Introduction
This is a very dark romance with a toxic, possessive male lead who gets worse as the story continues.
Expect: obsession, stalking, rape, body shaming, drug trafficking, murder, kidnapping, dubious consent, non-consent, graphic violence, rough/degrading sex, manipulation, and other heavy triggers.
The book gets darker and darker.
If any of these upset you, please do not read. This story is for adults who enjoy very dark themes only.
“You will always live in my dead wife’s shadow. I will never love you.”
Those were my husband’s first words to me on our wedding day. Not I love you. Not welcome home. Just a cold promise I would spend the rest of my life paying for a crime I didn’t commit.
And the worst part?
He was right.
I was deaf. Fat. Broken. Betrayed by everyone I had ever trusted. By the time Alexander Miller walked into my life, there wasn’t much of me left to destroy.
I thought marrying him would give me stability, a fresh start.
I didn’t know it would trap me in a house filled with a dead woman’s memories.
Every time he touched me, I felt it. Even when he was buried deep inside me, he whispered her name like I was just a substitute for the wife he lost.
All because I had her face.
And he believed I had taken her life.
He made sure I paid for it every single day.
And when he finally learned the truth…
I was already dead.
Chapter 1
RORY POV
"You're fired."
Two words.
Just two words and Mr. Smith had managed to destroy the last stable thing in my life.
I stared at his mouth, making sure I had read it correctly. I wasn't wearing my hearing aids today. I never wore them if I could help it.
But right now I was desperately wishing I had misread his lips.
I hadn't.
Two words I had been dreading since the day I started working here three years ago.
If I lost this job I would spend an eternity looking for another one. Nobody wanted to hire someone like me. Deaf. Occasionally mute.
A stammer that ambushed me at the worst possible moments, snagging sounds before they ever left my mouth.
I had learned to live with the ridicule that came with it but it never stopped stinging. Not once.
First it was Steve, my fiancé who had ended our engagement last week without a single explanation. He blocked me on everything and disappeared like three years meant nothing. Like I meant nothing.
And now this.
My boss was taking the last thing keeping me sane.
"Did you hear me?" Mr. Smith said. Then he caught himself and smiled at his own joke. "Or should I say did you read me?"
Nobody ever got tired of that one.
"I h-heard you."
The stammer hit the way it always did when I was tired or stressed. I hated that he could hear it.
Talking always hurt, every word felt like forcing something sharp through my throat.
But I refused to whisper. That was the one thing I refused.
"But I don't understand. What did I do w-rong?"
"You're a liability." He leaned back in his chair completely unbothered. "Customers complain every week. They say you ignore them."
"I don't ignore them." | kept my voice as steady as I could manage. "I'm deaf Mr. Smith. Not difficult. There's a difference."
"Is there?" He shrugged. "All I know is that it's affecting my business."
The unfairness of it sat in my chest like something heavy and hot.
I thought about every night I had spent in this bar.
Every customer who turned their face away mid sentence and left me guessing Every man who had grabbed at me, slapped and gripped my butt, sometimes my breasts, and every time I had gone to Mr. Smith's office shaking with anger only for him to wave me off. Repeating the same words, "Let them touch. They tip better. We get more customers." Like I was furniture. Like my body was part of the service.
And I stayed. Because I needed the money.
Because my mother was lying in a hospital bed and the bills didn't care about my dignity.
"Please." The word came out cracked and I
let it. My pride meant nothing right now.
"Three years. I have given you three years. I have never been late, I have covered shifts that weren't mine. Whatever the problem is, I will fix it. Please don't do this."
He said nothing for a long moment.
Then he stood up and walked around the desk toward me slowly. Like he had already decided how this was going to end.
"There is actually a way to fix it," he said, his voice dropping low, "I've brought it up before. You chose to ignore me." His eyes moved over me in a way that turned my stomach. "I'm giving you one last chance Aurora. Sleep with me and your job is safe.
Simple as that."
Of course.
This wasn't the first time.
Three weeks ago after closing he had stood exactly this close, said almost exactly these words. I had walked out that night and convinced myself it was an empty threat. That he wouldn't dare take it further.
I had been so wrong.
"No," I said.
"Aurora-"
"No."
He laughed.
I couldn't hear the sound but I could see it, his mouth wide, his tongue were visible, his shoulders bouncing. I imagined it was harsh and ugly. The kind of laugh meant to humiliate rather than amuse.
"Look at yourself," he said. "You're deaf, you're mute half of the time. You can barely string a sentence together without breaking down.”
His eyes dragged over my body slowly and deliberately. "Walking around here with all that fat and loose skin and you think you have options? You think you can say no to me?"
Something inside my chest cracked open quietly.
"And every time those men touched you," he continued, "every time you came crying to my office, did you really think I was going to choose you over paying customers?" He stepped closer. "You were never the asset here Aurora. You were the inconvenience I tolerated."
I tried to speak.
I pushed hard for the words the way I always had to, the way that scraped my throat raw and left my hands trembling. But the humiliation had wrapped itself around everything and squeezed until there was nothing left.
My hands moved on their own, signing 'please let me keep my job. I will do better.'
He watched my hands with amusement.
It was useless. He didn't understand.
"Even your fiancé figured out you weren't
worth it. He packed up and left without a word, didn't he? Can you blame him?"
I opened my mouth.
Nothing came out.
Not a single word. The emotion had wrapped itself around my voice and squeezed everything out the way it sometimes did on the worst days.
I picked up my bag.
I turned toward the door.
A very loud knock on the desk stopped me.
The kind that said turn around without
saying a word.
I turned around.
His smile was wide and slow and completely without shame.
"Your ex fiancé is getting married tomorrow." He tilted his head. "You should definitely attend."
The words hit me somewhere I didn't have a name for.
It doesn't really get better, does it?

He Never Loved Me, Until I Left
I put away the divorce agreement with a wry smile.
When he and my son completely disappeared, he finally panicked.
Three months later .
He knelt down on the streets of Chicago in despair, begging me to remarry him.
My six-year-old son looked coldly at his biological father and said, "Get lost, you bad uncle! You don't deserve to be my dad!"
When I Disappeared, He Regretted It
The moment the screen lit up, my entire world came crashing down.
The woman on the bed was Calista - that girl who grew up with us since we were kids. And that hand caressing her skin was wearing the wedding ring I had personally put on Matteo's finger.
"I've missed you so much..."
"You drive me crazy, baby..."
Those sweet words I knew so well completely destroyed me.
Everyone said we were the perfect couple, but who knew this marriage was built on nothing but lies?

I Loved You in Silence, You Betrayed Me in French
At my birthday party, my husband whispered to his mistress in French that he missed her. His voice was low, but I heard it all—the black lingerie, the bit about how pregnancy makes you more sensitive. His French clients around us were laughing. He turned and put his arm around me, claiming he was just helping his clients come up with sweet nothings.
He doesn't know I understand every single word. Just like he doesn't know that inside my body, I'm carrying his other surprise. And his mistress—she's pregnant too. Two wombs, one secret.
Confrontation would be too cheap. Tears are worthless. I quietly started cataloging the hidden networks my father left behind, activating the Swiss accounts.
In seven days, Zoey Smith will cease to exist. And what will my husband's reaction be?
Alpha Nicholas's Little Mate
What? No—wait… oh Moon Goddess, no.
Please tell me you're joking, Lex.
But she's not. I can feel her excitement bubbling under my skin, while all I feel is dread.
We turn the corner, and the scent hits me like a punch to the chest—cinnamon and something impossibly warm. My eyes scan the room until they land on him. Tall. Commanding. Beautiful.
And then, just as quickly… he sees me.
His expression twists.
"Fuck no."
He turns—and runs.
My mate sees me and runs.

After the Affair: Falling into a Billionaire's Arms
From first crush to wedding vows, George Capulet and I had been inseparable. But in our seventh year of marriage, he began an affair with his secretary.
On my birthday, he took her on vacation. On our anniversary, he brought her to our home and made love to her in our bed...
Heartbroken, I tricked him into signing divorce papers.
George remained unconcerned, convinced I would never leave him.
His deceptions continued until the day the divorce was finalized. I threw the papers in his face: "George Capulet, from this moment on, get out of my life!"
Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."
Oops, Wrong Girl to Bully
My back hit the desk. Pain exploded through my skull.
"Girls like you don't get to dream about guys like Kai." Bella's breath was hot on my face. "You don't get to write pathetic love letters."
She shoved me again. Harder.
"Maybe if you weren't such a desperate little—"
I fell. My head cracked against the corner.
Warmth trickled down my neck. Blood.
Their laughter turned to gasps.
The door slammed.
I tried to stand. Couldn't. The room was spinning, fading to black.
Someone... please...
