Bae In Biz · Ongoing · 151.5k Words
Introduction
To everyone’s surprise, Lily instantly forms a strong bond with Melissa, something she has never done with anyone before. Later on, Williams finds out about Melissa's criminal records, and he tries to send her back, but his daughter Lily refuses to let Melissa go. Reluctantly, William allows Melissa to stay, though he remains suspicious of her past. As Melissa cares for Lily, warmth slowly returns to the once-lonely mansion, and William begins to see Melissa not as a criminal but as a compassionate woman hiding deep pain.
Years earlier, a single night between them led to a pregnancy; she barely remembered who she had spent a night with—a chain of betrayals that destroyed Melissa’s life. Now, powerful secrets threaten to surface, secrets controlled by William’s mother, Scarlet Hill, who will do anything to protect the family’s reputation.
As love begins to grow, the truth about Melissa’s lost child may either unite them… or tear their world apart forever.
Chapter 1
The first time Melissa felt the baby kick, she was staring at a crack in the prison ceiling. It was small and fragile like a whisper inside her.
Nine months ago, Melissa had walked into the prison in handcuffs. She was betrayed, but still believed in love.
She pressed a protective palm over her growing belly and smiled through the grey walls of the women’s correctional facility in New York City.
Ben was coming, her fiancé, the father of her child, and the man who promised her this was temporary.
Take the fall, Melissa. I will fix it, I will get you out, I will marry you, and we will start fresh. She had repeated those words like a prayer every night.
“Melissa Carter. Visitation.”
Her heart leapt.
She stood slowly and carefully with her movements. Pregnancy in prison was not something they prepared you for.
The stares, the whispers, and the loneliness, but today didn’t matter.
Today, her baby would “meet” its father.
The visitation room smelled like disinfectant and the lingering scent of old regret. The air felt like it was running out.
The prison guard stood just a few feet behind Melissa, with his arms crossed.
She sat on a cold metal stool that was bolted to the floor, her hands resting on a scratched plastic laminate table.
And then she saw him.
Ben Harrison. He was tall, composed, and dressed in a polished linen suit.
He wore the same effortless charm in his smile, the one that had once convinced her she was the luckiest woman on earth.
But he did not come alone.
Linda Cross swept in at his side, perfectly styled hair, designer heels, and a diamond ring on her finger.
Melissa blinked twice. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing.
Linda had always been part of their circle, beautiful, ambitious, and calculating. But the way she clung to Ben’s arm wasn’t friendly; it was possessive.
Ben sat down across from Mellisa, separated by a scratched glass divider.
Linda didn’t sit. She stood beside him and claimed him. Melissa swallowed the unease rising in her throat.
“You came,” she whispered, her fingers brushing the glass. “I was so worried. The baby’s growing fast. I can’t wait for you to feel.”
Ben didn’t smile; he didn’t even look at her stomach. His expression was distant and detached.
“Melissa,” he said flatly, “we need to talk.”
Her smile faltered.
“Of course. Did the lawyer file the papers? You said I’d be out before the second trimester, we can still have the wedding before the baby comes.”
Linda laughed softly. Ben leaned back in his chair. “There’s not going to be a wedding.”
The words didn’t register at first.
“What?” Melissa suddenly felt suffocated.
“I’m not the father of that child.”
A dead, heavy silence slammed into the space between them. Melissa's hand froze against the glass.
“That’s not funny, Ben.”
Her pulse pounded in her ears. “You were there. That night.”
“That night,” Linda interrupted smoothly, “wasn’t just about you.”
Melissa turned to her, very confused.
Ben exhaled impatiently. “The man you had that one-night stand with? The one you conveniently forgot about? He paid very well.”
The room tilted. “What are you talking about?”
Ben’s eyes hardened. “I dosed and sold you out to the highest bidder, Melissa.”
The words were calm and clinical, as if he were discussing business.
“Someone powerful needed a fall girl for a financial scandal. You were perfect, clean record, emotional, and easy to manipulate.”
Her respiration turned shallow and clipped a desperate, rhythmic panting that signaled her breaking point.
“You said if I confessed, you’d bail me out.”
“Yes,” he replied. “And you believed me.”
Linda finally slid into the chair beside him, flashing her ring under the fluorescent lights.
“ Ben was never yours; he was only using you to take the fall, and by the way, we’re engaged,” she said sweetly. “It was all arranged months ago.”
Melissa's world was shattered.
“You… you planned this?” Her voice broke.
Ben shrugged. “The highest bidder wanted you silenced. Pregnant or not, it didn’t matter. You were disposable.”
Her hands trembled violently now, instinctively moving to shield her stomach.
“You said you loved me.”
Linda’s smile widened. “Love doesn’t build empires. Strategy does.”
Melissa stared at Ben, searching desperately for the man she once knew.
He was gone, or maybe he never existed.
“So the baby…” she whispered.
“Not mine,” he replied coldly. “And frankly? I don’t care whose it is.”
Something inside her cracked, but it wasn’t weakness.
It was an illusion.
“You promised to get me out of prison as soon as I confessed.”
Ben stood up. “There’s no bailout and appeal. You’ll serve your sentence, Melissa.”
Linda rose beside him, looping her arm through his.
“You should be grateful,” Linda added softly. “Prison will keep you far away from things you wouldn’t survive out here.”
Guards signaled the visit was over.
Melissa sat there, lost in thought.
She didn’t scream; she simply sat there, one hand over her belly, as she saw the two people she trusted most walk away without looking back.
Suddenly, Melissa’s water broke. She was in active labour.
Tears finally slipped down her cheeks, not for Ben, not for the betrayal, but for the life that was to come.
Two female police officers ran and held her up, and she was rushed to the facility's Health Centre.
Melissa was immediately taken to the delivery room.
And somewhere beyond those walls, the powerful man responsible for that one reckless night had no idea that the woman carrying his child had just lost everything.
