They Cropped Me Out of the Family Photo
Zara Thorne · Completed · 8.1k Words
Introduction
For eighteen years, I was the quiet, easy daughter. My sister Brooke got my clothes, my room, and the center of every picture. Ethan, the boy next door who once watched me nearly die from a peanut allergy, handed me a peanut butter smoothie and called it my favorite.
When Brooke found my full-ride acceptance letter, she called it fake, tore it in half, and threw it in a dumpster with my passport. My family laughed.
So I climbed in, dug it out, and got on a plane.
Three months later, the whole town learned I was a national scholar. So did my family.
Now they want me back.
Too late.
Chapter 1
Harper's POV
In my family, graduation photos are a big deal.
Mom booked the photographer two months out—the same guy who shoots Christmas cards for half of Brookhaven. The pictures would go on the graduation announcements mailed to every relative we have, and come December, they'd go on the Christmas card too.
The morning of the shoot, there were two garment bags hanging in the front hall.
One held Brooke's custom white dress.
The other held Mason's new suit.
I checked both bags. Then I checked them again, just to make sure I hadn't missed something.
"Mom? What am I wearing?"
She was kneeling on the rug, fastening the pearl buttons down the back of Brooke's dress one at a time. She didn't even glance my way.
"What about your Thanksgiving sweater? The beige one. It photographs well."
"It's pilling."
"That's what Photoshop is for, sweetie." She did up the last button and sat back on her heels to admire Brooke. "These are going to your grandmother's side of the family. Brooke's leaving for college in the fall. She needs to look the part."
I was leaving for college in the fall, too. Nobody had ever asked me where.
Mason came down the stairs, fiddling with a cufflink, and looked at me like I was a dog that had knocked over the trash again.
"Jesus, Harper, you're eighteen. Can you go one day one day without making everything a competition with Brooke?"
The side door from the backyard swung open and Ethan walked in.
He's lived next door since we were in pre-K. He was carrying a little gift bag. Inside was a crystal hair clip. For Brooke.
He took in my sweater, smiled, and said it as casually as if he were talking about the weather.
"You look fine. It's not like today's about you anyway."
Brooke skipped over and hooked her arm through mine, all soft voice and big eyes.
"Harper, do you want to borrow my white dress from last year? The collar's kind of yellow, but if you stand in the back, no one'll notice."
Her new dress was blinding in the June sun.
All those little pearl buttons, catching the light. They made my eyes hurt.
And suddenly I got it.
They hadn't forgotten.
They knew exactly how important these photos were. They remembered to book the photographer two months early. They remembered Brooke's size. They remembered which collar Mason liked.
It just never occurred to them that I might be worth that kind of effort, too.
It wasn't the first time. My dresses were the ones Brooke had outgrown. My backpack was the one she got bored of. Every birthday, she picked the cake flavor first.
We're ten months apart, in the same grade. The neighbors like to joke that we're "practically twins."
Funny thing, though. Nobody has ever said we look alike.
Lately, I'd caught Brooke standing at the mantel more than once, staring at the old black-and-white photo of Dad's brother, Uncle Daniel, like it was a puzzle she couldn't solve.
I always figured that if I was good enough—quiet enough, easy enough, never any trouble—my turn would come eventually.
The photographer waved me in. "Two daughters graduating the same year? That's special! Get in the middle!"
Brooke grabbed Mason's sleeve. "Can I be in the middle? Please?" She said it lightly, but her knuckles were white.
Mason frowned and nudged me aside with his elbow.
"Put Harper on the end. Brooke's blond—she pops more in the middle."
After the shoot, I went to the downstairs bathroom. Through the door, I heard Mom talking to the photographer.
"This is the one. Brooke's smile is perfect. Too bad Harper blinked."
"Oh, it's fine. We'll just crop the edge. She's on the end anyway."
I stood at the sink with the water running.
There had never been a spot for me in that picture. Not from the start.
After that day, I stopped trying to squeeze myself into the frame.
———
"Harper? Earth to Harper."
Ethan snaps his fingers in front of my face.
"Come on. We're helping Brooke pick the menu for her party tomorrow."
That was two weeks ago. This is now.
Brooke just got her official acceptance to the state university. She got in off the waitlist, but you'd think she'd won a Nobel Prize, the way my family is celebrating.
Dad has booked the private room at the most expensive steakhouse in town.
I follow them inside, and my phone buzzes twice in my pocket.
The first text is from Ms. Patel, our school's college counselor.
HARPER!!! You're a MERIDIAN NATIONAL SCHOLAR!!! 100 students in the whole country. Full ride, four years, it's OFFICIAL!!!
This is a woman who doesn't use exclamation points in emails.
The second is an email. Dr. Chen, director of the summer research program at the Carlisle Institute of Technology, wants to know if I'm free for a call tonight.
I lock my screen and slide the phone back into my pocket.
The manager comes over personally to hand out menus. Mom takes one and, without even opening it, slides it across to Brooke.
"Tonight's your night, honey. You're the star tomorrow."
Mason ruffles Brooke's hair. "So what do you want for a college present? I already ordered the laptop. Newest model."
"Mason, you're the best." Brooke bats her lashes. "But honestly? What I really want is that necklace Ethan posted on Instagram yesterday."
Next to me, Ethan goes still.
I know that necklace.
A month ago, he showed me the design. A custom Tiffany pendant with a single letter engraved on the back: H.
He said it was for my eighteenth birthday. And for graduation.
I turn to look at him.
He doesn't look at me.
He reaches into his jacket, pulls out the little blue box everyone in America would recognize, and sets it in front of Brooke.
"It was always for you."

Love's Deadly Equation
I was sent to her.
To watch her. To protect her. And, when the order comes… to kill her.
My name is Keegan Caffery. I’m the Carter Mafia’s best hitman. I don’t miss. I don’t fail.
At least, I didn’t use to.
I don’t know what it is about her that got to me first—her mouth, her mind, or the way she looks at me like I’m not what she should fear.
I’ve had a gun to her head since I walked into her life.
She knows it.
And she still doesn’t run.
She just watches me back like she’s studying a problem she refuses to call impossible.
She’s the one variable I can’t control.
And God help me… I don’t want to.
I have an order. I have loyalty. I have a trigger.
But every time I imagine it—
I can’t stand it.
Her or me. That’s the math.
It’s a deadly equation I don’t want to solve.
⬥ Maisie ⬥
I’m not ordinary. I stopped pretending long ago.
My name is Maisie Seo. IQ 145. Clinical genius.
Which sounds impressive until you realize what it actually means: I don’t fit anywhere people expect me to.
I see patterns everywhere. Outcomes before they happen. People like equations I’ve already solved.
It gets lonely in a world you’ve already figured out.
So I dull myself down. Smoke the edges off. Pretend, badly, to be the kind of normal that lets people stay.
Then he walked in.
I knew what he was immediately. Dangerous. Intentional. Wrong in all the right ways.
I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
Instead, I’m fascinated.
Because for the first time in my life… I’ve found something I can’t solve.
He is my deadly equation.

MOONLIT CHASE
But no, I had to walk through the park at midnight like an idiot. Now I've seen something I can't unsee—a massive black wolf tearing apart three men, then shifting into the hottest guy I've ever laid eyes on.
Kieran Vaughn. Wealthy lawyer, werewolf, and apparently, he thinks I'm his mate.
Here's the problem: I don't do relationships. I definitely don't do supernatural things. I absolutely don't do rich guys who think they can control my life just because their inner wolf has decided I smell like home.
When hunters start targeting me to get to him, Kieran drags me into his pristine penthouse for "protection." Now I'm living with a man who looks at me like I'm his last meal, whose touch sets my skin on fire, and who's barely holding onto his control.
He says everyone he loves dies. I say that's not my problem except it is because I'm falling for this broken, dangerous man and his beast.
And in his world? Love will get you killed.
