Introduction

On the night we celebrated my acceptance to MIT, my boyfriend's female best friend crashed her car while driving drunk.

My boyfriend grabbed my hand to stop me from calling the cops. "Just say you were behind the wheel," he pleaded, dropping his voice. "Take the fall for her."

It was like this every single time.

Because I was independent and strong, I was the one who had to be sacrificed. I was always expected to step aside for the "fragile" girl.

Watching him frantically protect someone else, I suddenly realized how utterly pointless our eighteen years together had been.

I dialed 911 without hesitation, pulled off our matching ring, and walked away.

He thought I was just throwing a tantrum. He was dead certain that after a night's sleep, I’d wake up and make excuses for everyone, just like I always did.

That is, until he pushed open the door to our apartment and found that my half of the belongings—along with me—had completely vanished from his world.

Chapter 1

The crash came just as Emma was holding the cake box.

Minutes earlier, everyone had been toasting her full scholarship to MIT's aerospace engineering program. Caleb had his arm around her shoulder, saying that once they moved to Boston, they'd finally have a life that was truly theirs.

But now, Sloane's car was twisted into the rear of a silver sedan, shattered headlight glass scattered across the pavement.

Sloane stumbled out gripping the door, face pale, reeking of alcohol.

"I didn't see it." Her voice shook. "Caleb, I really didn't see it."

Emma set down the cake and pulled out her phone. "We need to call the police first."

Caleb pressed down on her hand.

"Wait."

"She's been drinking." Emma looked at him. "There are cameras nearby, and the owner could come back any second. If we report it now, at least it shows she didn't flee."

Hearing "police," Sloane's tears spilled immediately.

"I start at nursing school next month. If I have a DUI on my record, they'll revoke my acceptance." She clutched Caleb's sleeve. "I was just trying to move the car. I didn't mean to drive it."

Caleb murmured a few soothing words, then pulled Emma aside.

"You were driving."

Emma thought she'd misheard.

Caleb continued. "You didn't drink tonight, and your driving record's spotless. Just say you weren't paying attention while reversing. Insurance will handle it. The premium might go up a little, at most."

Emma stared at him. "You want me to take the fall for her?"

"Don't make it sound so serious. It's just a minor accident."

"She drove drunk and hit someone's car."

"That's exactly why she can't have a record!" Caleb lowered his voice. "You already have a full ride to MIT. One ordinary traffic incident won't affect that. But Sloane is different. She'll lose her nursing school acceptance."

There it was again. That line.

Sloane is different. Sloane is more fragile. Sloane can't handle it.

On prom night, Sloane had cried that her boyfriend dumped her, and Caleb ditched Emma to stay with her all night. On Emma's eighteenth birthday, Sloane claimed she was having a panic attack alone at home, and Caleb rushed over with the cake meant for Emma.

Every time, Emma told herself she was independent enough not to compete with someone who was falling apart.

Turned out her strength, in Caleb's eyes, wasn't a quality worth cherishing — it was a convenience he could overdraw again and again.

"And if I say no?" she asked.

Caleb frowned, as though he couldn't understand why she was complicating things.

"Emma, she really needs us."

"Needs us, or needs me to sacrifice?"

"Why do you have to twist it that way?" Impatience crept into his tone. "We've been together three years. Known each other eighteen. I know better than anyone how capable you are. This won't destroy you. But it will destroy her."

"So as long as I won't be immediately destroyed, I should bear her consequences?"

"That's not what I meant."

"But it's what you choose. Every time."

Sloane stood a few steps away, eyes red, watching them. Caleb glanced back at her, and his expression immediately softened.

That one look made Emma suddenly not want to fight anymore.

She pressed the emergency call button and spoke the address clearly.

Caleb's face drained of color. "Are you out of your mind?"

Emma ended the call and looked at him calmly.

"Caleb, we're breaking up."

Silence stretched for a few seconds.

He looked stunned at first, then actually laughed — as though relieved.

"You're too emotional right now. Once this is handled, we'll go home and talk."

"There's nothing to talk about."

"Emma." He reached for her. "Don't use a breakup to force me to pick sides. You know I can't just abandon Sloane."

Emma stepped back and smiled coldly.

"You already picked. A long time ago."

Sirens wailed in the distance. Sloane called Caleb's name frantically. He immediately turned and walked toward her, only leaving Emma with a parting line as he passed: "Go home and cool off. I'll bring you breakfast tomorrow."

His certainty was almost laughable.

He was sure she couldn't let go of three years together, much less eighteen years of companionship. Sure that after one night's sleep, she'd do what she'd always done — find excuses for everyone.

Emma looked down and removed the couple's ring she'd worn for three years.

A pale, thin mark remained on her finger.

She slipped the ring into her pocket and walked alone toward the parking lot. Behind her were Sloane's sobs and Caleb's gentle reassurances. But for the first time, she didn't look back.

And for the first time, she didn't cry.

I soon found myself lost in his arms.

When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.

The ballroom fell silent.

Was he about to kiss me?
