Chapter 1

If my editor doesn’t get off my back, I will just scream. He thinks I need to come up with a new angle for my travel section. I stomped around my apartment mad at my editor. I have no idea why he would think I need a new travel section since mine is charting. I will just do a new angle and see what he says about that, I said to myself. So I started pacing my living wondering what angle I should take on. Then I hear a knock at my door and I turn around quickly and almost fall. I catch myself and walk to the door. I delivery man. So I look through the peephole and see that is who it is. I open the door and then he asks.

“Is Ginger DeBree here I need her signature?”

“Yes, I’m here,” I replied. He handed me the clipboard to sign, and I signed it and handed it back. Then he gave me a big villain envelope. I watched him walk away and close the door, wondering who this could be from.

I sit on the couch and startan’t to open it and I still can’t think of anyone who would be sending me anything. I pulled out two tickets and a letter. So I looked at the letter stating that I won a cruise for two. I was trying to figure out how I won when I didn’t remember entering anything to win a cruise. It would work on two levels for me: a chance to do something different and the new angle I need for work. I could ask my sister Nigel to go with me and I would be able to have her point of view on the cruise as well. So there is that. It still has me wondering how I won but I will call in the morning to see if they are legit tickets and if they are I will ask my sister to tag along. After that, I will have to get it past my editor if this new angle will work. So, I cleaned up from my last trip out for work and started to fix something to eat when my phone rang. I picked it up and got ready to say hello when I heard a scream on the phone.

“Where have you been and are you just getting back?” My loud sister Nigel asked.

“I was going to call you after I ate something and now that I lost my hearing I see I should have called when I walked in the door,” I replied sarcastically.

“Don’t you get that tone with me? I’m your sister. I should be the first one you call, besides Mom

.” Nigel said flatly. “Look I haven’t been home that long, sister dear. Just long enough to clean up a little and fix me something to eat. Then you called me. I was going to call once I ate something.” I said.

“So how long are you home for?” Nigel asked me.

“For a few days. This means I have four days before heading to North Carolina to do some articles there, and then I will be gone for two weeks. Then I’m back for a few days. Then figuring my next move. I know there is something I need to talk to you and Mom about when I get the chance. I have some questions, "I told her on the phone.

“That’s why I’m calling Mom wants you to come over tomorrow for dinner,” replied Nigel. “Okay, that sounds great. I have to go and check on the article I sent to my editor. I will see you tomorrow.”

Then said goodbye and hung up the phone. Then, I went back to the kitchen to finish making my dinner.

Once I finished that I grabbed my laptop and opened up to see what my editor said about my new article. When I opened up he approved the article but said I needed to come up with a Bio for how the new website will be laid out. So I tried to figure out what I would say in my bio and came up empty. I found it hard to talk about myself and figure out what others would find interesting about me. I started to write things down to see if it sounded right.

Let me introduce myself. I'm Ginger Snapper, I’m twenty-five years of age. I work for Eclipse Magazine. I have been with the magazine for five years as well as my blog. I have been writing for as long as I can remember. I’m adopted and I have always known since I was five. For me, it was fine because I didn’t remember my parents, just that my mom now was my real mom’s best friend. I grew up in a loving home and was given what I needed in life to succeed. She gave me a chance to do what I love. She gave me a family and support to chase after my dreams. So I am grateful for all of that. So, I also volunteer as a meteor to young children in my free time to help give back.

As I look at the bio I wrote, I think it works for me. So I sent it to my boss to see what he thought, and I wanted to hear about it tomorrow. I did introduce myself. I said my name is Ginger Snapper. I am twenty-five years old, with an athletic build and light brown hair that is almost a dirty blonde. I mean what else is there besides saying how long I was with the magazine, what my hobbies were and interests? I think the only thing I didn’t put in there was that I was single because it felt too much like I was signing up for a dating site. While I was wondering if I did my bio correctly I heard a knock on my door.

I stood up and went to the door to see who was there. When I got to the door there was a note taped to my door. I looked in the hall to see if anyone was around, but there was no one. So I grabbed the note and went back inside my apartment. It was just a small note folded over a couple of times with nothing written on the outside of it. I unfolded the note and read the note and I was shocked at what I read.

“There is so much about yourself you don’t know. You need to start looking into where you come from. You're in danger and don’t know why you're in danger. You better start learning who you truly are before it's too late.”

There was no name to say who it was from, nothing to indicate why I was in danger, nothing about anything except that I needed to learn about myself. That had me wondering what I didn't know. Since I figured I would have to start with my adopted mother, then I would have to wait till dinner tomorrow. So I figured I would write down a bunch of questions that I should start with. Then mark off the ones I already know the answer to. That way I can hope to figure out what I don’t know about myself. Then I can figure out why I am in danger. I couldn’t figure out why someone would want to hurt me or if this could be some kind of joke.

I know my mother was killed in a freak accident and I never knew who my father was. I have a picture but I have never met him. I know I have a trust that I can use if I need it, but I have never touched it since I went to college. I only used what I needed to pay for college. I was adopted by my mother's best friend and raised with her daughter and we all except each other as family no half no step nothing just family. I am grateful for all that they have done for me. After giving this so much thought I didn’t realize it was dinner time and that I had emails to answer before bed. Time flew by with my mind going a mile a minute. So I get up to go fix myself some dinner and turn on my laptop to start looking at my emails. I heard back early from my editor about my bio. He said it would do, but I had better send him some new ideas about my travel page. Damn, he never lets up. Even when it’s my day off. He thinks I should work every day, but he is like that with everyone who works for him. Sometimes I think I should find a new magazine to work for. Dinner is done so I eat so I can get some work done and shower then go to the gym in the morning and to my mom’s house later on.

He grabbed my hair and dragged me downstairs. His grip on my hands and feet ached terribly. I sobbed and wept, silent tears streaming down my face. I was powerless to break free, my left hand clutching my broken right wrist.

He was a beast inhabiting this mansion, inflicting inhuman torture on my poor soul. He had created a living hell for me, this pitiful girl, within his castle.

On this cold winter night, he threw my wounded body into the icy pool, arrogantly enjoying it all, drinking and smoking expensive cigars. A satisfied, cold smile played on his lips as he reveled in my pain. His face was filled with the darkness of sin.

“How...more...am I…still…standing?” I stammered, my lips trembling.

Zain paused, thinking. Then, turning away from her, he replied:

“Until you die!”

With that, he left. As he wished. At that moment, my wish came true; I died.

But not in a frozen pool; I was struck in the head by a bullet from afar, blood splattering everywhere—that was far more gruesome.

My consciousness began to fade, but suddenly, I opened my eyes again and found myself mopping the floor in an ordinary restaurant.

I was startled: What happened? I was reborn? This is unbelievable!
