The Ex's Prank: I Married the "Madman"
Daisy Swift · Completed · 5.9k Words
Introduction
"Walk through the ceremony with him," Preston demanded, wrapping his arm around his secretary, Lydia. "Consider it your apology for upsetting her."
Lydia smiled with practiced delicacy. "It's just a little joke, Maren. Don't be so dramatic. I'll be keeping Mr. Vale company today."
Preston looked down at me with arrogant certainty. "It's a prank. Why are you getting so hysterical?"
Seeing the smugness in his eyes, the love I had protected for five years finally shattered. I calmly turned to the quiet man standing in the borrowed suit.
"He came dressed as a groom to take his bride. How is this a game?" I stepped away from Preston and held my hand out to the supposed lunatic. "If we are going to do this, we make it real. Silas, will you marry me?"
Chapter 1
On our wedding day, my fiancé, Preston Vale, didn't come to walk me down the aisle. Instead, he brought Silas Rowan—the "unstable" son of his family's former driver.
Silas, will you marry me?"
...
The bridal suite went silent when Preston Vale announced what he wanted me to do.
One of my bridesmaids stared at him. "Maren Caldwell is your fiancée. You cannot hand her to another man on her wedding day."
"Marriage is not a prank," another said. "The two of you have spent six months planning this."
Preston strolled into the room as if the argument had already been settled. His tuxedo jacket hung open, and satisfaction brightened his face. Lydia Cross followed him in a pale silk dress that looked far too much like something a bride might wear.
"Maren and I understand each other," Preston said. "Why are outsiders getting hysterical?"
He stopped beside Lydia and put a hand at her waist.
"She sent Lydia to urgent care last week. An apology clearly was not enough."
Lydia lowered her eyes with practiced delicacy. A narrow bandage covered the scrape on her arm.
The sight almost made me laugh.
Last week, she had come to my office without an appointment, claiming Preston had asked her to deliver a file. While I was on a call, she opened drawers marked confidential, rifled through contract drafts, and knocked a full cup of coffee across the documents for a negotiation worth millions to the Caldwells.
I had dragged the papers out of the spill and demanded to know what she thought she was doing.
Lydia had burst into tears, run from the room, and clipped her arm against the corner of the hallway wall.
Preston arrived ten minutes later. He never asked about the damaged contract or the profit we lost. He took Lydia to urgent care, then made me spend the entire night calling and texting her until she finally accepted my apology.
After five years with him, I had learned how every disagreement ended: Lydia cried, Preston deflected the blame onto me, and I swallowed my pride to keep the peace.
Now, a quiet surrender wasn't enough. Preston wanted a public spectacle.
He pointed toward the tall man sitting beside the window.
"Walk through the chapel ceremony with the driver's unstable son," Preston said, "or forget about becoming Mrs. Vale."
Silas Rowan slowly looked up.
The borrowed black suit draped surprisingly well across his broad shoulders, giving him an unexpected, structured edge. But above the crisp lapels, his face betrayed him—he still carried that same unguarded, flickering uncertainty.
Everyone in the Vale household called him unstable. I had seen him laugh at corners, scatter food over a dining table, and retreat when Preston lifted a hand. The Vales kept him in the estate house because his father had once worked for them. They spoke about him as if he were a difficult pet they were too charitable to abandon.
Preston believed I would never refuse him.
For five years, he had treated my love like an account with no withdrawal limit. I forgave his cold silences. I tolerated the way he canceled plans whenever Lydia called. I gave him a free pass to trash my clothes, scrutinize my career, and whine about how cold I was when it was just the two of us. Every time he hurt me, I remembered the man who had once spent a month sewing a scarf in my favorite shade of blue.
But that man had disappeared so gradually that I had kept loving his memory instead.
Preston was willing to trample my dignity in front of our families just to buy a smile from Lydia. I knew that if I folded now, there would be no piece of myself left that he couldn't demand later.
A sudden, absolute stillness settled in my chest.
Without another thought, I crossed the room, stopped right in front of Silas, and offered him my hand.
"Silas, will you marry me?"
Preston's smile vanished.
"What are you doing?" he snapped. "I said he could stand in for the ceremony. I did not tell you to make it real."
Lydia slipped her arm through his.
"She is bluffing," she said sweetly. "Maren has wanted to be Mrs. Vale for years. If you give in now, she will control you forever."
Understanding—or what Preston mistook for it—crossed his face. The smugness returned.
"Change gowns afterward," he told me. "That one will be ruined."
He drew Lydia against him and laughed.
"I have a meeting at Vale Holdings. I am not wasting my morning watching this performance."
Then, they left together without looking back.
The door closed. The suite seemed colder.
I kept my hand extended, although my courage had begun to shake.
Silas rose. Up close, he was even taller than I remembered. He looked at my fingers, then at my face, as if he needed to make sure the offer was meant for him.
He placed his warm palm beneath mine.
"Do you know what I am asking?" I asked.
His thumb moved once across my knuckles.
"Yes."
"I mean a real marriage."
He stepped closer, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear with an unexpected, quiet grace.
"Yes," he said again. "I want to marry you."

He doesn't answer.
So she asks: 'What are we?’

The experience was both terrifying and magical, allowing me to feel every longing emotion through the dance.
I soon found myself lost in his arms.
When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.
The ballroom fell silent.
Was he about to kiss me?
