Introduction

For ten years, Aletheia endured unimaginable torment in the freezing rivers of the Underworld.

Once, she was the most radiant Goddess of the Dawn in Olympus—until a bloodline trial exposed her as a mere mortal, a "fraud." In an instant, she lost everything. Her hypocritical adoptive parents exiled her, and Ares, the God of War and the fiancé she once loved, watched her ruin with cold indifference.

Now, when Olympus needs a political pawn to appease the Underworld, they suddenly remember the scarred and broken Aletheia.

Tossed into the black chariot of a bloodthirsty tyrant like a sacrificial offering, Aletheia braces herself for another eternity of suffering.

Yet Erebus, the rumored ruthless Lord of Shadows, doesn't break her. Instead, with the gentlest of touches, he brushes the frost from her skin.

When the gods who betrayed her return to claim what they once threw away, will Aletheia choose the Light that rejected her—or will she embrace the Darkness where she finally found her home?

Chapter 1

Aletheia's POV

The black ferry cut through water that looked like liquid night. I sat in the stern, as far from the prow as possible, watching mist curl off the surface of the river that marked the boundary between the Underworld and Mount Olympus. Somewhere in that fog, the Lethe flowed—the river of forgetting. I'd spent ten years wishing I could drink from it.

But forgetting wasn't a mercy the gods granted to sinners.

The cold didn't bother me anymore. That was one of the few gifts Cocytus had given me—I'd been frozen so thoroughly, for so long, that normal cold felt like nothing. My hands, tucked deep in the sleeves of my grey prison rags, were covered in scars that would never heal right. Frostbite that had gone bone-deep. Whip marks from the barbed lashes they used in the frozen river. I kept them hidden. They were mine. Private proof of what I'd survived.

Through the thinning mist, I could make out a figure waiting on the dock. White-gold robes catching the eternal light bleeding down from Olympus above. Broad shoulders held with that particular arrogance that came from never having to bow to anyone.

Orion Morningstar. The man who, ten years ago, upon discovering I was not his sister, ruthlessly cast me into the dungeons.

The ferry groaned as it slowed, and I didn't move. Ten years in Cocytus had taught me that stillness was survival. Any motion drew attention, and attention meant pain.

"Aletheia." His voice carried across the water, warm and careful, like he was trying to coax a wounded animal. "I've come to bring you home."

Home. The word landed wrong, a key that no longer fit its lock.

I lifted my head just enough to meet his eyes. My hair—once gold as summer wheat—now hung in brittle white strands around my face. I'd stopped looking at my reflection in the ice years ago. I already knew what I'd see. A corpse that hadn't had the decency to die.

"The Nameless," I corrected, voice flat. "Mount Olympus shattered my star. I don't have a name anymore."

Something flickered across his face. Shock, maybe. Or the beginning of guilt. He stepped onto the ferry, and I watched his gaze catch on every visible change.

Good. Let him see.

He reached into a storage pouch and pulled out a cloak. The fabric was beautiful—dawn-colored silk embroidered with the family crest, a golden phoenix spreading its wings across a rising sun. The kind of thing I used to wear every day without thinking.

"Mother sent this for you," he said. "The winds up to the mountain can be—"

I jerked back before he could drape it over my shoulders. The movement was instinctive, animal. My body remembered what my mind tried to forget: anything blessed by the sun would now become a weapon to burn me.

The cloak slipped from his hands and hit the deck. Frost formed immediately where it touched the boards, creeping across the golden threads like a disease.

Orion stared at it. Then at me. His jaw worked like he was chewing on words he couldn't spit out.

I looked away. The dock was getting closer. Beyond it, I could see the Dawn Gate—a massive arch of gold and white marble that marked the entrance to the Estate. I used to run through that gate as a child, laughing, convinced I was the luckiest girl in all of Olympus.

I'd been so fucking stupid.

The memories came before I could stop them.

Ten years ago, I'd had a star.

It hung in the night sky above Olympus—dim, sputtering, barely visible among the brilliant lights of the other gods. The Blind Star, they'd called it. A cosmic joke. While Orion's star burned steady and strong, mine flickered like a candle about to go out.

But back then, at least someone told me it didn't matter.

"Stop staring at it." A voice came from behind me, carrying the hardness of battlefields and the confidence of youth. Ares Ironblood, the newly risen war god, my fiancé.

He'd just returned from the mortal battlefields, still carrying the scent of gunpowder and victory. His crimson cloak whipped in the night wind, bronze eyes glinting with cold light under the stars. He was Olympus's youngest and most promising war god—fresh from slaying the Titan beasts that had ravaged the mortal realm, returning to the mountain with unmatched glory.

Every divine maiden wanted to marry him. And he'd chosen me.

Or rather, chosen who he thought I was.

"Your star will brighten," he said, his tone carrying that unquestionable authority, like issuing commands on a battlefield. "Once you pass the Bloodline Ordeal, it'll shine brighter than anyone's."

I remember turning to look at him then, my heart racing. "You really think so?"

"I don't say things I'm not certain of." His hand fell on my shoulder, warmth seeping through the thin fabric of my robe. "You're a daughter of the Dawn Estate. Light's blood flows in your veins. That star is just waiting for the right moment."

He said it with such certainty, such conviction. Like he was certain he'd win on the battlefield.

I'd believed him then. Believed he saw something others couldn't. Believed he chose me not because of family alliance, but because he truly valued me.

How stupid.

The Star Altar had been built in the clouds, a massive circle of white stone floating above Olympus itself. It was where all the great ceremonies were held—coronations, divine marriages, the Bloodline Ordeals that confirmed a god's right to their power.

I'd climbed those steps in a gown of flowing light, gold thread woven through fabric that shimmered like dawn itself. Every major god in Olympus was watching. Lord Zeus on his lightning throne. Lady Hera with her crown of peacock feathers. The whole glittering pantheon, waiting to see if the Dawn Estate's daughter would finally prove herself worthy.

The Testing Basin sat in the center of the altar. It was carved from the bones of a primordial god—something older than Olympus itself—and it could recognize true divine blood. All I had to do was place my hand inside and let my blood flow.

Orion walked me to the edge of the Basin. His hand on my back was steady, reassuring. "You've got this," he whispered. "After today, no one will ever doubt you again."

I nodded, took a deep breath, then let my gaze sweep across the viewing platform.

Ares stood in the front row of the VIP section, his crimson cloak cascading behind him like a waterfall of blood. His hand rested on the war sword at his waist—a trophy taken from the Titan beast, symbol of his unmatched glory. When our eyes met, he gave me a nod.

The gesture was brief, restrained, but to me it felt like a promise.

You can do this, his gaze seemed to say. I'm waiting for you to prove yourself.

My heart skipped a beat at that look. I imagined what would happen after the test, when golden ichor flowed from my fingertips—how he would descend from the platform, how he would take my hand before all the gods and announce our betrothal.

I imagined becoming his wife—the war god's consort, standing beside him to receive the cheers of all Olympus.

I placed my hand in the Basin. Held my breath. Waited for the golden light that would prove I belonged.

My fingertips bled red.

Not the molten gold of ichor. Not even the pale shimmer of lesser divinity. Just red. Human red. Mortal red.

The Basin screamed.

I don't know how else to describe it. The sound that came from that ancient bone was like metal tearing, like the universe itself rejecting something obscene. It drove gods to their knees, hands clamped over their ears.

And I stood there, frozen, watching red drops fall into pure white stone.

"Mortal." Someone in the crowd said it first, voice sharp with disgust. Then others picked it up, a rising chorus of revulsion. "The Dawn Estate raised a mortal. They've been parading a fake for twenty years."

I didn't understand. I didn't understand why this was happening.

For twenty years, Dawn's power had flowed through my veins—I could feel it, warm and bright, like the first rays of sunrise. Though it had never truly awakened, it had always been there.

Until today.

Until the moment I placed my hand in the Basin, I felt that divine power... vanish. Like an oil lamp burning through its last drop, extinguishing without a sound.

All that remained was red. Mortal red.

That's when she appeared. Aurora.

She looked so small. So fragile. Divine servants supported her as she climbed toward the altar, her golden hair tangled, her eyes red from crying. She'd been found in the mortal realm just weeks before—pulled from poverty, they said, finally returned to her rightful place.

When she placed her hand in the Basin, it sang.

Pure light erupted from her fingertips. Ichor so bright it turned the clouds to flame. The Basin resonated with joy, welcoming true Dawn blood home at last.

Lady Selene—my mother, no, Aurora's mother—ran to her, sobbing. "My daughter. My real daughter. You're finally home."

I looked at Orion. At the brother who'd spent twenty years calling me his precious little sister. Who'd taught me to fight and laugh and dream.

He stared at me like I was something that had crawled out of a sewer.

Then I looked at Ares.

He still stood in place, his hand still on his war sword. But his expression had changed.

That gentle expectation was gone. In its place was a cold, almost disgusted indifference. He looked at me the way one looks at defeated soldiers on a battlefield—worthless trash not worth wasting time on.

His gaze lingered on my face for less than a second before sliding away, as if looking any longer would waste his precious attention.

I saw him unconsciously take a step back, widening the distance between us, as if I carried some contagious disease.

In that moment I understood. He'd never loved me. He loved the identity of "the Dawn Estate's pure-blooded divine daughter." He loved a perfect match who could complement his war achievements, who could make him look better before the gods.

"Get her out of here," Father Helios ordered, not even looking at me. "Lock her in the dungeons until we decide what to do with this... situation."

The dungeons beneath the Dawn Estate were called the Sunless Cells. I'd never been down there before. Why would I have been? I was the beloved daughter, the cherished sister. I had rooms filled with sunlight and gardens where I could run.

The cells were the opposite of everything I'd known. No light. No warmth. Just darkness and cold stone and the distant sound of water dripping.

They stripped me before they locked me in. Not for any practical reason—just to make it clear that I had no right to divine fabric anymore. The ceremonial gown, the silk undergarments, even the jeweled pins in my hair. All of it was torn away.

"Mortal skin doesn't deserve to touch godly cloth," the guard sneered, throwing a rough grey shift at me. It smelled like whoever had died in it last.

I put it on with shaking hands. The fabric was coarse, scratching against skin that had only ever known silk.

Then they brought my first meal.

For twenty years, I'd eaten ambrosia. The food of gods—sweet and perfect, sustaining in ways mortal food could never be. Now they shoved a wooden bowl through the bars. Inside was moldy bread and something that might have been meat once, now rotting and covered in flies.

"That's what mortals eat," the guard said. "Better get used to it, thief."

Thief. That's what I was now. A thief who'd stolen twenty years of divine food, divine shelter, divine love that should have gone to Aurora.

I tried to eat the bread. I had to. But the first bite made me retch, and the guards laughed.

The worst part wasn't the physical conditions. It was the servants.

The low-level divine servants and minor spirits who'd spent years bowing to me, seething with jealousy because I'd been born lucky and they hadn't. Now they crowded outside my cell, finally free to say what they'd always thought.

"Fake."

"Liar."

"Mortal trash pretending to be a goddess."

I curled up in the corner, trying not to think about Orion's face when he'd looked at me. Trying not to wonder if Aurora was sleeping in my room now, wearing my jewelry, sitting in my place at the family table.

Just like that. I spent three months in that cell. Until judgment came.

One Night. One Mistake. One Lifetime of Consequences.

I thought I was waiting for love. Instead, I got fucked by a beast.

My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.

But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.

In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.

"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.

"Who the fuck is Jason?"

My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.

I ran away for my life!

But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!

They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.

Brad’s cold gaze pins me: “You carry my blood. You’re mine.”

There is no other choice for me but to chose this cage. My body also betrays me, craving the beast who ruined me.
