My Surgeon Father Let My Mother Die. Now I Took Everything
Joy Brown · Ongoing · 6.1k Words
Introduction
His hands were the best in the business. Yet on the day my mother had a sudden heart attack and needed an emergency transfer, he turned her away, claiming every operating room was full.
Later, someone photographed him on a sunlit lawn at a country club on the edge of town, showering another woman's daughter with rose petals for her birthday.
My mother died on a gurney, waiting to be saved.
He never showed his face, not even at the burial.
For twenty years, my uncle drove a night-shift cab to put me through medical school.
The day I became the youngest Chief Credentialing Examiner in the history of the State Department of Health, the hospital group sent over a promotion file for a genius young surgeon.
The group's CEO vouched for her personally, his tone unusually low.
"Examiner Lane, this girl is extraordinarily gifted. One signature from you and she becomes the youngest woman ever named Division Chief of Surgery!"
I flipped through her résumé.
When I reached the section for family and emergency contacts, I froze.
I stared at the girl's photo for a long time.
Then I closed the file and said quietly,
"I'm sorry. I won't sign off on her review."
Chapter 1
My father is the youngest chief of cardiac surgery in the country, the ace of his field.
Hollis's smile froze.
He looked down at the file I'd pushed back across the desk, then up at me.
"Examiner Lane... what do you mean, you won't sign off?"
"Exactly what I said."
He tugged at his tie.
"Would you take another look? Chloe has logged three hundred more cases as primary surgeon than the promotion threshold requires. She scored straight A's on every simulation assessment. Last year she handled three intraoperative emergencies and earned perfect marks on all of them. With a record like that, you won't find a second attending her age anywhere in the country."
"Mr. Hollis, the Chief Credentialing Examiner has the authority to reject any file in question. The group's consent isn't required."
His hand rested on the file's cover. He didn't pick it up.
"Examiner Lane, how about this. I've reserved a table at Lakeshore Country Club tomorrow night. We could sit down and talk it through properly—"
"Please take the file back with you."
He said nothing for a few seconds. The last trace of a smile left his mouth.
He picked up the file and turned to go.
At the door he paused.
"Examiner Lane, you're twenty-nine."
"Yes."
"This position can't have come easy."
His voice was low, almost as if he were talking to himself.
The door closed, and the office went quiet.
I turned and looked at the faint crease the file had pressed into my desk.
The emergency contact line held two words.
Richard Lane.
I stared at the name for a while, then looked out the window.
The sky was a clear blue.
The same blue as that day twenty years ago.
My uncle Frank told me he'd stood outside County General that day, dialing my father's number over and over.
Thirty-seven missed calls.
The thirty-eighth went through. It was loud on the other end: a child laughing, a band playing.
My father said exactly one thing.
"The ORs are full today. We can't take her."
Then he hung up.
Frank sat in the ER hallway all night, holding my mother, who no longer had a heartbeat.
The next day, someone posted photos to the local community forum.
In them, he stands in a sharp suit beneath a balloon arch while staff behind him toss pink rose petals into the air.
Sunlight everywhere.
That afternoon, my secretary knocked.
"Examiner Lane, Lane Medical Group called. They want to know whether you've finished reviewing the file Mr. Hollis brought over, and when they can expect approval."
"I'm done. Tell them the formal rejection letter goes out through the system tomorrow."
She hesitated.
"Examiner Lane... the controlling owner of Lane Medical Group is Richard Lane."
"I know."
She studied my face and didn't say anything more.
That night I called Frank.
He was out on his night shift. Behind his voice, the wipers swept back and forth.
"Frank, did you eat dinner yet?"
"Yeah. Why the sudden call?"
"No reason. Just checking in."
He laughed and didn't press.
Before we hung up, he said, "The day after tomorrow's your mom's anniversary. Don't forget."
"I remember."
That night I opened my safe.
Inside was a manila envelope, its tape gone yellow.
Two documents were inside.
The first was the Emergency Transfer Evaluation Memo that Richard Lane had signed and filed twenty years ago that day. In the conclusion field: Transfer denied.
The second was the operating room log and bed-status record from St. Anne's Regional Medical Center for the same day.
Dedicated cardiac ORs: three, all vacant. Open ICU beds: six. On-call surgical team: fully on standby.
Ready to start a case at any moment.
It had taken me seven years to track down those two documents.
One came from the Department of Health's old archives. The other was a backup copy I'd pulled from St. Anne's IT department.
They had never been laid side by side on the same table.
Because at six o'clock this evening, the corporate secretary of Lane Medical Group's board had called the Office of Professional Conduct at the Department of Health.
To file a complaint against Chief Credentialing Examiner Ellis Lane for "abuse of authority and pursuing a personal vendetta."
I had waited a very long time for that phone call.

When fate places Andrew Thompson, the son of his greatest rival, into his hands, the plan was simple: use him, break him, and discard him like a toy that has lost its appeal.
What Vincenzo did not expect was that, beneath the youthful skin and the appearance of innocence, Andrew hid the same abyss as he did.
Vincenzo never wanted redemption. He never wanted someone to save him from his own darkness. He was seeking a mirror. And in Andrew, he found the partner who, upon seeing his blood-stained hands, does not recoil in terror, but trembles with desire.
In this perverse game, the "little toy" proves to be the perfect executioner. The mafia leader found someone who not only accepts his cruel side but cultivates it, feeding the monster Vincenzo has always been.
Where there should have been fear, lust emerged. Where there should have been hatred, a perverse loyalty was born. Andrew Thompson is the dark reflection of Vincenzo, the soldier the underworld did not see coming, and the man who proved that, for some, paradise only makes sense if it is in the middle of chaos.
Vincenzo opened the doors to his empire, but Andrew was the only one capable of invading his heart.

Tango 2 the Alpha's Heart
My gaze snapped to his. He was smiling, causing my heart to skip a painful beat. Before I could respond, the music began, and my body instinctively reacted to the sweet melody.
I found myself molded to Lex's will, my feet irresistibly following the dance steps.
The crowd gasped as Lex pulled me into a more intimate position, his hands roaming over my body in a seductive manner.
The experience was both terrifying and magical, allowing me to feel every longing emotion through the dance.
I soon found myself lost in his arms.
When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.
The ballroom fell silent.
