Chapter 1
Sabrina's POV
"I want a divorce, Sabrina."
For a moment the words didn't land. I stood there with my hand still halfway raised, the way it had been when I opened the door, and I watched his mouth to see if he would take it back.
He didn't.
His suitcase sat by the stairs where he'd dropped it. He hadn't taken off his shoes. He hadn't looked at the candles, or the table set for two, or the wine I'd chosen because it used to make him laugh by the second glass. Three weeks in London and the first thing he did in our home was end it standing up, coat still on, like he didn't trust himself to sit down.
"You just walked through the door," I said. My voice came out careful. "We were supposed to be working on things. You said London would help. You said—"
"I was working on moving on."
Something in my chest caved. I had spent seven years learning this man. The tells before an argument. The silences. I had never seen this. This flat, finished quiet.
My hand found my stomach before I could stop it. I pulled it back down. "Is this about the baby we lost? Because Leon, there's something I need to tell you, something that changes—"
"It's not just about the baby." For the first time since he'd walked in, something moved across his face. "It's the grief. It's this house. Every room remembers something we lost in it. I'm tired of trying. I'm tired of failing."
"So you quit?" I stepped toward him, and my voice broke and I hated that it did. "You think I wasn't tired? I buried six of them, Leon. Six. And I got up every time and I stayed, because I thought that was what we did for each other. If you would just listen to me for one minute—"
His expression closed. I watched the last version of him I recognized disappear behind something colder.
"I've met someone else," he said.
The room went quiet. Somewhere on the table, a candle guttered.
"You cheated on me." I said it slowly, because some part of me was still waiting for him to correct me.
"I found happiness," he said, like he'd practiced the line. "I've already filed the papers. She's pregnant. Four months. We're keeping it, and I'm marrying her before the baby comes."
I heard the words in pieces. Pregnant. Four months. Marrying her.
My legs felt distant. I put a hand on the back of the chair to steady myself. I don't think he noticed.
"You let me keep trying," I said. The tears came with no warning, hot and humiliating. "While you had one foot out the door. While I was in that clinic losing them, one after another, you were building a life with someone else. You watched me grieve and said nothing."
"She makes me feel alive," he said, and he wouldn't look at me. "She doesn't carry the weight you do."
The weight you do. As if seven years of trying to give him a family was something I could have just set down.
He bent and picked his suitcase back up. "I just came for a few things. I won't be staying the night."
He walked past me, and his shoulder brushed mine the way it had a thousand times before. It used to mean something. Tonight it felt like being brushed by a stranger.
The door clicked shut.
I didn't know how long I stood in that hallway. Long enough for the candles to burn down. Long enough for the smell of the chicken to go from warm to cold to something that felt cruel.
I slid down until I was sitting against the wall, knees pulled to my chest.
Four hours earlier, I had been a different woman in this house.
I stared at the test on the bathroom counter for ten minutes before I let myself believe it. Six times over seven years I had watched that second line stay a ghost. I had learned not to breathe during the wait.
This time the second line came in dark and didn't waver.
I pressed a hand over my mouth and stood very still. Then I laughed, and it turned into something closer to a sob.
I had cleaned the bathroom twice. I put on the blue dress Leon always said made my eyes look like the ocean. I made his favorite dinner, herb chicken with rosemary. I lit the candles and thought, this is what a beginning looks like.
I had been so sure.
Sitting on the floor now, the dress wrinkled and the dinner cold, I understood that I had spent the last hours of my old life setting a table for a man who had already left it. He had walked in carrying an ending, and I had been standing there holding a beginning.
My phone was still in my hand. I don't know why I called her. Maybe I needed someone to be angry with me. Someone to yell.
She picked up on the second ring.
"Sabrina?"
"He left me." My voice cracked. "Did you know? About Zara. About the baby?"
There was a pause.
"I sent some soup over this afternoon," she said at last. "Try to eat something."
I stared at the wall.
"Did you know?"
Another silence.
"You'll need your strength for the baby," she said quietly.
Then the line went dead.
I sat there with the phone still lit in my hand and understood, in the slow, sinking way your body knows things before your mind is ready to, that I had been the only person in that house who hadn't seen this coming. Not Leon. Not his mother.
The ache started then. Soft at first. I told myself it was just grief.
It didn't stay soft.
By the time I understood something was wrong, really wrong, I was already on my knees in the bathroom, one hand braced against the cold rim of the tub.
Blood.
Not again. Not today. Please not today.
My hands were shaking so bad I could barely dial. I pulled up Leon's name and hit call.
It went straight to voicemail.
I'm bleeding. I think I'm losing the baby. Please come home. Please.
I hung up.
No callback.
Cole would be at work. I shouldn't call him. Not for this. I couldn't be a burden.
The phone slipped from my fingers and hit the tile.
Downstairs, the front door opened.
Footsteps. Fast. Taking the stairs two at a time.
The bathroom door slammed open against the wall.
"Sabrina."
Cole. Leon's best friend. Mine too.
He stood in the doorway in a hoodie and jeans. The one who'd been there for every holiday, every hospital visit, every version of us.
His eyes dropped to the floor. To me. To the blood.
And something in his face broke.
"Hey. Hey, look at me." He was already moving, already on his knees in front of me, one arm sliding under my back, the other brushing hair off my face. "I've got you. I'm calling 911. Stay with me."
"I called Leon," I whispered. My voice sounded far away. "He didn't answer. The baby..."
"Don't talk." His voice cracked. "Just breathe. I'm here. I've got you."
He lifted me off the cold floor and I let him. His arms were the only steady thing left in a world that had spent one single night taking everything else away from me.
