sat beside the bed with his tie loosened and both hands wrapped around one of mine.
He looked exhausted. His eyes were red.
"Claire." He stood so quickly the chair scraped the floor. "Thank God."
For one stupid second, habit answered him. My fingers almost closed around his.
Then the wound in my side pulled when I breathed.
I remembered the operating room. I remembered the child I would never meet.
Adrian bent to kiss my forehead.
I let him.
"My phone was destroyed," I whispered. "Can I use yours? I told my parents I'd be home today. My mother will worry."
He unlocked it without hesitation and placed it in my hand.
Adrian believed his security was flawless. He had paid consultants to build a custom encrypted shell around his messages and financial files.
Before our marriage, I had designed intrusion-detection systems for Whitmore Capital. I had left the work because Adrian said he hated watching me lose sleep over breaches. He had forgotten what I knew because he had never considered my skill important unless it served him.
His phone rested in my palm.
For the first time since the crash, I had something he didn't know I possessed.

The Rejected Luna’s Rise
Luna Ariana Volkstane slid the formal rejection request across the table. "Let's end this bond. It's better for you, me, and your first love."
He just smirked. "You want me to reject you? You think you can break our bond that easily?"
So she did. Ariana cut ties with him completely, poured herself into her career, and rose to global fame as a legendary healer, her knowledge of rare herbs, wolf anatomy, and ancient magic sought after across continents.
The powerful suitors lined up. The Alpha of an overseas empire whispered, "Ariana, hurry up and perform the severing ritual. I can't wait to claim you." A powerful pack leader vowed, "I'll be there with you the day you break the bond." A legendary wolf attorney promised, "I'll handle your rejection case with the pack council myself."
Ariana just rubbed her temples. It's not that she didn't want the split, she wanted it more than anything, it's just that the Alpha she was mated to refused to let go.
Finally, she announced, "Whoever can officially get me rejected, I'll put you at the head table of my bond-breaking celebration."
Not long after, Alpha Damian was served the official rejection request right in the middle of an emergency pack council meeting. That same afternoon, he was attacked by rogues at the gates of his own territory.
When Ariana showed up at the pack infirmary with healing herbs, she repeated calmly, "Let's sever the mate bond. It's better for you, me, and everyone else."
But the cold, untouchable Alpha pulled her into his arms, his eyes blood-red with fury. "You want me to reject you? Over my dead body."
