Introduction
Three years inside those walls, and Elowen survived what shouldn't be survived. She came home expecting warmth, relief, maybe even gratitude for the sacrifice she'd made.
Instead, they looked at her with pity — like something hollowed out and broken beyond repair.
Her mate had moved on. Her fortune, gone. Her family whispered omega behind closed doors, certain the Hollow had ruined her.
They should have looked closer.
She thought she'd only been surviving. She didn't realize she'd become the kind of doctor who could do what no healer had ever done before.
But the worst part? She's learning that her skills can save bodies — but not the cursed prince rotting from the inside. Not the kingdom balanced on the edge of collapse.
For that, she'll need what the Hollow left inside her.
Something far more dangerous than medicine.
Chapter 1
Elowen
The miasma didn't let go of me until I'd crossed the last ridge separating the Death Hollow from everything else. Three years of breathing that gray, curling rot into my lungs every single day, and even now, with the gate finally behind me, I swore I could still taste it at the back of my throat.
A thousand and ninety-five days. I'd counted every one of them — gathering roots before the mist burned off, grinding them down until my knuckles split and healed wrong and split again, and somewhere in the middle of all that, hands steady enough that they stopped sending me to clean the table and started keeping me at it.
All of it ran together now, one long fever-dream of a life that wasn't mine. And all of it came down to this: a bag of my own tinctures riding against my hip the whole walk home, mixed with my own two hands, nothing anyone had asked me for. Just something I'd wanted to bring back. Something to show for it.
Then the scent hit me before the gate did.
Home. Pine sap and rain-soaked bark and something achingly, stupidly familiar buried under three years of the Hollow clinging to my skin like a second, uglier coat. I hadn't realized how much I'd missed it until it was right there, filling my lungs, until my chest actually hurt from breathing it in.
Then a voice, not bothering to lower itself. "Fuck—is that Elowen?"
"No way. No way she actually made it out."
I didn't turn around. Three years, more sickbeds than I could count—fevers that turned a man's veins black overnight, wounds that ate through flesh faster than any healer could close them, patients who screamed for hours and patients who went quiet in a way that was worse—had taught me exactly which kinds of pain deserved my attention. Gossip wasn't one of them. But my ears—omega-weak now, pathetically weak—still caught every word anyway.
"They say the dead go in and the dead come out. But the living ones don't make it back — not from that Hollow."
"And if one does — she's paid for it, mark my words. The Hollow Lord doesn't deal in coin. He carves his price straight out of the person. A memory, a gift, a piece of who you were before you walked through those gates. Sometimes he takes the whole thing and hands back something wearing your face."
"Whatever he took, that's her business, not ours. What I want to know is what he left her with. Smell her wolf. Rotted clean through. That used to be as strong as an alpha's, and now—"
"Every blade of grass in that hollow is poison. I'm amazed she isn't dead. Stay clear, just in case. Don't need whatever's rotting in that Hollow rubbing off on the rest of us."
I let a small, cold smile touch my mouth and kept my eyes forward. Let them talk. Idiots, all of them—worse than the way this pack usually looked at a lone wolf begging at the border, and I still didn't care. They had no idea what that hollow actually was, and even less idea that everything it took from me, I'd handed over willingly. Only my family would understand what three years like that actually cost.
I quickened my step. I just wanted to see them.
I heard them before I saw them—Celeste's laugh first, bright and easy, then my mother's voice scolding someone for tracking mud, then my father's low rumble of a chuckle. I came around the hedge and there they were, all three of them in the yard, golden in the late sun, my father swinging Celeste around by the arms like she weighed nothing, my mother swatting at both of them with a dish towel and failing to look annoyed about it.
My throat went tight.
Celeste looked good. Color in her cheeks. Steady on her feet. No trace of the girl who three years ago couldn't cross a room without her knees buckling, no trace of the sickness that had put a countdown on her life and put me on a wagon headed for the darkest place in the kingdom.
Good, I thought, and meant it, even through the ache. It worked. All of it worked. She's alive, and she's laughing, and she doesn't even remember what dying felt like.
I stepped through the gate.
The laughter didn't fade. It stopped. All at once, like someone had reached into the yard and switched it off.
I told myself I was imagining it. The sun was in my eyes. I blinked, and when I opened them again the three of them were still frozen, still staring, and none of the faces looking back at me were smiling anymore.
My father found his voice first, and it came out wrong—thin, guarded, like a man bracing for bad news he'd specifically arranged not to have to hear.
"Elowen. Why... why did you come back?"
Not relief. Not even shock, really. Something closer to a man doing math he didn't want to do.
"Dad." I tried for a laugh. It came out smaller than I wanted. "The three years are up. Today, remember?" I looked between them, waiting for it to click, waiting for the relief, the running-across-the-yard, the crying. "You didn't forget the date, did you?"
My father's face did something complicated and ugly, and in that half-second of watching him fumble for an answer, I made myself say it out loud—not for him. For me. Because some horrible, cowardly part of me needed to hear the shape of it before I'd believe he'd actually let it slip his mind.
"Three years ago Celeste got the wasting fever," I said, slow and careful, like I was explaining it to a child. "Nobody in this kingdom could touch it except the Hollow Lord. So we made a deal. I go work it off—three years, no contact, no questions—and he cures her." My eyes flicked to my sister, standing there glowing with health that used to be mine to worry about.
"I did that. Three years of the filthiest work in that place — hands split open from the grinding, blood up to my elbows at three in the morning, doing whatever I was told and never once saying no. I gave three years of my life so she could stand in this yard and laugh like nothing ever happened. And now it's today. The day I come home."
Silence. My mother's face had gone a blotchy, guilty red.
My father cleared his throat. "Right. Right, of course, my—my daughter." He nodded too many times, the way people do when they're buying seconds. "Things have just been—we've been so focused on Celeste's training lately, it must have slipped—"
"Haha, right, we did lose track of the date for a moment there." My mother's laugh came too fast, too bright. "But—well, everyone knows Vael is a devil, Elowen. We never actually thought he'd hold up his end. Men like that don't keep bargains. We assumed—"
She stopped. Something crossed her face—she'd heard herself.
"Wait." I stared at her. "What?"

The first half is set in high school, and the second half is set during their college years. Hope you enjoy the journey!
This is a slow-paced story, focused more on emotions, healing, and the small moments in life rather than intense action or dramatic twists.
If you find any mistakes while reading, please feel free to leave a comment. I’ll be happy to correct them.
I hope ordinary Clara, ordinary Adrian, and all of us ordinary people can find the happiness we deserve.

The media called it a scandal. They called us a divorced couple. But they didn't see the way Ethan trembled when I cornered him in the hallway afterward.
"You're staring again," he whispered, his back hitting the wall.
"You're still here," I replied calmly, stepping close enough to feel his erratic pulse.
He thought I was cold. He thought I was controlled. He didn't realize that every time he looked at me, I was fighting the urge to completely destroy the distance between us.
Now, the league is forcing us to live together, train together, and smile for the cameras to fix our public image. But the more time we spend alone in my apartment, the harder it is to pretend I just want to play hockey...
