Introduction

A dash of sugar, a drop of starlight light, and a whole lot of magic.

Faelyn Greenbriar’s cozy cottage-bakery, Petal & Brew, is famous for its sweet treats and even sweeter spellwork. Whether it’s a batch of Calming Tartlets or a tea to mend a broken heart, her domestic magic always cures what ails you.
Until a ruined, broody stranger is blown straight through her front door.

Nigel Talbot—the Kingdom’s most feared, arrogant, and outrageously handsome Royal Sorcerer—has been hit with a dark curse that strips him of his high-tier spells. Hunted by the High Council and bleeding chaotic purple magic, his only chance at survival is hiding in the one place neutral enough to conceal his aura.

The catch? To stay off the Council's radar, the grand court mage has to pose as "Jules"—Faelyn’s hopelessly clumsy, flour-dusted kitchen assistant.

Now Nigel’s life is filled with complications. First, he’d better learn how to bake a proper batch of tarlets if he wants to impress his boss who he's falling hopelessly in love with.

While Nigel is used to precise, life-or-death potion scales, Faelyn’s magic is messy, intuitive, and powered purely by heart. Clashing over overflowing cauldrons, runaway dough, and a very judgmental house-goose named Gerald, the two couldn't be more different. But as they knead enchanted recipes and stir up secret brews, Nigel realizes his curse was no accident—and Faelyn discovers that a little bit of sugar might just break the darkest sorcery of all.

Chapter 1

The first customer of the day tried to pay with a goose.

"The sign says Tea. Sweets. Magic," Faelyn Greenbriar said to old Farmer Ernest, resting her hands on the counter. "Not Tea. Sweets. Poultry."

"It's barter day, dear," he said, as if that explained anything at all.

Faelyn stared at him and farmer Ernest stared back with the stubborn patience of a man who had spent seventy years arguing with weather, livestock, and occasionally his own wife.

Tucked beneath his arm was a wicker basket containing three turnips, a jar of questionable honey, and a goose that looked considerably more offended than either of them.

The goose stretched its long neck toward Faelyn and let out a sharp honk.

Gram had always taught her that kindness came first and questions later. So Faelyn sighed, softening her expression.

"Yes. But I'm afraid we don't have a pen for Gerald."

She took the goose anyway. His name was Gerald. Within minutes, he had taken up residence in the back garden, where he devoted his energy entirely to judging her through the window.

To be fair, Gerald wasn't the worst customer Faelyn had seen that week.

On Tuesday, a young knight-errant had brought in a broken heart, expecting a Solace Scone to mend three years of terrible communication.

On Wednesday, a local weaver had tried to trade a cursed spindle for a tin of Grief-Easing Chamomile.

A goose was manageable—even if he did glare through the glass like an aristocrat who’d been served cold broth.

Faelyn dusted her hands on her apron, the linen already powdered with flour and dried lavender, and turned back to the copper cauldron bubbling on the hearth.

Petal & Brew was her life, her sanctuary, and—if the flour-dusted beams overhead were any indication—her personal battleground against entropy.

Her magic wasn't the kind taught at the High Academy in the capital.

There were no flashy incantations, no summonings of lightning, nor transmutations of iron into gold.

Gram had taught her that real magic lived in the quiet spaces: in the exact moment sugar caramelizes, in the intent stirred into dough, and in the warmth that blooms in a person's chest when they drink tea brewed with genuine care.

Right then, she was working on a fresh batch of Calming Tartlets. The crust was flaky, enriched with sweet cream and a whisper of ground starlight-thyme, but the filling needed work.

Faelyn closed her eyes, holding her hands over the warm copper pot, and breathed in deeply.

She focused on the stillness of a morning after a storm, the gentle hum of summer bees, and the absolute peace of being safe at home.

A soft, rosy glow bled from her palms into the mixture, turning the blackberry-and-plum reduction a rich, luminescent purple.

"Perfect," she murmured.

Outside, however, the sky had decided on the exact opposite of calm.

The first warning had come shortly after noon, when the sunlight disappeared behind a thick bank of clouds. At the time, Faelyn had thought little of it.

Autumn storms were common in Elmswood, particularly when the winds rolled down from the northern mountains.

The wind had been howling ever since, but by late afternoon, the clouds turned a bruised, unnatural violet-black.

Thunder rolled, rattling the glass jars of dried rosehips and star anise lining her shelves. The sign hanging over the door thumped wildly against the outer oak frame.

A second rumble followed, deeper than the first, vibrating through the floorboards beneath her feet.

"Gerald, you better stay under the shed!" Faelyn called toward the back door.

A distant, disapproving honk confirmed that the goose was fine.

She moved to bolt the front shutter. The storm felt wrong. A metallic taste hung in the air—a sharp, heavy tang that smelled less like rain and more like raw, wild spellwork breaking apart at the seams.

Even the magic inside her seemed unsettled.

The warmth lingering in her fingertips had vanished. The enchanted jars on the shelves flickered faintly, their contents responding to something beyond her control

.

Slipping the heavy wooden deadbolt into place, Faelyn breathed a sigh of relief as the cozy scent of cinnamon, melted butter, and simmering fruit enveloped her again.

She wiped down the counter, adjusted a plate of fresh Forgiveness Scones, and turned back toward the hearth to ladle the plum glaze into a cooling bowl.

Then the world exploded.

A deafening, violent noise split the air as if the sky itself had ruptured. A blinding flash of purple lightning struck the cobblestone street directly outside.

The force blew the heavy oak front doors entirely off their hinges; iron latches shattered, wood splintered, and a howling gale of rain, cold wind, and smoke roared into the warm bakery.

Jars crashed from the shelves. Flour flew into the air in a blinding white cloud.

Faelyn screamed, dropping her ladle as a heavy figure was catapulted through the ruined doorway by the blast.

He skidded across the polished floorboards in a spray of rain, ash, and crackling energy, slamming directly into her and sweeping her legs out from under her.

They tumbled together into a heap of flour, spilled lavender, and thrown aprons.

The front of her corset dress soaked through instantly with rainwater and melted sugar. The acrid smell of burning ozone and dark, heavy alchemy filled the air, choking out the sweet scent of baking.

Faelyn’s head spun. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"What in the kingdom's name..." she gasped, coughing through the white haze settling around them.

She pushed herself up, her hands planted on a broad, soaked chest wrapped in ruined dark velvet and silver-threaded leather.

The man beneath her groaned—a sound raw and laced with pain.

Faelyn blinked, the flour dust clearing just enough for her to see his face.

He had dark, wet hair clinging to his forehead, sharp cheekbones smeared with soot, and a jawline set in a pained grimace.

When his heavy eyelids fluttered open, she found herself staring directly into a pair of striking dark violet eyes.
