Elk Entertainment · Ongoing · 68.2k Words
Introduction
What troubles you, my angel?”
She opened her mouth to speak, but it snapped shut the next second. She looked to be deep in thoughts as she pondered on her answer. Then finally, she shrugged. “Rejection I guess, I am scared that the wolves will reject me as their queen.”
My grandfather could never accept my dad, my dad's pack could never accept my mother,” she looked me dead in the eye and the unsaid words hung in the air like high tension wires.
And your pack may never accept me...
How can they reject what I, their Alpha loved the most in this world? How can they reject you? Heck, who in their right mind can even reject you?”
Chapter 1
Chloe's POV:
I looked around, but there was still no sign of Angelo.
I had appeared at the boundary just as I had prepared my mind to. Angelo was supposed to be here waiting, because he had left before I did, but he hadn't. Not being known for my patience, I was going to leave without him but then, I still had some unanswered questions which needed answers.
I dropped on the floor, flipping my long jacket to the back as I sat with my knees raised and my arms around my legs. My hand reached out for a little weed and I started toying with it, plucking of the leaves one after the other, all the while murmuring:
“He loves me...”
“He loves me not.”
“He loves me.”
“He loves me—”
“Not,” someone interjected from behind me.
At the sound of his voice, my head quickly whipped around and there he stood with a smirk on his face. “Hi sis,” he said, waving a hand.
“Don’t get too friendly,” I said with a roll of my eyes. “Where have you been, by the way?”
He heaved a sigh, soft footsteps approaching then he lowered himself onto the earth beside me. “Duty calls,” he said with a little shrug. “What did you want to talk about?”
The way he shifted the discussion, not even bothering to ask about me and Marcus, made a strange feeling stir at the bottom of my stomach. It felt unsettling because; unlike the Angelo I remembered knowing, today, he was a little on the stiffer side but maybe it was just me seeing things that way.
His eyes met mine, like he had felt my gaze upon him. “What troubles you so, spit it out already!”
Since he wanted to play coy like he didn't know of the matters that troubled me, I decided to not play along with him and just be blunt. “ After the situation that claimed mom's and my dad's life, why didn't you take me under your protection?”
He was quiet for far too long, like he was thinking up a response. “That is what your mother would have wanted, I guess...”
He guessed...
Also, I didn't miss the part where he referred to our mother as mine only. My eyes narrowed as I drank him in, my eyes searching for a clue I had no idea of.
Since he was being a lot stranger than I would have liked, I decided to keep the rest of my revelations to myself only letting go of what I didn't think was important. “What have you been up to?”
His green eyes regarded me carefully, then he looked away almost immediately. “Nothing much, just stuff.”
I sighed dramatically, a puff of air leaving me. “Why do I feel like you don't wanna talk to me?” I asked, watching him carefully to see what kind of face he would make. “Or, did I do something wrong?”
“No you didn't,” he replied quickly. “It’s just that I don't know what to say to you. Your whole memory of me has been erased and I doubt you would remember, or do you?”
I held my breath, refusing to meet his calculating eyes. There was this aura he had about him, which gave off weird vibes. Not wanting to attract any further suspicions, I gave him a mindless shrug then said: “I do not and do not wish to remember anything of my past. It all went away with my parents death, I wouldn't want to go back to that time.”
He heaved a sigh, the corner of his lips curving into a smirk. “Yeah...let it stay in the past, it's better that way.”
Weird!
No matter how I tried, I couldn't shake off the unsettling feeling that seemed to form and make itself permanent in my stomach. I discreetly moved away from him, watching how he watched me through the corner of his eyes.
I waited for him to speak but the silence seemed endless and at some point, I realized that maybe he had no intentions of helping me. “So...where do we go from here?” I asked half heartedly.
Did I really want to leave? No. I would miss the lands which I had grown to love, I would miss Lilian and Mark, even Titus. But of all, I would miss Marcus the most.
But he was the same reason why I had to leave. He needed to get himself together and put his mind in order, to be able to accept me so I could one day rule beside him in honor and dignity. He couldn't keep seeing me as a weakness, he needed to recognize my strength and accord me the respect I deserved.
“We?” He asked, disbelief laced in his voice. Something that resembled a laugh escaped his throat, but it sounded more like the sound of a car being strangled. “You are on your own as far as I am concerned, if it were in my power, I wouldn't take you with me.”
My eyes narrowed infinitesimally, as I regarded him with narrowed eyes. My suspicions grew alongside a troubled feeling and I couldn't help but worry my lower lip to show my nervousness.
He suddenly rose to his feet and I imitated his movement, ignoring the piercing look he shot my way. He started to walk and I followed, falling into step beside him. He seemed awfully quiet, and he wouldn't even as much as part his lips whenever I asked him a question.
“Tell me about my maternal family,” he pressed on, not minding if I'll get snubbed for the one hundredth time today. I waited patiently for him to speak and finally, he huffed a breath.
“There is nothing to tell,” he said in a low voice that I had to strain my ears to actually hear the words. “It is dark, cold and...” he hesitated. “Unforgiving,”
I waited for him to say more, but when he didn't, I was forced to ask again. “Tell me about our family?”
He gave me a suspicious look, his eyes roaming all over my body in a way that I took a couple of steps back. “And why do you want to know that?”
“Just because I want,” I replied with a careless shrug.
“Are you interested in the throne?”
His words spat more venom than I had heard in all of my life. I had no doubt now, I was certain!
“Maybe,” I said, watching how his eyes hardened and his head whipped towards me. He looked like he was about to strangle the life out of me, and I voice myself not to grin at my own mischievous behavior. “Maybe not. But I know I have what it takes, to be queen of the underworld.”
He gulped visibly, his face reddening with anger as every muscle on his face kept straining. He couldn't scare me even if he wanted to and the fresh memory which started to filter into my mind as I stared longer, made me want to rip him to shreds!
“I,” he started in a cold voice, passing me a forced smile which came off as a grimace. “Wouldn’t advise you to do that, it's unwise for a little girl, don't you think sis?”
“I. Am. Not. Your. Sister!”
He looked taken aback by my outburst, and I cursed myself inwardly, not liking that I let my emotions over shadow my reasoning.
“I mean," I started, trying to fix what I had almost ruined. “You weren't there for me when I needed you the most, why act like an older brother now? It's unfair to me...”
He gave me a blank look, his green eyes as lifeless as a log of wood. He stared too long, far too long for my own comfort, but I put up with it and not once did my eyes waver from his.
“You have a point.” He finally looked away from me, continuing in his strides which I followed. “Don’t get too ambitious, don't be inspired to know too much. Your mother had her reasons—”
“Our mother,” I hissed in correction.
“—why did she erase your memories?” He continued like he hadn't heard my protest. “Don't try to revive them, just take whatever you are handed and be content with it. Don't get too greedy.”
I scowled, “you are such a dick, I hope you know that?” I spat. “I am ashamed that I share a mother with y—”
“This would be the first and last time I would warn you,” he started in a chilly voice. “That woman was not my mother. She ceased being my mother when she left me and decided to have you.” He gave me a disgusted look. “Only seeing how much you look like her, irks me and I do not wish to further be in your presence!”
“Then go! To hell with you, who even needs you by the way?” I fired back. “I requested to see someone else, I wonder what you are doing here by the way, get lost and stay gone! Forever!”
His eyes bored into mine, and I could see the curiosity dancing in them. He arched his brow. “You requested to see who? Somebody else?”
That was when I realized that I had slipped up. Fuck, I cursed inwardly. How could I have let that slip out?
He kept staring at me in expectation, his body tensed and set just about to strike if I said the wrong thing.
“A better version of you,” I finally spoke, the half truth however. “And not this evil person...how can you say such things about your mother?”
He gave a little snort. “I see that you are just like her, you never listen to instructions, do you?”
I shook my head and agreed with his claim.
“Well, you had better.”
I cocked one haughty brow at him. “Is that a threat I just received?”
“You can call it whatever you want,” he snapped. “This should be the last time you ever talk about taking over the throne and if one day, your grandfather ever proposed that you should, deny him.”
“And what if I don't?” I challenged, meeting him eyeball to eyeball.
He gave me a promising look, one corner of his lips curving into a sneer. “Then, we shall meet again. This time, there will be no survivors...”
His words hit me like a block of bricks had been dumped on my chest. My eyes widened in confusion, as my heart beat erratically in my chest. Just as my lips parted to ask him the one question that had left me perplexed, he vanished, leaving the space where he had stood a second ago, empty.
“Argh!” I groaned in frustration. I pulled at my hair which only made my already throbbing skull ache harder. All the questions I had wanted to ask were left unanswered and now, I had gotten another puzzle to unlock. I looked about the clear parting before me and far into the neighborhood. If I got on their land, I would attract unwanted attention and their Alpha would immediately sense me and return me back to Marcus.
So instead of doing that, I finally replied to the question Lily had asked earlier when she had contacted me through the link. She had said she heard what had happened from Marcus, and she asked where I was, begging not to be following any stranger anywhere.
I couldn't reply to her then because I was busy talking to my brother. I connected her back through the link: I am in the middle of nowhere, I don't know where to go and by the way, my evil brother left without me.
I waited for her to get back to me and she did in less than a minute. Then come back home, please. Stop acting like a child! You need to see Marcus, he is lost without you!
I sighed, wondering how the lost one hadn't even bothered to contact me yet. I thought of telling her that I didn't leave because I wanted to, I only left because I wanted Marcus to finally realize my worth, but I didn't. Instead, I asked her to help me with a place to stay and she gave me directions to her parents house, where her mother lived with her younger brother.
I huffed. “Here we go again, boom!” I vanished, leaving no trace of me but my lingering scent…
