Chapter 1
Fifteen days before our Bonding Ceremony, Grant Mercer tells me he intends to father a baby with his dead brother's widow. He expects me to accept it as pack duty.
He doesn't know I'm already planning to cancel the ceremony, walk away from Granite Ridge, and take back the healing career I gave up for him.
...
Our Bonding Ceremony was fifteen days away when Grant asked me to meet him in the council room at Granite Ridge Pack headquarters.
Asked was generous. Grant was the Alpha. Even when his messages used the word please, everyone heard the command underneath.
He stood at the end of the conference table instead of sitting, one hand braced beside the pack council's stamped resolution. The windows behind him framed a hard blue stretch of Colorado sky and the dark line of the Rockies.
"Elise needs protection," he said. "Since Owen died, several council members have wanted her moved out of the central compound. She was the widow of the previous pack leader. If she carries a baby with Alpha blood, no one can question her right to stay."
Owen Mercer had been Grant's older brother and Elise's bonded mate. Three months earlier, during a Red Creek Pack raid along the territory line, Owen had thrown himself between Grant and a killing blow. Owen died before the fighting ended.
Grant had carried that death like a chain around his throat. I understood the debt. I did not understand why he thought I should pay it.
"What exactly are you telling me?" I asked.
His jaw tightened, impatient with a question whose answer he considered settled. "The arrangement is formal. Elise and I would not become mates. We would be having a child to preserve Owen's line and stabilize the pack."
"Before our ceremony."
"Yes."
"And you already took this to the pack council."
"They approved it."
For a moment, the only sound in the room was the heating vent ticking behind the wall.
Five years earlier, Grant had been a Gamma with more ambition than influence. I had treated his injuries, covered his patrol shifts when his wolf ran too hot, and helped him build alliances with lower-status pack members who remembered what it was like to live outside the central compound. We had grown up together in the outlying district. I had spent half my life believing that meant I knew him.
He came around the table and reached for my shoulder. "Nora, you are still my future Luna. This changes nothing between us."
I moved before he touched me.
"It changes nothing for you," I said. "You get my loyalty, her baby, Owen's reputation, and the council's support. What do I get? A ceremony after everyone knows you got another woman pregnant?"
"Don't reduce this to jealousy."
"Don't dress betrayal up as pack politics."
His eyes cooled. The command aura that made younger wolves lower their heads pressed against the room, but I had stood beside him too long to bend automatically.
"My position was bought with Owen's blood," he said. "I will not dishonor him."
"Then honor him with your own life. Not mine."
Grant turned away, walked to the windows, and planted both hands on the sill. I knew that posture. He used it when he wanted the room to wait for him. Pack officials waited. Patrol captains waited. I had always waited.
"You are reacting to the shock," he said. "Once you have time, you'll understand why this is necessary."
"You mean I'll calm down and become convenient again."
"I mean you know what leadership costs."
"Then let it cost you something. Not me."
His back went rigid. Five years earlier, that would have frightened me into softening my tone. I would have apologized for embarrassing him and found a gentler way to ask for the same basic respect. That afternoon, I finally heard how much work I'd been doing just to keep him comfortable.
Grant faced me again. "We have survived worse than this."
He was right in a way he did not understand. I had survived his distance, his ambition, and the countless evenings when he accepted my care without noticing the person providing it. The question was no longer whether I could survive one more injury. It was why I kept volunteering for them.
I remembered the winter Grant first decided he wanted to lead Granite Ridge. We were nineteen. He rented a room above a hardware store, and he showed up at my parents' back door after midnight with split knuckles and a plan no one else believed in. I cleaned his hands at their kitchen table while he described the pack he would build: fair promotions, safer patrols, a medical system that served families outside the central compound.
I believed him so completely that I built my whole life around his dream.
Years later, the safer patrols existed. The clinic had better funding. Grant had become much of what he promised. That success made it harder to admit what he had become with me. A man could improve a pack and still make the woman beside him smaller every year.
Grant must have seen something change in my face, because his tone eased. "Once the baby is born, things will settle. You and I can focus on our future."
His cell phone rang before he could answer. Elise's name lit the screen. Grant stepped into the hall, shutting down our mental link as he went.
Through the glass, I watched his entire body change. His shoulders loosened. His voice softened. When he smiled, it was the easy smile I remembered from childhood and had spent years trying to earn back.
My phone buzzed.
The message came from a number I did not know. Attached was a prenatal report from the Granite Ridge medical center. A digital verification mark glowed in the corner.
Patient: Elise Hale.
Pregnancy: four weeks.
The date at the top was one month old.
I thought of the resolution on the table behind me. It was dated last week. The pregnancy had started a month ago. His careful speech about duty hadn't come before the choice. He'd written it afterward to make the choice sound unavoidable.
I photographed the report, forwarded a copy to a secure account, and deleted the message from my phone. The practical motions steadied me. Grant was still in the hall smiling into his call, certain I would be where he left me when he returned.
Grant was not asking for permission to father a child with Elise. He had already done it. This meeting was only the last courtesy he planned to give me.

My Billionaire Husband's Secret
He was the CEO of the Blackwood Group — a man whose wealth and power eclipsed ninety-nine percent of the world.
He was gentle. Romantic. Attentive. I fell for him fast.
But a year into our marriage, I began to notice something — a pattern.
Lucas's sexual appetite was intense — he wanted me almost every night. Yet every single month, he arranged a solo trip to send me away. I told myself it was his way of spoiling me.
Then a message arrived from someone called Sweet An.
Do you really know your husband?
From that day on, my life filled with shadows.
I suspected my husband of having an affair.
When Lucas and I made love, something felt wrong — his body too large, too much, like something I couldn't explain.
I heard sounds during sex — animal sounds, like something feral had crawled into bed with us.
My best friend Mia said: "There are men sick enough to let dogs fuck their wives."
The family doctor, Daisy, told me: "You could never stay by Lucas's side forever. Your background doesn't make you worthy of being his wife. Do you understand?"
I went looking for whoever had been tearing my marriage apart. I fought to win my husband back.
But the deeper I searched, the larger the secret grew — something far darker hiding beneath this supposed betrayal.
Does Lucas truly love me?
And why, out of everyone in the world, did he choose to marry me?
