Introduction
Chapter 1
Holly Winters has always hated Christmas. While all around her became a glittering wonderland of lights and laughter, she submerged herself in deadlines, empty bank accounts, and memories she preferred to forget. Her small apartment in the center of the city had no traces of decorations; there was a single snow globe that she was too weak-hearted to get rid of.
It was on this very evening that Holly came home after another tiring day at The Daily Chronicle, where she worked as a junior journalist. The editor-in-chief had reprimanded her for missing a typo in her latest article—a piece she had written overnight on an empty stomach. Tiredness weighed upon her, but something caught her eye as she approached her door: a red envelope sitting on her doormat.
Her brows knitted in confusion. She wasn't expecting mail, much less one that looked so ornate. The envelope was sealed with gold wax stamped with a snowflake emblem.
She picked it up carefully, turning it over in her hands. There was no return address, only her name in elegant cursive: Ms. Holly Winters.
Curiosity got the better of her. She stepped inside, tossed her bag onto the couch, and tore open the envelope. Inside was an invitation on thick, ivory cardstock:
You are cordially invited to the Annual Christmas Gala at Victor Noel's Mansion.
Date: December 22nd | Time: 8 PM
Dress Code: Festive Formal
A car will arrive to pick you up at 6 PM.
At the bottom of the invitation, a handwritten note read:
Uncover the secret before Christmas Eve, or all will be lost.
Holly's heart was racing as she read the note again and again. What secret? Why her? She had never met Victor Noel, though she had heard the name whispered in hushed tones around the city. The reclusive billionaire was famous for his lavish Christmas celebrations and infamous for his mysterious disappearances from the public eye.
Holly had been a journalist for years, running after stories that went nowhere. But this was different. This was not an opportunity; this was a challenge.
Then, the doubts began to creep in. Was this some kind of prank? And why would Victor Noel, the man who hosted the city's elite, invite her—a nobody who couldn't even pay her rent?
It ate at her like a puzzle that refused to make sense. She put the invitation on her coffee table and started pacing around her apartment, trying to figure out what was happening. Maybe it was a mistake. Maybe it was for someone else.
Her phone buzzed her out of her thoughts. She glanced at the screen: a text from her best friend, Mia.
Mia: "U coming to karaoke tonight? We need ur terrible singing skills ????????"
Holly typed back quickly: Can't tonight. Something weird just happened. Call u later.
She sank onto her couch and picked up the envelope again. The golden snowflake emblem glimmered under her dim lamp. Her gut told her to go. If nothing else, it could make for an interesting story.
The next two days blur together. Holly did not get much sleep, so caught up was she in the mystery of the invitation. The night of December 22nd found her in her closet, rummaging through clothes that could pass as "festive formal.
She finally settled on a red velvet dress she had thrifted years ago but never worn. It was simple yet elegant, paired with a pair of black heels she hoped wouldn't give her blisters. As she finished her makeup, a knock echoed from her front door.
When she opened it, a sleek black car waited at the curb. A uniformed driver stood beside it, tipping his hat.
"Ms. Winters?" he asked.
Holly nodded, wrapping her coat tightly around her.
"Your ride awaits."
The drive to Victor Noel's mansion was uneventful yet nerve-wracking. Holly stared out the window, watching the city lights fade as they ventured into the countryside. Snow began to fall, blanketing the world in a soft white glow.
When the car drove up to the estate, Holly's breath caught. The mansion was a masterpiece - a sprawling structure adorned with twinkling lights, wreaths, and an enormous Christmas tree in the front courtyard. Pine and cinnamon scented the air.
She moved quietly out of the car and entered a line of impeccably dressed guests. There were people awaiting them from every direction as the staff ushered them into the mansion.
The grand foyer was even more impressive. Holly barely had time to admire the towering Christmas tree or the shimmering chandeliers before a sharp voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Welcome, Ms. Winters."
She turned to see a tall man in a tailored suit. His sharp features and icy blue eyes were unmistakable—it was Victor Noel himself.
"I'm glad you could join us," he said, his voice smooth but laced with something she couldn't quite place.
"Thank you for the invitation," Holly replied, trying to sound confident.
Victor studied her for a moment before leaning in slightly. "I hope you're ready for a night to remember."
Before she could respond, he moved on to greet the next guest, leaving her with more questions than answers.
The evening wore on dreamily. Holly moved among her guests, a fascinating lot by anyone's count: Clara Frost, antiques dealer with tales to tell for days; Nick Hart, brainiac and entrepreneur with the technological wherewithal, although rather incongruous among people of this order; and finally Mr. Yule, very elderly historian to speak in enigmas for his pains.
Just as Holly was beginning to feel she might actually enjoy the evening, the lights suddenly dimmed. A hush fell over the crowd as Victor stepped onto a small stage at the center of the room.
"Ladies and gentlemen," he began, his voice commanding attention. "Tonight is not just a celebration of the season. It is a test. Somewhere in this mansion lies a secret—a secret that could change everything."
He paused, letting the weight of his words sink in.
"To uncover it, you must work together. But beware—time is not on your side. Midnight on Christmas Eve is the deadline. Fail, and you may lose more than you realize."
Before anyone could react, the lights went out completely.
In the darkness, Holly's heart pounded. Then a scream came from somewhere in the room, then the crash of shattering glass. When the lights flickered back on, Victor was nowhere to be found.

"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."

The Human Among Wolves
My stomach twisted, but he wasn’t finished.
"You're just a pathetic little human," Zayn said, his words deliberate, each one hitting like a slap. "Spreading your legs for the first guy who bothers to notice you."
Heat rushed to my face, burning with humiliation. My chest ached — not from his words alone, but from the sick realization that I had trusted him. That I had let myself believe he was different.
I was so, so stupid.

I Slapped My Fiancé—Then Married His Billionaire Nemesis
Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now—billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn’t mind. I’d crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one?
Wrong.
One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That’s when it hit me—he didn’t love me. He didn’t even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn’t even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup.
So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster—my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise.
Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol.
Enter him.
Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I’d met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes.
It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised.
But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life.
And, as it turned out, the best decision I’d ever made.
Because my one-night stand isn’t just some random guy. He’s richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with.
And now, he’s not letting me go.
