Sixty Days To Break You
godwinprec001 · Ongoing · 95.1k Words
Introduction
Basketball star. Student president. Untouchable. His name is engraved in bronze above every door she walks through. He's never had to try, never had to fight, never had to care. Then he tanks their chemistry experiment, and Nora's grade and her scholarship are suddenly at risk.
She wants revenge. She gets an ultimatum. Callum's father demands he find a girlfriend by the end of term, or one will be chosen for him. Nora needs protection from the committee that wants her gone. So they strike a deal: sixty days. Fake relationship. No feelings. Strictly business.
But Callum has secrets buried deeper than his family's money. And Nora is about to learn that the boy everyone thinks is unbreakable is already shattered.
She was supposed to play the girlfriend. She wasn't supposed to care. But sixty days is a long time to pretend. And some deals were meant to be broken.
Chapter 1
"Lab pairings are posted."
I hadn't even gotten my locker open yet. The combination was halfway in, my fingers cold from the early morning bus ride, when Zara appeared at my elbow like a ghost who'd been waiting for me to show up.
She had that look. The one she got when she'd been sitting on information overnight. Her eyes were too bright. Her mouth was twitching at the corner. She'd rehearsed her opening line at least twice, probably while walking past the science wing seven times just to double check what she already knew.
"Good morning, Zara."
"Ms. Chen put them up outside the lab. Last night after everyone left." She paused for dramatic effect. "I walked past it seven times this morning. Seven."
I turned and looked at her properly. "Why would you do that?"
"Because I thought my eyes were broken the first six times." She held out a folded piece of paper. Her handwriting was on it. Small and neat and very serious. "Station two. Bench four. Your name is next to two words. Two words that are going to ruin my whole semester and possibly my life."
I took the paper. Opened it. Read my name. Read the two words next to it.
Ashford, C.
I stared at the paper long enough that the letters started to blur. Then I looked at Zara. Then back at the paper. Then back at Zara.
"You're joking."
"Do I look like I'm joking?"
She didn't. Zara never looked like she was joking. That was the problem. She had the kind of face that made everything sound like a threat briefing. Which it usually was.
"Callum Ashford," I said. The name tasted like something I wasn't supposed to swallow. "Basketball star. Student Council president. Son of Richard Ashford who basically owns half the city and all of this school."
"And whose mother is dead and nobody talks about why. And who walks around here like gravity itself. And who has never once looked at anyone below the inner circle. And now you're stuck with him for eleven months of joint grades. Eleven months, Nora. That's the whole year. That's everything."
I pulled my arm free and spun my locker combination. Twenty three. Seven. Eleven. The lock clicked open. "So I'll do the work. I always do the work. Nothing new."
"That's not the point and you know it."
"Then what is the point, Zara?"
She stepped closer and lowered her voice. The hallway was filling up with students now, blazers and backpacks and the particular noise of rich kids who'd never had to be quiet anywhere. "The point is you've survived two years at this school by being invisible. You keep your head down. You sit in the back. You don't draw attention. Pairing with Callum Ashford is like setting off a flare gun in the middle of the cafeteria. Everyone is going to see you now."
"I didn't choose the pairing."
"It doesn't matter. Priya's already talking about it. I heard her this morning by the east corridor. She's telling people you arranged it somehow. That you're trying to climb the ladder. That you think you can get close to him because you have nothing to lose."
I slammed my locker. The sound echoed down the hallway. A few people glanced over. I didn't care. "I don't climb ladders. I don't try to get close to anyone. I survive. That's all I've ever done."
"Then survive this." Zara grabbed my arm again, harder this time. "Because Priya Shankar doesn't just gossip. She strategizes. Her mother sits on the scholarship board. She has power, and she's been circling Callum since freshman year. If she thinks you're in her way, even a little bit, she will destroy you. Not quietly. Publicly. So everyone watches."
"Then I'll be careful."
"You'd better be more than careful. You'd better be invisible again."
I nodded. But something in my chest had already shifted. I'd been invisible for two years. Invisible was exhausting. Invisible meant people like Callum Ashford could tank my grades and walk away without a scratch. Invisible meant nobody saw me coming.
Maybe it was time to be seen.
---
The science wing had his name above the door.
It wasn't a small plaque tucked beside a fire exit where you could walk past without really seeing it. Bronze. Uppercase. ASHFORD INSTITUTE OF SCIENCES. The letters were deep enough to trace with your fingertip if you were the kind of person who touched things like that. I wasn't. But I noticed it every morning the way you notice a bruise. Not because you're looking. Because your body already knows it's there.
I passed under it and walked into the lab. The room smelled like chemicals and floor polish and the faint electric hum of equipment that cost more than my mom made in a year. Tall windows lined the east wall, throwing strips of September light across the black tabletops. The other students were finding their stations, pairing off, laughing at things that probably weren't funny. Easy laughter. The kind you do when you've never had to worry about anything.
I found station two. Bench four. Sat down. Opened my notebook. Set out my pen like I was preparing for battle. Which, in a way, I was.
He got to class fourteen minutes before the bell.
I knew because I was counting. I was always counting. Minutes, points, margins of error. Counting was how I stayed alive at Harrow.
Callum Ashford moved through the room without acknowledging anyone. Not because he was rude. Because he didn't have to. People adjusted around him without appearing to notice they were doing it. A girl shifted her bag out of the aisle. A boy stepped back from the sink. He didn't ask. He didn't thank them. He just existed in the center of a space that had already been cleared for him.
He dropped onto the stool across from me without a word. No hello. No nod. No acknowledgment that I was a person sitting three feet away. He just opened a leather notebook with his initials embossed on the corner, C.A. in gold, and started reading something from a previous page. His brows were slightly drawn. His thumb traced back to cross check something he'd written earlier. Not performing. Actually reading.
I watched him for a moment. He was tall and broad shouldered, built like someone who'd been training since he could walk. His dark hair fell slightly over his forehead. His jaw looked carved. His uniform fit like it had been made for his body and only his body, which it probably had.
But it wasn't the looks that threw me. It was his stillness. He wasn't performing the way other rich kids performed. He wasn't loud or arrogant or obviously cruel. He was just quiet. Controlled. Like someone who'd learned a long time ago that silence was safer than volume. That attention was dangerous. That the best way to survive was to make yourself unreadable.
I recognized it because I did the same thing.
"I'm Nora," I said. "Your lab partner."
"I know."
Two syllables. Flat. He didn't look up from his notebook. Didn't pause. Didn't offer his name in return even though I clearly already knew it. Just kept reading like I wasn't worth the oxygen.
I waited. One second. Two. Three. Nothing.
"Okay then." I pulled my pen out of my bag. "Great talk. Really. I feel like we're really connecting here."
Nothing. Not even a twitch at the corner of his mouth.
Fine. If he wanted cold, I could do cold. I'd been doing cold since I stepped off the 5:47 bus freshman year with a scholarship letter in my backpack and hope in my teeth like something I was already prepared to lose.
Ms. Chen started class. She was a small woman with sharp eyes and a voice that carried across the room without needing to shout. She wrote the experiment on the board. Copper sulfate solution. Controlled reaction. Temperature recorded at ninety second intervals. Standard stuff.
I knew this lab. I'd done something similar at my old school on the east side. The one with cracked windows and Bunsen burners that barely worked and textbooks older than the teachers. I'd learned to be precise there because precise was the only argument I could make in a room that wasn't built for me. Precise was the only thing that couldn't be taken away.
Callum did his half of the setup like none of it mattered. He poured without measuring. Estimated instead of calculating. Checked his phone when Ms. Chen turned her back. Not carelessly, exactly. More like someone who'd never faced a consequence in his life. Someone who knew the rules bent around his last name because they always had.
I kept my eyes on my own side of the station. Recorded every interval. Held the thermometer steady. Wrote down every number in neat, careful rows. I told myself it was fine. It wasn't fine. But I told myself it was.
The reaction ran its course. The solution shifted from blue to pale green the way it was supposed to. I recorded the final temperature. Looked at the number.
My stomach dropped.
It was wrong. Not dramatically wrong. Not burn the lab down wrong. Just wrong enough. Wrong enough to get flagged for methodology. A flagged score meant docked points. Docked points meant my GPA crept toward the number printed in my scholarship agreement. The agreement I kept folded in my planner. The one with language about committee reviews and discretionary assessments. Carefully worded phrases that all translated to the same thing.
One more slip and we will find a reason.
I looked at his side of the notebook. Three intervals. Blank. No data. No recording. Nothing.
"You missed three intervals," I said.
He glanced at his notebook. Then at me. His eyes were gray. Or blue. Or somewhere in between. I couldn't tell in the lab light and I didn't want to stare long enough to find out.
"Yeah." He shrugged slightly. "The result still reflects the reaction."
"It reflects it badly. The methodology requires continuous data. That's the whole point of the lab."
"Then we lose methodology points."
He said it like he was discussing a parking ticket. A minor inconvenience. A rounding error in a life that had never known what it meant to lose anything that mattered.
I set my pen down. Very carefully. Because what I wanted to do was throw it at his perfectly carved jaw.
"Let me explain something." My voice came out low and steady. The kind of steady that takes effort. The kind you practice. "I'm on scholarship. You know what that means? It means I'm one bad grade away from a committee review. It means the people who decide whether I stay at this school don't need a good reason to send me home. They just need an excuse. And you just handed them one."
He went still. Not the fake still from before. The real kind. The kind where something shifts behind the eyes. A recalibration. Like I'd introduced a variable he hadn't planned for. Like nobody had ever said something like that to him in his entire life.
"Talk to Chen," he said. "If you're that concerned."
The bell rang. He capped his pen. Closed his notebook. Already somewhere else in his mind. Already done with the conversation. Already done with me.
"You're unbelievable."
He paused mid turn. Looked back. His eyes found mine. "What?"
"You heard me." I stood up and shoved my notebook into my bag. My hands were shaking slightly. I didn't care if he saw. "You tank an experiment I needed. You don't even pretend to apologize. And you think talk to Chen is going to fix anything? Chen reports to a board with your family's surname on it. I've read the policy documents. All of them. Every single page. Including the ones outside the department's jurisdiction."
He was watching me now. Actually watching. His full attention was on me for the first time since he'd sat down, and it felt like standing in a spotlight I hadn't asked for.
"You've been reading policy documents."
"I've been reading everything." I yanked my bag onto my shoulder. "So when I build my case, and I will build it, don't be surprised."
I walked out of the lab without looking back.
---
The hallway was empty. The bell had rung and everyone was already in their next class or at their lockers or somewhere far from me. I stood there for a moment, breathing hard, my heart pounding in my chest like I'd just run a race I didn't sign up for.
Outside the tall windows, the oak trees were shifting in the September wind. The leaves were starting to thin. The light was golden and soft and completely indifferent to everything that had just happened.
I'd been invisible at Harrow for two years. I'd hidden in the library third floor behind the periodical shelves. I'd kept my head down in the hallways. I'd swallowed every insult, every look, every quiet reminder that I didn't belong here. Because fighting back was a luxury I couldn't afford. Because invisible was safe.
But something had cracked open in that lab. Callum Ashford had looked at me like I mattered, even for a second. Like I was a variable he hadn't planned for. Like I might actually be a problem.
Good.
I pulled out my phone. Texted Zara.
I'm building a case.
Her reply came thirty seconds later.
Against who?
Everyone.

A PRINCESS IN DISGUISE; BOUND TO THE ENEMY KING
I fell to my knees, the cold marble digging into my skin. I had studied for years in the flickering candlelight, memorizing every herb and poison to pass the healer's exam. I wanted freedom. I wanted to save my mother from the servant's quarters. I placed second. I thought I had won my life back.
But the King didn't give me a badge of honor. He gave me a death sentence.
"Raven Thorne shall be wed to the King of Grok," he announced, his voice echoing in the silent hall. Princess Ellie, the woman who had tormented me for years, slapped her hands over her mouth to hide her cruel laughter. She was supposed to marry the Beast. Now, I was the lamb being sent to the slaughter in her place.
They say King Liam drinks the blood of his enemies. They say he is more monster than man. And now, I have to walk into his bedroom, wearing the Princess's silk gown, and pray he doesn't tear me apart.
I looked at the King, tears streaming down my face. "I'll do it," I whispered, my voice trembling. "But my mother must be safe."
I sold my body and soul to a monster to save her. But when the carriage door opened and I finally looked into the Beast's golden eyes, I realized the terrifying truth...
He wasn't a stranger. He was the man I met in the woods.
