Chapter 1
I was standing by the sink when the knock came. Three short taps. Not the kind neighbors make. This one sounded official, like someone who didn’t care if they woke the whole floor.
I wiped my wet hands on the back of my jeans and walked to the door. Through the peephole I saw a mailman, sweaty and impatient, balancing a thick stack of envelopes against his chest.
I opened the door halfway.
“Miss Foster?” he asked, already looking down at the letters.
“Yes, that’s me.”
He grunted, shifted the heavy pile, and pulled out a single cream-colored envelope. “This one’s for you.”
I took it. The paper felt expensive, thicker than normal mail. Before I could ask who sent it, he was already turning away.
“Wait—”
But he was gone, shoes scuffing down the stairs like he had a hundred more stops and no time for questions.
I closed the door and leaned against it. The apartment felt even smaller than usual. One window, a couch that sagged in the middle, and the constant smell of the fried food from the shop downstairs. I stared at the envelope in my hand.
Whitmore & Hale Legal Associates.
I almost laughed. Law firms didn’t write to people like me. Not anymore, not since everything fell apart. I tore it open right there in the narrow hallway.
Miss Maya Foster,
We are writing to inform you of matters concerning your late grandmother’s estate. Critical documents and information are available, but they can only be released if you appear in person. Please board the 7:40 p.m. ferry this evening. Your ticket has been arranged and is enclosed.
I read it twice. Then a third time. My grandmother had been a quiet woman who lived in a one-bedroom flat and saved coins in a biscuit tin. She didn’t have an estate. She barely had furniture.
I walked to the tiny kitchen table and sat down hard. The old anger rose up fast, the same way it always did.
“This is suspicious as hell,” I muttered, rubbing my forehead. “There’s no reason for me to go to some stupid meeting. I already lost everything. The company. My father. All of it… because of Noah Sinclair.”
Just saying his name left a bitter taste in my mouth. I was ready to rip the letter in half when something slipped out and landed on the table.
A ferry ticket. My full name was printed on it in clean black letters. Date, time and seat number already paid for.
I stared at it for a long time. Nobody bought tickets for strangers out of kindness. Especially not for me.
Still, the curiosity sat there like a stone in my chest. What if it was real? What if my grandmother had left something after all? Even if it was nothing, at least it would be something that didn’t belong to Noah Sinclair.
I looked around my apartment, the cracked tiles, the stack of unpaid bills on the counter, the photo of my father turned face-down because I still couldn’t look at it without feeling like I’d failed him.
“Fine,” I said under my breath. “I’ll go. But the second this feels wrong, I’m leaving.”
I changed into clean jeans and a plain black top, pulled my hair into a tight ponytail, and shoved the ticket into my back pocket. I didn’t pack a bag. I wasn’t planning to stay long.
The ferry terminal smelled like diesel and salt. People moved in tired. workers were going home, a few tourists with rolling bags, couples arguing quietly over tickets. I kept my head down and handed my ticket to the attendant.
“Enjoy your trip,” she said without looking at me.
I found a seat near the middle of the deck, close enough to the railing that I could feel the wind. The sky was already turning that soft gray color it gets just before evening. I tried to relax, tried to tell myself this was just a strange errand and nothing more.
Then I saw him.
Noah Sinclair stood near the front of the ferry, talking to no one, hands in the pockets of a dark coat that probably cost more than my rent.
He looked exactly like he did in the newspapers — cold, controlled, untouchable. The same man who had walked into my family’s company and taken everything without raising his voice.
My stomach twisted. “Shit,” I whispered, turning my face away quickly. “What is he doing here?”
Of all the ferries in the city, he had to be on this one.
I kept my eyes on the water, pretending I hadn’t seen him. My heart was already beating too fast. I hated that he still had that effect on me. Hated that just the sight of him could drag me back to the day the movers cleared out our office and my father sat in the empty room staring at nothing.
I shifted in my seat, trying to put more distance between us without looking obvious.
That’s when I noticed the others. Three men in black suits. Not standing together, but all of them watching me. One held a phone up like he was checking messages, but the camera was pointed straight at my face.
Another leaned against a pole, eyes following every small movement I made. The third stayed farther back, but every time I glanced over, he was still looking. My mouth went dry.
Noah wasn’t relaxed either. He kept scanning the deck, jaw tight, shoulders stiff. He looked like a man waiting for something bad to happen.
Something was wrong. I stood up too fast and walked toward the restrooms, keeping my head down. Inside the small bathroom I locked the door and braced both hands on the sink. The fluorescent light made my face look pale.
“Calm down,” I told my reflection, voice shaking a little. “You cannot show weakness in front of that asshole. Not today.”
I splashed cold water on my wrists and waited until my breathing slowed. When I stepped back out, the air on the deck felt heavier.
I ordered a bottle of water from the small counter near the stairs and returned to my seat. The three men were still there. Noah was still watching the crowd more than the water.
My ticket said the trip would take just under an hour. I only needed to wait for whoever had sent that letter. I kept telling myself that.
The ferry engines hummed steadily underneath us. People talked in low voices. A child laughed somewhere near the back. Everything looked normal if you didn’t pay attention.
I paid attention. I noticed when one of the men in black shifted closer. I noticed when Noah’s eyes flicked toward the lower stairwell. I noticed the way the crew members started glancing at each other more often.
My fingers tightened around the water bottle. Then a sharp yell cut through the evening air.
A crewman came running up from below, face pale, radio crackling in his hand.
“Someone just locked the lower-deck doors!” he shouted over the sudden rising alarm. “We’re all trapped!”
