Running from My Ex-Husband with His Twins
Ellis Carter · Ongoing · 44.3k Words
Introduction
Theron's voice remained controlled and cold. "You are not the biological daughter of the Reed family, and they've found their real daughter."
My face drained of color. I had planned to explain everything upon his return, but Victoria had beaten me to it.
"What do you intend to do about our marriage?" I forced myself to ask directly.
"Marriage for me is a procedure, regardless of who it's with." With that, he picked up his briefcase and left.

Six years ago, Leila's fake heiress identity was exposed. Theron ruthlessly divorced her, and she was framed for attempted murder. Only after the divorce did she discover she was carrying his child. Blacklisted and desperate, she survived in a basement until her real family found her—she was the lost princess of Chicago's powerful Randall Family.
She gave birth to precious twins, but was told her baby boy didn't survive, leaving only her beloved daughter. What she didn't know was that destiny had other plans.
Six years later, a business venture brought her back to San Francisco, where she faced her cold ex-husband—who had a five-year-old son. Even more twisted - he was now her patient, completely at her mercy. Gone was his former arrogance; now he pursued her with desperate intensity. Could she ever forgive the man who destroyed her, or would she make him pay for the hell he put her through?
Chapter 1
Leila's POV
I stood in the corner of the Reed family ballroom, watching the celebration supposedly welcoming home the "true daughter" of the family. The elite of San Francisco surrounded Chloe Reed—my replacement.
One month ago, my father John Reed had insisted on a DNA test for a medical screening. That routine procedure shattered twenty-five years of identity in a single afternoon. The results were clear: I was not a Reed by blood.
"She carries herself remarkably well for someone in her position," I overheard a woman whisper to her companion, not bothering to lower her voice as I passed. "But then, what can you expect? Blood will tell."
I maintained my practiced smile, even as I felt the subtle shift in the room. These same people who had sought my company at countless galas and charity events now regarded me with a mixture of pity and thinly veiled disdain. This house, which had been my home since infancy, had never felt so foreign.
The Reed family's swift embrace of Chloe was nothing short of remarkable. A month ago, she'd been unknown to all of us. Now, she commanded the room as though born to it—which, according to the DNA results, she was.
Chloe spotted me and glided over, a small entourage of Reed family friends in tow. Golden hair perfectly styled, her azure dress clearly chosen to complement her eyes. Her smile was warm, her posture gracious.
"Leila," she said, her voice dripping with practiced sympathy. "I want you to know how deeply I feel for your situation. If there's anything I can do to make this transition easier for you, please don't hesitate to ask."
The family friends nodded approvingly. "Such compassion," one elderly aunt murmured. "That's the true Reed family spirit."
When the others drifted away to the buffet, Chloe's smile transformed. The warmth vanished, replaced by something cold and calculating.
"Don't think you can continue leveraging your Sterling connection," she said quietly. "Soon you'll have nothing. No family, no status, no husband."
I met her gaze steadily. "It's fascinating how quickly your mask slips, Chloe."
"Enjoy the party, Leila," she replied, her smile returning as a waiter approached. "It may be your last as a Reed."
Throughout the evening, I noticed Susan and John Reed—the only parents I'd ever known—attempting to corner me for a private conversation. I evaded them skillfully, having already learned from the family butler what they intended: a "dignified exit" from both the family and my marriage to Theron Sterling.
I caught fragments of John's hushed conversation with a business associate: "The marriage was always meant to solidify the alliance between our families. Now that Chloe has returned..."
Susan, meanwhile, was subtly informing her social circle that my marriage to Theron would need to be "reassessed in light of recent developments."
Twenty-five years of care and supposed love, rendered meaningless by a single DNA test.
I made my way to the champagne table, needing a moment alone with my thoughts. My mind drifted to Theron—my husband of three years. From the beginning, I'd understood our marriage was a business arrangement between the Reed technology and the Sterling financial dynasty. Yet somehow, against my better judgment, I'd fallen in love with the cold, brilliant man.
There had been moments when I thought I glimpsed something beyond calculation in his eyes—a softness when we were alone, a protective stance when others approached me too aggressively at functions. Foolishly, I'd believed time might thaw his reserve.
Now I wondered how he would react to the news. Would he stand by me, or would family alliances prevail? He was returning from London soon, and I was determined he would hear the truth from me first.
Across the room, I observed the power dynamics shifting before my eyes. Business titans and social luminaries who had once sought my approval now orbited around Chloe.
Former friends strategically avoided eye contact as I passed. In just one month, I had transformed from the Reed family's crown jewel to a pariah, a counterfeit exposed and discarded.
As the evening wore on, I decided to visit the restroom, needing respite from the performance. I'd barely entered the hallway when I sensed Chloe following me.
"You know what's most amusing?" she said, dropping all pretense of civility. "When the Reeds found me, I was just a small-town girl from nowhere special. And you? Without the Reed family backing, you're nothing."
"Theron needs a true lady of standing, not an impostor with questionable bloodlines," she continued.
I maintained my composure. "Theron and I have been married for three years. Our relationship isn't something you could possibly understand."
Chloe laughed, the sound sharp and unpleasant. "He'll discard you for family interests without a second thought. Just like MY parents did."
"You overestimate your importance," I replied, though doubt had begun to creep in.
As the party drew to a close, I decided to leave early. I couldn't bear another minute of feigned sympathy and whispered speculation. I headed toward the main staircase, only to find Chloe suddenly appearing at the top.
"Did you know?" she called down, her voice carrying enough to attract attention. "Theron will divorce you soon, and I'll be the next Mrs. Sterling."
My emotions flared, but I kept them carefully controlled. "Excuse me, I'm leaving."
"Leaving? You think you still have a home at the Sterling estate? You're homeless now, counterfeit!"
We faced each other on the stairs, tension crackling between us. I attempted to move past her, but she blocked my path.
"Look at you," she hissed, her expression twisting with malice. "Playing the elegant socialite. Twenty-five years of refinement, and yet you have slum blood running through your veins!"
I clenched my fists but maintained control. "I'm not interested in arguing with you."
She stepped closer, her smile cruel. "Victoria told me he never loved you—merely tolerated you. Now he can finally be rid of the impostor and marry a true lady of society!"
Suddenly, Chloe grabbed my wrist, her expression changing dramatically.
"Help!" she screamed at the top of her lungs.
Shocked, I tried to pull away. "What are you doing? Let go of me!"
She clutched my hand tighter, pulling it toward herself. Party guests turned at the commotion, faces registering alarm as they looked toward the staircase.
John and Susan rushed forward.
Chloe's face contorted with triumph as she whispered, "This is just the beginning..."
Then she abruptly released her grip, deliberately throwing herself backward. In that final moment, she grabbed my hand and pushed it against her body.
I watched in horror as Chloe tumbled down the stairs, the shocked gasps of the guests filling the room.
