Chapter 1
My father planned to hand me over to the heir no one in New York's old-money circle dared to cross, so I ran away with my boyfriend.

We were grateful to him.
Later, a doctor at a private hospital told us my father had aggressive cancer. I worked up the courage to ask Wesley for help again.
He took a drag on his cigarette and watched me through the smoke.
"Spend one night with me."
The blood drained from my face.

Wesley Harcourt was the man everyone in New York's old-money circle wanted to please.
If a puddle lay in his path, somebody would probably get down on all fours and offer him a dry bridge made of their own back. The reward for humiliating yourself could be enormous. One man had once begged Wesley to step on him as a joke at a party. His family's corner store had turned into a regional chain within two years.
A woman who knew when to laugh and what to praise could build a seven-figure net worth.
My father wanted his share of that magic.
He had spent years teaching us that every person had a price and every favor created a debt. When he spoke about Wesley, he did not sound ashamed of offering me. He sounded irritated that I had not volunteered sooner. In his mind, my face was one of the few assets the creditors had not reached.
He had built a real-estate development business on debt, then gambled away the little financial breathing room he had left. By the time he came for me, creditors were waiting outside his office and he had to wear baseball caps and tinted glasses just to leave the house.
He told me I already moved in the same social circles, so I should stop pretending to be innocent. I should charm Wesley, become his mistress, and save the family.
I didn't argue.
In my father's house, arguing only changed how hard the punishment landed.
I did go to those parties sometimes.
I liked dressing up. I liked taking pictures in beautiful rooms and posting them before anyone could ask whether I belonged there. Friends invited me to private dinners, rooftop parties, and weekends at houses none of us owned. Wesley was often somewhere in the center of them, surrounded by people who watched his glass more closely than their own.
But I had never wanted to be anyone's dog.
Serve him well, and the rewards could make a life. Displease him, and a fall from a third-floor balcony might be described as luck.
I had reason to be afraid of him.
The fear was not based on gossip alone. At those parties, conversation changed when Wesley entered. Men twice his age stood straighter. Women checked their dresses and expressions. A server once dropped a glass near him and went so pale that I thought she might faint. Wesley only stepped around the broken stem, but three guests spent the next hour demanding that the manager fire her. That was how his power worked: other people rushed to become cruel before he had to ask.
At one party, a drunk man had laughed too loudly and said, "What is Wesley Harcourt, anyway? Why should I crawl for him?"
Wesley had not answered. He had barely looked over.
That made what happened afterward worse.
Within a week, inspectors, suppliers, and lenders began squeezing the man's family business from every side.
His father lost a loan extension. A landlord questioned a lease that had been secure for years. Someone sent old photographs and private messages to business partners. Each event could be explained on its own. Together, they formed a lesson everyone in the circle understood, even if Wesley never acknowledged it.
Wesley might not have ordered any of it. He didn't need to. Too many people were eager to anticipate what would amuse him.
The next time I saw the man, he was on his knees in front of Wesley, begging forgiveness and slapping his own face. My friends and I had come out expecting champagne and gossip. Instead, we stood against the wall and watched him hit himself until his cheeks swelled and his lip split.
No one told him to stop.
At last Wesley looked at the man, then at the people beside him.
"What is he doing?"
Two men dragged the kneeling man away as if he were trash left after a party.
I never learned what became of him. I stopped going out with that crowd.
That memory returned whenever my father mentioned Wesley's name. It was hard to know which frightened me more: Wesley's power, or the number of people willing to hurt someone for the chance to please him.
By then my father was half-crazed from debt.
One afternoon, he told me to put on something flattering. We were going to a private club dinner that night.
He did not have to explain the rest. He meant to deliver me to Wesley.
I said yes.
My father was an authoritarian patriarch even when he was rich, and losing his money had not weakened his rule at home. It had only made him meaner. I was a daughter born from an affair. After I was born, my biological mother left him, and he took me home for his wife to raise.
My stepmother never contradicted him. Neither did the crowd of children he had collected through marriages and affairs. Money had once made obedience look respectable. Without it, the fear underneath became obvious.
He still ruled the house like a patriarch, crushing every objection.
Wesley frightened me because he carried the same certainty. The powerful men I knew—my father, and men like Wesley—believed money and influence gave them the right to control everyone beneath them and silence anyone who pushed back.
I did not intend to trade one master for another.
I had graduated from college and had no job. My father had never encouraged me to build a career. He had been waiting for the right moment to cash in on my looks and my connections.
That moment had arrived.
I called my boyfriend, Owen Parker.
I did not begin with a plan. I asked whether he loved me enough to leave that night. It was unfair, but fear had made fairness feel like a luxury. Owen asked where I was, whether I had identification, and how quickly I could reach the airport. His practical questions steadied me. No one in my family had ever helped me think when I panicked.
Owen had been in my class. He came from a small Midwestern town where both of his parents were middle-school teachers. He was steady, considerate, and almost painfully good at imagining how another person might feel. With him, I could speak without measuring every word first.
I told him my father was going to sell me.
"Then we're leaving," Owen said.
The dinner was that evening. While my father locked himself in his study to fight with a lender, I slipped out with one small bag. Owen met me at the airport with two tickets to Chicago.
I turned on airplane mode before we boarded.
For the first time in my life, my father's calls could not reach me.

Accardi
“I thought you said you were done chasing me?” Gen mocked.
“I am done chasing you.”
Before she could formulate a witty remark, Matteo threw her down. She landed hard on her back atop his dining room table. She tried to sit up when she noticed what he was doing. His hands were working on his belt. It came free of his pants with a violent yank. She collapsed back on her elbows, her mouth gaping open at the display. His face was a mask of sheer determination, his eyes were a dark gold swimming with heat and desire. His hands wrapped around her thighs and pulled her to the edge of the table. He glided his fingers up her thighs and hooked several around the inside of her panties. His knuckles brushed her dripping sex.
“You’re soaking wet, Genevieve. Tell me, was it me that made you this way or him?” his voice told her to be careful with her answer. His knuckles slid down through her folds and she threw her head back as she moaned. “Weakness?”
“You…” she breathed.
Genevieve loses a bet she can’t afford to pay. In a compromise, she agrees to convince any man her opponent chooses to go home with her that night.
