Introduction

Five years ago, Eleanor Ellis walked out of Derek Cross's apartment with one unanswered question and didn't look back. No note. No explanation. Just a decision made by a woman who had finally understood that love, in his world, was something you accepted on his terms — or not at all.
Six weeks later, she found out she was pregnant.
She built a life without him. A career, a daughter, a quiet stability assembled piece by careful piece. She told herself Bellhaven was finished.
She was wrong.

Now Eleanor is Chief Medical Officer at St. Catherine's Medical Center — and Derek has just been named director of the department she oversees. The man who once asked her to trust him without giving her the truth is now, by every institutional measure, accountable to her. He still believes she left because she didn't love him enough. She has never told him what his mother said to her the night before she disappeared.
Between them: five years of wrong assumptions, a professional authority neither of them can afford to misuse, and a four-year-old girl with her mother's stubbornness and her father's eyes — who doesn't know yet what she is to him, and neither does he.

"The Cross Between Us" is a second-chance romance about two people who damaged each other with silence rather than cruelty, and who must now decide — in operating rooms, in darkened corridors, in the particular honesty that only arrives at three in the morning — whether what they withheld can ever be returned.
Some debts aren't paid with apologies. They're paid with staying.

Chapter 1

Eleanor's POV

The invitation had said six o'clock, and I arrived exactly on time.

The address Victoria sent wasn't the Cross family house. It was a private dining room on the fourth floor of the Hargrove Club.

I'd picked my outfit carefully. Riding the elevator up, I told myself this was probably about that hospital gala Derek mentioned, or the research grant money.

I was wrong about that.

Victoria was already seated when I was shown in. She did not stand.

"Eleanor." She said my name like she was reading off a tag. "Sit down."

The room held two chairs and a small table—only the folder in front of her, and the envelope she slid across the surface the moment I sat.

"I want to be clear," she said, "that this is not about you personally. A full scholarship, two research distinctions, the residency match you're waiting on—you've worked hard, and that's genuine." She paused.

"But Derek has obligations that exist independent of who he's seeing. The Whitmore family has been tied to ours for two generations. That alliance is not optional. Camille knows what she's walking into. I'm not sure you do."

I had heard the name Whitmore before. I hadn't thought to ask more — figured I'd wait for whatever came next.

She opened the folder and set a photograph on top of the envelope. Derek at a formal dinner, leaning toward a woman I didn't know, both of them mid-laugh, easy with each other in the way of people who had been easy for a long time.

"This was taken three weeks ago. A Whitmore-Cross joint event. Camille has attended eleven such functions in the past year." She let me look at it for a moment. "Derek hasn't mentioned any of this to you, I imagine."

He hadn't.

"The money in that envelope opens up real choices for you. A research fellowship overseas, a fresh start in another city. I'm not telling you to vanish. I'm giving you a way to walk away and keep everything — your career, your pride, your future. None of those things have to be casualties of this."

"And if I don't take it?"

She looked at me with something that was almost patience. "Then you stay, and you wait, and eventually you watch the same outcome from a much harder angle." She folded her hands on the table. "I've seen it before. Girls who thought love was enough to restructure a family's obligations. It never is. Not in families like ours."

I set my hand on the envelope, felt the weight of whatever was inside, then flipped it over and slid it back across the table.

"I appreciate your honesty," I said, "But I'd rather hear this from Derek."

Something moved behind her eyes—not surprise, exactly. More like the adjustment a chess player makes when a piece moves unexpectedly. "That's your choice," she said. "I hope you'll think carefully about what you're walking into."

"I will," I said. I picked up my bag and stood. "I'll ask him myself."

He opened the door still wearing his casual clothes. The apartment felt painfully familiar — surgery sketches spread over his desk, that coffee mug I gave him two years back, the warm lamp glow I linked to late nights and his voice.

I had spent hundreds of hours in this apartment. I had believed I would spend hundreds more.

I set the photograph on his desk. Flat, face-up.

He looked at it, then at me. Something shifted in his expression—not guilt, but a kind of recalibration. He did not ask where I had gotten it.

"That's a business dinner," he said. "The Whitmore partnership has been in negotiation for months. It's not what you're thinking."

"Then tell me what it is."

"It's complicated. There are moving parts I'm not in a position to explain right now." He said it with the full weight of his certainty. "Eleanor, I need you to trust me."

"I do trust you," I said. "That's not the issue. I need you to tell me if there is a plan for you to marry her."

He was quiet for a moment. "There are family expectations. Arrangements that predate us. I'm working through them."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the most honest answer I can give you right now."

I looked at him. He was standing with his arms at his sides, composed, certain—and still he had not asked where the photograph came from.

"Derek." I kept my voice level. "I'm not asking for a breakdown of your family's master plan. I'm asking one thing. Am I someone you build a life with, or someone you build a life around?"

He looked at the photograph, then past it, and I watched him choose his next words.

"I need you to trust me," he said again. "I know that's hard right now. But I'm asking you to give me time to handle this the right way."

"How much time?"

"I don't know yet."

"And while you're handling it," I said, "what am I supposed to do? Keep showing up, keep not asking questions, keep pretending I don't know that your family is negotiating your future with someone else?"

I heard my voice stay flat and steady and hated it a little, because flat and steady was what I defaulted to when I was trying not to break. "You're asking me to trust you, but you won't tell me the truth. You won't even ask me how I found out. Does it not occur to you to wonder?"

Something crossed his face then—a flicker, quickly controlled. "Where did you get it?"

"You're asking now."

He didn't press it, like the question had never been his to begin with — just a polite reflex off my cue.

"It doesn't matter," I said. Because the point was never the photograph. The point was the way he was standing in his apartment looking at me like I was a variable he needed to manage rather than a person he owed the truth to. "What matters is that you've known about all of this, and you decided I didn't need to know. That's not protecting me. That's just deciding I don't get a vote."

The silence stretched. He didn't fill it.

I picked up my coat and put it on, working the buttons slowly. He watched without speaking.

"We're done," I said, and walked out the door.

It took me four hours to pack all the stuff that mattered.

Documents first — passport, school records, residency papers. Then clothes. Then the little keepsakes: my mom's photo, my grandma's earrings, those marked-up textbooks I couldn't afford to buy again.

I moved through the rooms efficiently, the way I always did when there was something difficult that needed doing, and I did not let myself stop moving because I knew what stopping would cost me.

The last thing I packed was the book. A small hardcover Derek and I had found in a used bookshop early on—a battered collection of anatomical illustrations from the 1890s, absurd and beautiful and completely useless.

He'd handed it to me grinning and said, "You need this." I'd bought it for four bucks and kept it on my nightstand ever since.

I stood holding it longer than I'd stood holding anything else that night. Then I put it in the box.

At half past two, I emailed my faculty advisor about the consortium transfer program in Boston—an opportunity I'd noted six months ago and filed away under "unlikely".

I had to get out of Bellhaven. Derek told me "I need you to trust me" twice, and both times I saw him pick his words like he was handling a problem, not talking to someone he loved.

He was so calm, and I was so done with conversations where one person holds all the cards.

Everything else in this city had his fingerprints on it too—the hospital, the apartment, the coffee shop on Mercer Street where we'd spent Sunday mornings. I couldn't stay somewhere that was going to remind me, every single day, of a life I'd almost had.

Then I carried my bags to the curb, left the apartment key in an envelope for my landlord, and got into the cab waiting at the corner.

I did not leave Derek a note. I had said what I needed to say, and he had answered me with silence, and silence was its own kind of answer.

I remember thinking, in the cab, that I was tired in a way that felt different from the usual end-of-rotation exhaustion—heavier, somehow, settled deeper than a single bad night could account for.

I put it down to the particular cost of walking away from something you had loved carefully and for a long time.

The streetlights made yellow pools on the wet pavement. I sat in the front passenger seat and watched the city in the side mirror—the Hargrove Club's awning, the block where Derek's building stood, the intersection I had crossed a hundred times without thinking.

Bellhaven shrank smaller and smaller in that little window, until it was just blurry lights and shapes, and then it was gone completely.

Luna Ariana Volkstane slid the formal rejection request across the table. "Let's end this bond. It's better for you, me, and your first love."

He just smirked. "You want me to reject you? You think you can break our bond that easily?"

So she did. Ariana cut ties with him completely, poured herself into her career, and rose to global fame as a legendary healer, her knowledge of rare herbs, wolf anatomy, and ancient magic sought after across continents.

The powerful suitors lined up. The Alpha of an overseas empire whispered, "Ariana, hurry up and perform the severing ritual. I can't wait to claim you." A powerful pack leader vowed, "I'll be there with you the day you break the bond." A legendary wolf attorney promised, "I'll handle your rejection case with the pack council myself."

Ariana just rubbed her temples. It's not that she didn't want the split, she wanted it more than anything, it's just that the Alpha she was mated to refused to let go.

Finally, she announced, "Whoever can officially get me rejected, I'll put you at the head table of my bond-breaking celebration."

Not long after, Alpha Damian was served the official rejection request right in the middle of an emergency pack council meeting. That same afternoon, he was attacked by rogues at the gates of his own territory.

When Ariana showed up at the pack infirmary with healing herbs, she repeated calmly, "Let's sever the mate bond. It's better for you, me, and everyone else."

But the cold, untouchable Alpha pulled her into his arms, his eyes blood-red with fury. "You want me to reject you? Over my dead body."
