Introduction
Pearl Lawrence has it all—a flourishing fashion accessories empire, a fierce spirit, and a wedding just around the corner. But her world shatters when she catches her fiancé in the arms of her best friend. Before the dust can even settle, her grandmother, Sarah Lawrence, delivers a ruthless ultimatum: marry within seven days or lose the "Lawrence Heritage," a legendary inheritance left behind by Pearl’s late mother.
With her heart in pieces and her legacy on the line, Pearl makes a desperate move. She meets Gabriel Martins, a handsome, seemingly down-on-his-luck stranger, and offers him a deal: a marriage of convenience where she provides for him in exchange for his hand in marriage. To Pearl, Gabriel is a simple man she can protect and manage—a "charity project" to secure her future.
What Pearl doesn't know is that Gabriel isn't the pauper she thinks he is. He is the elusive power player who owns 85% of the UK’s corporate landscape—a man whose face and name are the world’s best-kept secrets. Having fallen for Pearl at first sight, Gabriel steps into the role of the humble "house husband," quietly dismantling Pearl’s corporate enemies from the shadows while she struggles to keep her company afloat. As Pearl begins to fall for the man who is always there to catch her, she must eventually face the ultimate truth: her "poor" husband is the very titan she’s been trying to impress.
In a world of high fashion and higher stakes, Pearl is about to learn that love is the one thing wealth can’t buy, but it’s the only thing worth keeping.
Chapter 1
The air in the VIP suite of the "Emerald Lounge" smelled of expensive lilies and betrayal.
Pearl Lawrence stood frozen at the doorway, her hand still gripping the silver tray of customized cupcakes she’d brought as a surprise. She was supposed to be at a final fitting for her wedding dress, but she had finished early and wanted to share a moment of quiet with the man she was set to marry in exactly two weeks.
Inside the suite, the scene was far from quiet.
Her fiancé, Julian Thorne, the man she had spent three years building a life with, had his hands buried in the hair of a woman whose face was all too familiar. Maya Vance—Pearl’s maid of honor, her "sister" by choice, and the head of marketing at Pearly Fashion Accessories—was draped over him like a cheap silk scarf.
"Julian," Maya whispered, her voice a sharp contrast to the loyal friend Pearl thought she knew. "What if she finds out? You know how Pearl is. She’ll ruin us."
Julian let out a cold, dismissive chuckle that cut through Pearl’s heart like a serrated blade. "Pearl is too busy playing 'CEO of the Year' to notice anything that isn't a profit margin. Besides, once we’re married, the Lawrence assets become communal. She’ll be too tied up in the paperwork to do anything but cry."
The tray in Pearl’s hands trembled. A single cupcake topped with a sugar-pearl—the symbol of her brand—slid off and hit the plush carpet with a dull thud.
The sound was enough. Julian and Maya bolted apart, their faces draining of color as they turned to see Pearl standing there.
Pearl didn't scream. She didn't throw the tray. She didn't even cry. Instead, she felt a terrifying, icy clarity wash over her. She set the tray down on a nearby console table with a steady click.
"The sugar-pearls were a nice touch, don't you think?" Pearl’s voice was low, vibrating with a lethal calm.
"Pearl! It’s—it’s not what it looks like," Julian stammered, frantically adjusting his tie.
"Really, Julian? Because it looks like a breach of contract," Pearl said, stepping into the room. Her long, dark hair caught the light of the chandelier, and her eyes, usually warm and ambitious, were now as hard as flint. "And Maya... I hope the marketing strategy you were discussing involves how to find a new job by tomorrow morning. You’re fired."
Maya opened her mouth to argue, but the look in Pearl’s eyes silenced her. "Pearl, please, we can talk about this," Maya whimpered.
"There is nothing to discuss with a thief," Pearl snapped. She turned her gaze to Julian. "As for you... the wedding is off. I’ll have my lawyers send over the papers to decouple our joint ventures by midnight. Don't be in the office tomorrow. Don't be in my house tonight. In fact, just stop existing in my line of sight."
"You can't do that!" Julian yelled, his fear turning into desperate anger. "The invitations are out! The board of directors expects this merger! You’ll look like a fool, Pearl!"
"I’d rather be a fool in a boardroom than a victim in a bedroom," Pearl retorted. She turned on her heel and walked out, her heels clicking a rhythmic, funeral march for her dead relationship.
Two hours later, Pearl was sitting in the mahogany-lined study of the Lawrence estate. She was staring at a glass of whiskey she hadn't touched when the heavy oak doors swiveled open.
Her grandmother, Sarah Lawrence, walked in. At seventy-five, Sarah was still the most formidable woman in London’s social circles. She didn't offer a hug; she offered a challenge.
"I heard about the spectacle at the lounge," Sarah said, sitting across from her.
"News travels fast," Pearl muttered.
"It travels faster when you’re a Lawrence. But we have a problem, Pearl. A much bigger one than Julian’s lack of spine."
Pearl looked up, her brow furrowing. "What could be bigger than my life imploding?"
Sarah leaned forward, her expression grave. "Your mother’s heritage. The secret trust she left behind—the designs, the offshore patents, the liquid capital that could take Pearly Fashion from a local success to a global empire. You know the condition. You must be married by your twenty-sixth birthday to claim it."
Pearl’s heart sank. Her twenty-sixth birthday was in seven days. "Grandma, I just broke up with my fiancé. I don't even have a boyfriend, let alone a husband."
"Then find one," Sarah said simply. "The Lawrence Heritage is the only thing that will protect your company from the hostile takeover Julian is undoubtedly planning with his father’s firm. If you aren't married in a week, the trust dissolves, and the assets go to the Lawrence Foundation—which is currently chaired by your Uncle Silas. You know he’ll sell you out the moment he gets the chance."
Pearl leaned back, feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders. She had worked so hard to build her brand, to honor her mother’s memory. To lose it all because of a cheating man and a cruel clause in a will was unthinkable.
"Seven days," Pearl whispered.
"Seven days," Sarah confirmed. "I don't care if it’s a prince or a pauper, Pearl. Just get a ring on that finger, or prepare to watch your empire burn."
Pearl needed air. She drove aimlessly through the rain-slicked streets of London until she found herself in a quiet, dimly lit corner of the city. She pulled over near a small, unassuming pub called The Anchor.
Inside, it was warm and smelled of hops and old wood. It was the kind of place where billionaires didn't go. She took a seat at the bar, her designer coat looking wildly out of place.
"Rough night?"
The voice was deep, smooth, and had a slight gravelly edge to it that made the hair on the back of Pearl's neck stand up.
She turned to her left. Sitting two stools away was a man who looked like he had been sculpted from shadows and starlight. He wore a faded charcoal hoodie and jeans that had seen better days, but his face was striking—strong jaw, piercing dark eyes, and a messy mop of black hair. He was holding a glass of plain water.
He looked... poor. He looked like someone who had nothing to lose.An idea, insane and desperate, began to take root in Pearl’s mind.
"How rough?" the man asked again, a small, curious smirk playing on his lips.
Pearl looked at him, really looked at him. He was incredibly handsome, despite the humble clothes. He had the kind of presence that suggested he could handle himself in a storm.
"Do you want to change your life?" Pearl asked, her voice steadying. The man, Gabriel, tilted his head. He had been watching her since she walked in. He saw the pain in her eyes, but more than that, he saw the fire. He had 85% of the UK’s wealth in his portfolio, but he had never seen anything as captivating as the woman sitting in front of him.

Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."

I fell. My head cracked against the corner.

Their laughter turned to gasps.
The door slammed.
