Introduction

For ten years, Blair drew only black stones from the moonbone box. Her pack called it the Moon Goddess’ will. Her parents told her she was simply unlucky, while every whitestone reward went straight to her favoured younger sister Luna. On her twelfth birthday, she died locked behind a bedroom door. Trapped as a ghost, she watched her family carry on without her—until she uncovered the brutal truth: there had never been any white stones inside the box. It was all a lie built to justify their favouritism. This is not a revenge story. It is the slow, crushing aftermath of a family’s belated regret, when remorse comes far too late to bring the forgotten daughter home.

Chapter 1

The night Luna was born, her newborn fur hadn't even dried before it began to gleam with a luminescent silver-white light—a coat untraced in our pack's bloodline for generations. Mother said she wanted to ensure her love remained "fair." So, she brought home the Moonbone Casket.

Who got the most tender cuts of venison tenderloin? Draw a bone. Who received a proud nuzzle to the scent gland, or an Alpha's praise in front of the pack? Draw a bone.

There were only two outcomes: Whitebone, or Blackbone. Every time I dipped my claws into the casket, I pulled out black. The Whitebone defaulted to Luna—she never even had to extend a paw.

Whenever the suffocating unfairness swelled into a low growl in my throat, Mother’s amber pupils would narrow into dangerous slits.

"I presented this casket so you wouldn't feel wronged, Briar," she’d lecture coldly. "Everything is dictated by the Moon Goddess's will. If you can't pull a Whitebone, you only have your own blood's bad luck to blame."

So, day after day, I practiced the feel of the stones against my claws. Under the full moon, I stared out the window and prayed, desperately hoping their gaze would land on me just once, instead of passing right over me to that shimmering silver coat.

For ten years, I never drew a Whitebone. Not once.

Until my twelfth birthday. It was the night of the Voss family’s annual Hearth Oath. Whoever drew the Whitebone would have their paws held by our parents in front of the entire household, listening to the ancient vow: I acknowledge your scent. You are the pride of this pack.

Those words had never fallen upon me.

So, I rigged it. I polished a river stone, coated it in white chalk dust, and hid it in my sleeve, hoping to swap it in the dark.

But Mother had the sharp, unforgiving nose of a Beta. She smelled the chalk dust from half a meter away. Instantly, her ears pinned flat against her skull, and her lips peeled back to bare her fangs. "You dare lie to me? You want to desecrate a sacred oath?"

A brutal backhand struck me, carrying the heavy wind of her claws. I crashed hard onto my side. By the fireplace, Garrick’s hackles rose and immediately fell back down. He didn't make a single move to stop her.

Freya grabbed me by the scruff of my neck, carrying me like a disobedient, worthless pup. She dragged me down the long corridor while Luna whimpered softly behind us.

She hurled me into my bedroom. "Stay in there until you remember your place!"

I stumbled. My feet tangled, and my skull slammed violently into the brass-bound corner of Grandmother’s antique cedar chest at the foot of my bed.

The heavy door slammed shut. The lock clicked.

Curled on the floor, my vision blurring, my last pathetic thought was: I'm sorry, Mom. Next time, I’ll pull the Whitebone.

Something uncomfortably warm was dripping down my scruff, pooling on the floorboards with the heavy, metallic stench of iron.

The floor is getting dirty. Mom is going to be so furious.

I reached out to wipe it up, but my claws passed straight through the solid wood.

Oh. I was dead.

When I was seven years old, Grandmother had collapsed exactly like this, leaving not a single scratch mark of struggle on the floor. She and Mother had been baring their teeth at each other in the living room, tails stiff with aggression, all over that cursed casket.

"Love is just love!" Grandmother’s roar had vibrated through the floorboards. "You don't want to admit you play favorites, so you hide behind a pile of bones! Throw it in the fire and let them both hurt, let them both be loved!"

"How I raise my pups is none of your concern," Freya shot back smoothly, her tail not even twitching. "Favoritism is an instinct etched into a wolf's very bloodline—no wolf can truly overcome it. That is exactly why I enabled this casket, for absolute fairness. Every ounce of affection they receive is won through the will of the Moon Goddess. If Briar consistently fails to draw a Whitebone, it only proves this is her inherent fate."

That sheer, terrifying arrogance gave Grandmother a massive stroke. She never woke up. I had knelt beside her body, pressing my claws gently under her nose, waiting for a breath. I didn't get one. I hadn't cried. The fur across my entire body had just bristled, before slowly, numbly flattening down.

After Grandmother was buried, the shadow of the casket only grew longer.

Two imported Moon-Elk tenderloins left on the counter? Draw a bone. I pulled black. Both went to Luna.

What's for dinner? Draw a bone. Black meant the whole table was filled with Luna's favorites, completely ignoring the fact that the herb sauce caused my pelt to break out in severe hives.

"It’s the Goddess's will," Mother would sigh, her tail flicking lazily across the floor. "You're the one who pulled the Blackbone."

Once, my stomach cramped so violently I rolled on the floor in agony, crying and begging for her to nuzzle me. She still made me draw a bone first.

Black again. She turned her back and buried her snout deeply into Luna's silver fur instead.

"Briar, your luck is just tragically terrible."

My entire life had been crushed, piece by piece, by those bones.

And yet, even now, floating above my own cooling corpse, my mind still lingered on the draw.

Grandmother’s coffin had been lined with plush velvet, carrying the rich scent of cedar and pine resin. The whole pack had praised Freya for her filial devotion to the Elders.

I wanted a resting place like that. For five years, I had slept curled on a mattress so narrow my hind legs had never once fully stretched out.

Maybe, I thought, I could drift through the wall and find Mother. I could beg her to let me draw one last time. If it was Whitebone this time... would she finally be willing to bury me in a casket where I could lie flat?

My soul drifted toward the locked door. Suddenly, footsteps echoed in the hallway.

My transparent ears instantly perked up. A wave of desperate, urgent hope swelled in my hollow chest.

The doorknob turned. Mother pushed the door open.

"Big Kai?"

He didn't respond but moved his eyes around the room, scanning the place.

"Wha...what are you doing here?"

His icy blue eyes returned to me, sending shivers down my spine. Then further dropped to my dress and then back to my eyes.

"The shit going on downstairs, what does it mean?" he asked, making my legs as weak as they are eager to flee.

"It's....it my wedding,"

He scoffed darkly. "Excuse me?"

I swallowed. "I am......getting married,"

He let out a humorless laugh, looking away and giving me lesser comfort. He looked at me with a demonic frown.

Terror washed me.
