Stop Making a Scene, He Said
Piper Hayes · Completed · 6.8k Words
Introduction
When he finally showed up, he was standing protectively at her side. Then he told me to “be reasonable and stop making a scene.”
In that moment, the love I’d held on to for twelve years simply disappeared.
I threw down my bouquet and called off the wedding right then and there.
Furious, he demanded, “You’re doing this because I was late?”
“Yes. Because you were late.”
Chapter 1
Serena's POV
On our wedding day, my fiancé left me and an entire room of guests waiting for two full hours so he could go to the airport and pick up the woman he’d never gotten over.
The ceremony should have started two hours ago.
I stood alone in my wedding dress behind the closed, ornately carved doors of a private club on the Upper East Side.
My bridesmaid Emily paced the hallway. Her phone screen lit up again and again, each call going straight to voicemail.
“Serena, Arthur’s assistant still can’t reach him. This is insane. Where the hell is he?” Emily kept her voice low, but she couldn’t hide her anger.
I stared at myself in the full-length mirror. My makeup was flawless, but there was no warmth left in my eyes.
“It’s fine. Let’s give him a little more time,” I said calmly.
Beyond the doors, the room was packed with Wall Street heavyweights, politicians, and generations of old-money friends and relatives from both our families.
Even through the heavy wooden doors, I could hear them whispering.
“Where is Arthur? This is his wedding.”
“I heard he went to the airport. JFK. Apparently, someone important needed him.”
“Who could possibly be more important than Serena on her wedding day? Poor Serena. She’s spent years chasing after Arthur, and he still humiliates her on their wedding day.”
I didn’t need to see their faces to feel their pity, their ridicule, or their eagerness to watch the drama unfold.
I tightened my grip on the bouquet. A thorn pressed through the ribbon and pierced my palm. The sting brought everything into sharp focus.
Then the elevator doors opened at the end of the hall.
Arthur stepped out.
He wore a black tuxedo, his bow tie slightly crooked and his hair tousled by the wind.
He wasn’t alone.
A tall woman in a khaki trench coat stood beside him.
Victoria.
She rolled a silver suitcase beside her. Her face was pale and her eyes were red. She looked delicate and shaken, like a lily barely holding up in a storm.
Arthur kept a protective hand on her shoulder. He leaned close as he spoke to her, his expression gentle and attentive.
It was the kind of tenderness I had dreamed of receiving from him for twelve years, but never had.
The moment Arthur saw me standing by the doors, he stopped.
He quickly pulled his hand away from Victoria’s shoulder. Then he frowned, already sounding annoyed.
“Serena, why are you still standing out here? The guests have been waiting. Come on, let’s go inside and get the ceremony started.”
No explanation. No apology.
As if leaving hundreds of guests and his bride waiting for two hours was nothing.
Emily shook with anger and stormed toward him.
“Arthur! Do you have any idea what time it is? You went to pick up Victoria and couldn’t even call? What kind of way is that to treat Serena?”
Victoria moved behind Arthur and bit her lip.
“I’m sorry, Serena. My flight from Paris was delayed, and then I couldn’t find my luggage after I landed. I was scared and alone at the airport, so I called Arthur. I had no idea this would delay your wedding. I’m so sorry.” She turned to him. “Arthur, go inside. Don’t worry about me.”
She apologized, but the smug look in her eyes told a different story.
She wanted me to know that all she had to do was call, and Arthur would come running.
Arthur immediately stepped in front of her. His voice hardened as he turned to me.
“Serena, Victoria just got back from Paris. She’s in a bad place right now. I just went to pick her up. We got stuck in traffic. There’s no reason for Emily to be yelling like this. Be reasonable and stop making a scene.”
Be reasonable.
Stop making a scene?
My groom had left me waiting for two hours on our wedding day so he could pick up another woman, and now he wanted me to be reasonable?
I looked at the man I had loved for twelve years.
I used to believe that if I stayed patient enough and gave him enough understanding, one day I would finally have his full attention.
But standing there, I finally understood that day would never come.
I took a breath and tossed my bouquet of white roses onto a nearby table. Petals scattered across the floor.
“We’re not going in,” I said, looking Arthur in the eye.
He stared at me. “What did you say?”
“I said we’re not going in. The wedding is off.”
Arthur’s face darkened. He stepped closer and lowered his voice.
“Serena, do you even know what you’re saying? Half of New York’s financial elite are sitting in there, along with both our families. Don’t make a scene over something this minor.”
“Something minor?” I gave him a bitter smile. “You really think this is no big deal?”
“Because I was late?” Arthur stared at me in disbelief and pointed toward the doors. “You’re calling off our entire wedding, after six months of planning, just because I was two hours late?”

Those words should have destroyed me, but the truth was worse: I'd been used as a broodmare by the man who swore to love me, set up in a hotel room with a stranger because My husband Alexander Cross couldn't father children himself, and now I carried the secret babies of Damon Lester—the most powerful and dangerous Alpha in San Loris—while my own family replaced me with the daughter they'd always wanted. Iron And Glamour Just Don't Mix
Well… Sometimes you just might turn out to be right.
It turns out, the fae stole my little brother. In his place? A pixie with boundary issues and a talent for home repairs.
I’ve spent my life taking care of everyone else. So when my baby brother is taken, I don’t hesitate. I walk straight into a faerie mansion and make a bargain with its infuriatingly charming master.
Kie is everything you’d expect from a dangerous fae, beautiful, political, and entirely too amused by me. Power wrapped in a smirk. Sensual, mischievous, and far too aware of the effect he has on people. He agrees to help me find my brother.
For a price.
Now I’m bound by a faerie bargain and navigating a world of glamour, manipulation, and ancient rules I definitely should have learned sooner, enchanted forests, political games, magical contracts, and a fae lord who treats seduction like a perfectly reasonable negotiation tactic.
Iron is how I keep people out.
Glamour is how he draws them in.
And apparently, they just don’t mix.

As they collide in a world where betrayal is constant and alliances are fragile, passion ignites between them, each step drawing them deeper into a forbidden obsession that neither can control. In a life defined by violence and survival, will their dangerous game be their undoing, or will it make them unstoppable?
