Introduction

Strictly professional. Totally invisible. That was Jane's life... until one wild night, two glasses of wine, and the worst mix-up of her career.

For two years, Jane Pascual kept her head down, her gray suits buttoned tight, and her personal life strictly off the clock. In a company where previous secretaries were fired for blinking too flirtatiously at ruthless CEO William Reynold, Jane’s icy, boring persona made her untouchable.

Until one mistake shattered everything.

When William opens a misplaced birthday gift the next morning, he doesn't find a file. He finds a pair of red lacy panties and a steamy, signed confession meant for someone else entirely. Suddenly, the cold boss is intensely fascinated by his boring secretary, and determined to uncover every secret she’s hiding.

But Jane's biggest secret isn't her hidden passion. It's a five-year-old son from a single, anonymous night… a night William remembers only by a tiny apple tattoo. As misunderstandings pile up, will William discover that the one secret she's guarding with her life is his?

Chapter 1

The rain in Manhattan fell in heavy, rhythmic sheets, painting the floor-to-ceiling glass of the Reynold Building in shades of dreary slate.

Jane Pascual stepped into the gleaming lobby, shaking out her black umbrella ten minutes ahead of schedule and suppressing a satisfied grin.

Tonight, her best friend Allan Kim, HR manager by day, a Korean dramatic wine enthusiast by night, was turning twenty-five. They had a proper girls’ night planned, complete with trashy TV, takeout, and enough cheap champagne to forget the existential dread of adulthood.

The other birthday boy was William Reynold. The big boss was turning thirty, a milestone he had explicitly ordered everyone to ignore. To William, birthdays were a meaningless waste of billable hours. Meetings were what mattered. Deals. Numbers. Dominance.

Jane had survived as his executive secretary for two full years, a feat that rendered her a mythical creature to the rest of the building. Life here was a daily masterclass in stress management.

William didn't just manage; he ruled. He called her Miss Pascual with the warmth of a frozen steel pipe, once threw an entire pitch deck into the trash because the font was two points off, and practically snarled whenever his morning espresso wasn't served at precisely 160 degrees.

The previous secretaries had lasted three weeks tops. They made the fatal mistake of batting their eyelashes, wearing hemlines three inches above the knee, and treating the CEO like a prize to be won.

Jane was smarter. She weaponized boredom. Every morning, she put on her armor: a baggy gray suit, a scraped-back bun, zero makeup, and an expression of pure, unbothered neutrality.

She was a ghost in a blazer, completely immune to his lethal jawline and icy blue eyes. She had student loans to clear, and this ghost needed a paycheck.

By 6:00 PM, the VIP executive floor was buzzing. Under the guise of a spontaneous department toast, a small spread of top-shelf liquor had been arranged in the grand parlor.

William tolerated the gathering for exactly sixty minutes, standing by the window with a glass of neat scotch, looking like a dark god trapped among mortals.

He made brief, clipped small talk, ignored the faint atmosphere of celebration, and vanished back into his corner office without a word.

The moment he left, the real drinking began.

"To surviving another year of the tyrant!" an associate cheered, handing Jane a crystal glass filled with a deep, vintage red.

She usually held a strict one-drink limit, but the pressure of the workweek, combined with the anticipation of Allan’s party, made her reckless.

Two glasses of thousand-dollar Cabernet hit her empty stomach like a velvet sledgehammer. Her cheeks flushed hot, the edges of her vision blurred, and a sudden, giddy bravery took root in her chest.

Right. The gifts.

Jane swayed slightly as she navigated back to her desk. She had two small, beautifully wrapped boxes in her drawer.

One was a safe, deeply uninspired silk necktie in charcoal gray, the ultimate neutral offering for a boss who possessed no soul.

The second was for Allan. As a closeted gay man raised by a hyper-conservative Catholic family, Allan lived in constant fear of being exposed, so Jane had bought him a gag gift to mock his secret alter-ego: a fiery red box containing a pair of scandalous lace panties, accompanied by a teasing, ridiculous love note she’d scribbled while half-asleep: "Happy Birthday Handsome, please date me. I've been in love with you for so long -muaah---Jane." She’d even stamped it with a dramatic, bright pink lipstick kiss for maximum dramatic effect.

Dizzy and giggling to herself, Jane grabbed one of the boxes, marched straight into William’s darkened private office, and set it squarely in the center of his mahogany desk.

"Happy birthday, you miserable billionaire," she muttered under her breath, smirking as she turned on her heel and stumbled toward the elevators to find Allan.

She was ready to get completely wasted. She was ready for the weekend. What she didn't realize, as the elevator doors slid shut behind her laughing frame, was that the box sitting on William Reynold's desk wasn't the charcoal tie.

It was the red one.

An hour after escaping the trivial surprise gathering his VIP staff threw, William was standing in his private executive suite, adjusting the cuff of his dark designer jacket. Socializing wasn't beneath him, but efficiency was his religion.

A multi-million-dollar acquisition call took priority over forced small talk and lukewarm champagne.

Now, he was heading down to the family estate for another intolerable dinner, fully prepared for his mother to bug him about his lack of a wife.

At thirty, he had no intention of rushing toward the altar. He was a man of absolute wealth and calculated control; dates were merely temporary arrangements, lasting a few days or weeks at most.

Relationships were a game, but a man like him still had basic physical needs. He took what he wanted, gave nothing away, and moved on.

Before taking the private elevator down to his car, William circled back to his main office to grab a financial ledger he needed to review at his penthouse.

That was when he saw it.

Sitting smack in the middle of his dark mahogany desk was a small, vibrant red box. He stopped in his tracks, his eyebrows knitting together in immediate suspicion.

He knew for a fact who placed it there. Jane Pascual. His stone-faced, terribly boring secretary who hadn't cracked a smile in two full years.

She treated him with the exact same emotional warmth as a blank concrete wall. She never blushed, never fidgeted, and looked at him with flat, icy gray eyes, a quality he had found immensely refreshing when he hired her over the sea of airheaded, mini-skirt-wearing barbies trying to flirt their way into his inner circle. Jane was a machine in a dull, boring looking suit.

William scoffed softly, picking up the box. He would have bet his entire portfolio that inside sat another useless silver necktie, completely devoid of personality, just like the woman who bought it. Might as well unwrap the tedious thing, he thought, pulling off the ribbon.

He lifted the lid. His breath hitched in his throat.

Holy shit.

He froze. His eyes widened as he stared down into the box, his brain completely refusing to process the contents. He closed the lid, opened it again, and pulled out a sheer, scandalous scrap of red lace. Tucked beneath it was a small white card.

He read the handwriting once. Twice. Five times.

“Happy Birthday Handsome, please date me. I've been in love with you for so long -muaah---Jane.”

Right beside her signature was the unmistakable, perfectly stamped imprint of a bold, hot-pink lipstick kiss.

What the actual fuck?

For five solid minutes, the quiet of his office was broken only by the sharp thud of his leather shoes as he paced the floorboards, holding the scandalously light piece of fabric in one hand and the note in the other.

Jane Pascual? His Jane? The woman who wore the same atrocious gray suit every single day? The woman who scraped her hair back so tightly it looked painful? The woman who sat silently while he raised his voice over tepid coffee and pushed her through grueling twelve-hour workdays?

She was in love with him. For two long, agonized years, she had been pining for him from behind her dreary desk.

A slow, dangerous smirk began to carve its way onto his face. The absolute sheer restraint the woman possessed was staggering.

She had played the unbothered, frigid assistant so flawlessly, suppressing her burning passion just to stay close to him. She was terrified of getting fired like the rest, so she hid her desires beneath layers of wool and silence, until two glasses of wine shattered her composure.

"Oh, Jane..." he murmured aloud, tracing the pink lipstick imprint with the pad of his thumb. His ego swelled, a dark, intoxicating heat blooming in his chest. "You absolute hypocrite. You quiet, brilliant little liar."

She wasn't a stone wall at all. Beneath that awful gray blazer was a woman burning alive for her boss.

Carefully folding the lace, William slipped the sheer fabric and the note into the inner pocket of his tailored suit, right over his heart.

He exited his office, noticing that the distant sounds of laughter and clinking glasses were still echoing from the HR department's wing down the hall.

He didn't care about the noise. He stepped into the private executive elevator, leaning back against the mirrored wall as the doors slid shut. His reflection showed a man who had just won a game he didn't even know he was playing.

Monday morning couldn't come fast enough. He was going to enjoy every single second of stripping away Miss Pascual's boring little disguise.

He grabbed my hair and dragged me downstairs. His grip on my hands and feet ached terribly. I sobbed and wept, silent tears streaming down my face. I was powerless to break free, my left hand clutching my broken right wrist.

He was a beast inhabiting this mansion, inflicting inhuman torture on my poor soul. He had created a living hell for me, this pitiful girl, within his castle.

On this cold winter night, he threw my wounded body into the icy pool, arrogantly enjoying it all, drinking and smoking expensive cigars. A satisfied, cold smile played on his lips as he reveled in my pain. His face was filled with the darkness of sin.

“How...more...am I…still…standing?” I stammered, my lips trembling.

Zain paused, thinking. Then, turning away from her, he replied:

“Until you die!”

With that, he left. As he wished. At that moment, my wish came true; I died.

But not in a frozen pool; I was struck in the head by a bullet from afar, blood splattering everywhere—that was far more gruesome.

My consciousness began to fade, but suddenly, I opened my eyes again and found myself mopping the floor in an ordinary restaurant.

I was startled: What happened? I was reborn? This is unbelievable!
