Chapter 1
Ella
I smiled as I stared at the signed contract in my hands that was worth millions.
After two days of relentless negotiation, I have finally gotten Alpha Daemon of the Bloodfang Pack to sign it.
This contract means a lot to my husband. And I can't wait to see his happy face when I give him.
I made my way to his study with excitement, but Kyren’s warm, soft laugh hit me before I even touched the study door.
The kind of laugh he hadn’t shared with me in months.
Then I heard Chloe giggling flirtatiously.
My stomach twisted.
I pushed the door open, and my blood ran cold as I saw my husband and my sister locked in a close embrace.
His hand on her waist. Her head on his chest. Smiling like they belonged together.
My heart snapped.
“What’s going on here?” My voice came out sharp, steadier than I felt.
They jerked apart. Kyren rushed toward me with a bright grin.
“Ella! You’re back!” He hugged me, but all I felt was the pain in my heart. “Uhm... Your sister was just telling me about her trip to France. Why didn’t you tell us you were coming?”
Wait, am I supposed to tell my husband that I am coming to my house?
“I wanted to surprise you,” I managed, even as betrayal clawed up my throat.
“Oh, sis! Welcome back,” Chloe said, her smile was sweet enough to rot teeth.
She knew exactly what she was doing.
It wasn’t the first time I’d found them like this. And every time, Kyren always told me it was innocent and harmless, nothing to worry about. Yet the ache in my chest only grew heavier.
Kyren finally noticed the shift in the air. “Wait…” His eyes widened. “Did you get the contract?”
Silently, I handed him the contract, the deal I fought two sleepless days for, chasing Alpha Daemon across Bloodfang territory just to secure his dream.
He flipped through it, stunned. “You did it. You actually...” he turned away from me and grabbed Chloe in excitement, “She did it, Chloe! She got Alpha Daemon to sign it!”
He hugged her.
Not me.
I felt my heart breaking into pieces all over again.
I stood there, invisible, while the man I loved celebrated in another woman’s arms. My own sister’s arms. Right in my presence.
Goddess, this is too much to bear. I can't take it anymore.
I swallowed the burn in my throat, forced my expression blank, and turned away.
“Ella! Wait!” Kyren called. “You have to tell me how you did it!”
I ignored him.
But behind me, Chloe murmured, “Let her go.”
My steps quickened. Then turned into a run.
By the time I reached my room, my hands shook so badly I couldn’t hold the doorknob as hot tears blurred my vision.
I pressed both hands over my mouth to silence the sob that ripped out of me.
Goddess, the pain was undescribable, making tears and snort fall down my cheeks.
I curled on the bed, gripping the sheets like they were the only thing holding me together. The pillow soaked beneath my face. Every sob hurt. Every breath felt like shattered glass in my lungs.
I waited for Kyren. I waited until the sun moved across the sky… until the shadows changed… until the silence became unbearable.
But he never came. Not once.
The man I loved… the man I sacrificed everything for… couldn’t walk upstairs. Couldn’t knock. Couldn’t say well done, Ella. Couldn’t even pretend to care.
Why am I the only one fighting for this marriage?
I had been loyal, faithful. Blinded by love. Even though we were never fated, I gave him my whole heart. And he promised, he swore that he rejected Chloe, that he chose me. That I was enough.
But forever had ended long before today.
Memories I had buried clawed their way up.
Three years ago, Kyren was engaged to my sister because they were fated mates but she left him… she said she needed to chase her modeling dreams and because the elders insisted Kyren marry before ascending the throne, my parents begged me to marry him.
I was a model too then, one of the top ten in the world. My name was on billboards, my face on magazines. I have it all but I gave it up for them. For him. I sacrificed my dreams just to become the Luna everyone expected me to be and I did it all with love.
I stood beside Kyren, encouraged him, secured deals behind the scenes, did the dirty work so he could shine in front of the pack. Every success he had… I was the shadow behind it.
He loved me once. Yeah, I know he did because he made me feel special, wanted and cherished and I didn't know when I fell deeply in love with him. But everything changed when Chloe came back six months ago and I became invisible to kyren.
A knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts. I quickly wiped the tears from my face and cleared my throat.
“Come in,” I said quietly.
One of the maids stepped in with a worried look. “Luna, the food is ready.”
“I’m not hungry,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.
She hesitated, frowning but bowed her head and left without another word.
The rest of the day passed in a blur of tears and silence. I never left the room. I kept thinking… Maybe he’s busy. Maybe he’ll come up later. Maybe… he cares enough to say thank you.
But Kyren didn’t even check on me.... He didn't even say a word.
I must’ve cried myself to sleep because when I opened my eyes again, the sky outside was dark and the room felt cold. I sat up quickly and glanced at the clock.
2:00 a.m.
What?
I rushed out of bed and checked the hallway. The house was silent. No sign of him.
My heart dropped with disappointment. I tried to mind-link him but he blocked me immediately.
I let out a dry, bitter laugh.
I am still foolish enough to believe he might care.
I headed downstairs to get some water. My throat was dry and my chest ached.
The palace was quiet, all lights dimmed, except for a soft glow coming from one of the guest rooms.
Just then, I heard a moan coming from the room.
I quickly put a halt on my track, my brows furrowed.
What the hell? Who would dare do such a thing in the palace?
Could it be the servants? No, they wouldn’t dare.
Curiosity pulled me closer. I tiptoed to the door, each step making my heart beat faster.
I shouldn’t open it. I should walk away. But something… something told me I needed to know.
I slowly pushed the door open and the world crashed around me.
My eyes widened in horror as I saw Chloe on top of my husband, her body tangled with his, her nails clawing into his skin, her mouth on his neck, moaning his name like it belonged to her.
Kyren’s hands were on her hips. His head thrown back. His voice low, hungry, calling her mate.
They were so lost in their pleasure that they didn’t notice me.
I stood there, frozen, my soul ripping apart in silence.
The pain was violent and cruel.
My knees shook. My breath vanished. My heart… Goddess, it felt like it had been torn straight from my chest.
Goddess, After everything I sacrificed, after killing my own dreams, loving him until it hurt.
This... this was how he chose to repay me?
