Chapter 1

When we moved to the estate on the hill, all the bedrooms had already been assigned.

My parents had the primary suite.

My brother, Adrian, had the east wing.

The south suite, with its view of the Hudson—the nicest room in the house—was marked Grace's Room.

There was no room with my name on it.

In the hall, a worker was fastening brass plaques to the bedroom doors.

Not one of them read Claire.

Ten years earlier, Grace's father had been my dad's underboss. He had gone into a burning warehouse to rescue Adrian from the Bellinis. He hadn't come out.

Standing over his coffin, Dad had declared that Grace would be his daughter from then on.

What the Don said was law in our family. Somehow, though, I was always the one expected to cover the cost of that promise.

I asked Mom where I would sleep.

“You're going off to grad school soon, aren't you?” she said, as if it were obvious. “What would you need a bedroom for?”

Then she turned back to the pink curtains she was choosing with Grace.

Adrian knelt on the floor, lifting different fabric swatches for them to see.

Nathan, my boyfriend of three years, was putting up Grace's paintings. He insisted on hanging each one himself; apparently the movers couldn't be trusted with them.

Sitting on a packing box, I finally got it.

Nobody had overlooked me by accident.

They thought Grace should have the room, the family, even the boyfriend I had believed was mine.

I brought up the agreement on my phone.

A federal research site in the Nevada desert. Classified work.

A five-year commitment, with no outside contact.

I added my signature.

Ten days from now, I would be out of their lives. And I wouldn't be coming back.

...

“Submitted” appeared on the screen.

I pushed my knuckles beneath my eyes to stop the tears before they fell.

A daughter in our family needed the Don's permission to leave. Going without it was about as close to betrayal as a woman could get. If his men learned what I was doing before I reached the federal compound, they would bring me straight back.

I had to keep this to myself.

Nathan emerged a few minutes later with his sleeves rolled above his elbows and sweat along his forehead. He took a water bottle from the coffee table and drank half of it without stopping.

“Hey. You've been working since lunch,” I said. “Come sit with me a little?”

He wiped his mouth with his wrist, still looking toward Grace's room instead of at me.

“Not done. Two of the frames are about half an inch off. She'll notice.”

He left the bottle and went past me without a glance.

In three years, had he ever taken that kind of care with something of mine? I couldn't think of a time.

When I moved into my freshman dorm, I had five boxes stuffed full and a sixth-floor room. The elevator was out of order. Nathan had promised to get there at ten.

His text came at nine. Something came up with the family. Sorry, baby. I'll make it up to you.

I carried all five boxes upstairs on my own.

That evening, Grace uploaded photos from an amusement park. Nathan appeared in nearly every picture.

Around midnight, he called to ask about the move.

“No problems,” I said.

That was what I always told him. Whatever he did, I spent three years assuring him there was no problem.

Mom leaned out of the kitchen. “Claire, why are you just sitting around? Go sort Grace's paints. The housekeepers never get the colors right.”

I looked along the hall.

My boxes were piled at the turn, pushed against the wall and still in everyone's way.

The movers had followed the plaques on the doors. Everyone else's belongings had a place to go.

There was no door for mine. They had stopped where the names stopped and left my things there.

I kept my voice level. “Mom. Which room am I using?”

She glanced at the boxes as though she'd only just seen them, then gestured toward the small door at the end of the laundry hall.

“Use the storage room until you go.”

“You want me in the storage room?”

“Don't give me that look.” She pressed her lips together. “You've managed before. Nobody's putting you in the garage.”

She was right about one thing. It wasn't the first time.

Grace had come to us in the fall.

We didn't talk about it, but we all knew how Adrian had been taken. Mom had slipped him out without his guards, wanting one ordinary afternoon with her son. Two nights later, while Dad was still trying to negotiate his release, she had called Thomas, sobbing, and begged him to bring her boy home.

He had gone.

Mom had never forgiven herself for either decision.

Grace arrived thin and quiet, wearing a black funeral dress much too large for her. Mom sat with her on the couch for hours, holding her and crying.

“This is your home,” she whispered again and again. “I won't ever let anyone here make you feel unwanted.”

Later that night, she came to my bedroom.

“Honey, Grace really needs a room of her own. You don't mind sleeping somewhere else for a little while, do you?”

I was twelve. I told her I didn't mind.

That little while lasted a year.

Whenever I asked about getting my room back, Mom acted as though I had attacked a child who had just lost her father. Eventually I quit asking.

Now, ten years later, I was being sent away from another bedroom.

I took the pillow and blanket from the top of my last box and headed down the corridor.

Only ten days.

Ten more days in a house that had never made a place for me. Then I could go.
